Definition
One of the seats directly to the left of the big blind. A player in early position acts before other players pre-flop and just after the blinds post-flop. Many poker strategy books suggest that players in early position only play a tight range of hands because they have little information about the holdings of the other players.
Example
In a 10-max game, Hero is sitting one seat to the left of the big blind. He is in early position.
