Passive

A style of play characterized by checking and calling. Passive players are usually risk-averse.

One-Chip Rule

The one-chip rule says that if a player puts in a chip of a larger denomination in response to a previous bet, it is to be considered a call unless that player declared an intention to raise.

Move-in

To move-in means for a player to put all his chips at risk.

Live Bet

A live bet is a bet posted by a player in which he has the option to check, call, or raise when the action come around to him. This is often seen when players post their blinds or a "live" straddle.

Juice

Juice refers to any money collected by the house. There are other types of juice besides rake.

Irregularity

An irregularity is an abnormal condition in which, many times, a floor would have to be called to correct. For instance, a card falling on the floor is an irregularity. The hand is considered dead and is done over.

Irregular Declaration

An irregular declaration is a gesture that has no meaning in and of itself, but is a standard gesture for an action in poker games. For example, Humberto Brenes would point his thumb upward when wanting to raise.

Improve

To improve is to make a better hand by drawing to or adding cards to your hand. This is seen in draw poker, stud poker, and community card poker variants. This is synonymous with "catch up."

Hanger

A hanger is when the bottom card of the deck sticks out further than the rest of the cards. This is usually a tell that the dealer is dealing from the bottom of the deck (a form of cheating).

Half-Bet Rule

The half-bet rule says that if a player puts an amount of chip greater than or equal to one-and-a-half the original amount needed to call, the player is committed to raise.

Fouled Hand

A fouled hand is considered invalid due to some technicality (invalid deck, cards on floor, etc.). This is synonymous with dead hand.

Forced-Move

At a cardroom, a forced-move table works in conjunction with the cardroom’s feeder tables. Forced-move tables are always full with players from feeders always filling empty spots.

First Position

First position is the playing position directly to the left of the big blind. This position is synonymous with "under-the-gun."

Feeder

At a cardroom, a feeder is a table that works in conjunction with the cardroom’s "main" table. Feeders are basically "waiting" tables and player must leave feeders as seats at the main table open.

A dirty stack is a stack that is meant to be of a single denomination with one or two other denominations in the stack. This is usually done by mistake but some players do it deceptively.

Dealer’s Choice

Dealer’s choice is a way to play poker. It is usually found in home games. In dealer’s choice, the deal goes from left to right with each new dealer choosing or inventing a variant of poker to play.

Deal

1) To deal is to distribute the cards to all players at the table. 2) A deal refers to an agreement of how to ration the prize money; this is usually seen on the final tables of tournaments.

Dead Blind

A dead blind is a blind that directly enters the pot. This blind does not play as part of that players bet. Dead blinds are usually posted if/when players re-enter a table after missing their small and/or big blinds.

Cut Card

A cut card is found at the bottom of the deck (in live play) to prevent being able to see this card. Without a cut card, players that happen to see this card would have an unfair advantage.

Countdown

Countdown is the act of counting the cards in the deck after all cards have been dealt. This is to ensure the game is being played with a 52-card deck.

Combination Game

A combination game is a game where many games are played in rotation. HORSE is an example of a combination game.

Color Up

To change smaller denomination chips for higher denomination chips. This term is used in live cash games and players cash up to make it easier to walk around with their chips.

Coffee House

To coffee house is to say a statement in order to deceive your opponents from the true nature of your hand. For example, a player may say, "I’m being priced in," when calling and trapping with aces.

Chip Up

To chip up means to exchange lower denomination chips for higher denomination chips, usually in tournament play. All low denomination chips are to be taken off the table when chipping up.

Open Fold

An open fold is a fold even though there is no bet to call. This is synonymous with check out.

Check Out

To check out is to fold even though there is no bet to call. This is synonymous with open folding.

Catch Perfect

To catch perfect is to catch the ONLY two cards in the deck that could have helped you beat your opponent. Therefore, a player must catch his last two outs on the turn and river.

Catch Up

To catch up is to improve your hand and complete a better hand than your opponent. It is necessary to have a worse hand, draw to a better hand, and complete this draw to successfully catch up.

Catch

Catching cards refers to cards coming out that completes a players draw. For instance, cards of a certain suit may cause a player to catch his flush.

Orphan Pot

An orphan pot is one where players seem to have little interested in the hand or winning the pot. It is often won by the first person to bet into it.

Buy The Pot

Buying the pot refers to betting into an orphan pot to try and win it. Please refer to orphaned pot for definition.

Bully

A bully is a player who uses his large chip stack to push others off their hands. This is usually seen in tournament play where players do not want to risk all their chips (and tournament life) on marginal hands.

Both Ways

Both ways is used to refer to both halves of a high/low pot. When a player wins both ways, he wins both halves.

Blaze

Blaze is a hand that is added to many home games. It is not a standard poker hand. Blaze consists of five face cards and beats a flush.

Big Full

Big full refers to the nut full house in a game played with community cards.

Back Into

1) When a player backs into a pot, he wins a pot with a hand that would have folded to any action. 2) When a player backs into a draw, he completes a backdoor draw.

Back In

When a player backs in, he enters a pot for free by checking and then calling the first bet by his opponent. This is usually seen in five-card draw.

Ante Off

In tournament play, if a player is absent, his chips are said to be anted off. Even though the player is not seated, his blinds and antes are still being deducted from his chip stack.

Action

Action refers to a player’s turn in the hand. For instance, once the cutoff folds, action is to the button.

Gap Hand

A gap hand is a hand consisting of two cards separated by at least one rank.

Forward Motion

A rule in some casino that rules reaching for chips and pushing them towards the pot constitutes a bet.

Dark

To bet/check in the dark means to bet/check without information of the flop, turn, or river. This is done before the card comes out.

Busted

Busted can refer to a player losing all of his/her chips or to a draw that did not complete.

Bleed

To bleed chips is to lose chips through bad, usually obviously bad, decisions.

Advertising

To show a specific hand and have others believe you play a certain way.

Peel

A card that comes out on the turn or river is said to "peel."

Action Card

An action card is a card that encourages betting from two or more players.
