Definition
A mandatory bet paid equally by all players before the hand is dealt.
Example
In tournament play, ante\'s are usually introduced in later stages of play. For example the blinds are 200-400 and a 25ante. The small blind and the big blind need to pay 200 and 400 plus the 25 ante, which needs to be paid by all players. In this example on a 9 handed table the pot will be 1025 before the preflop betting begins.
