Every year, online gaming website eGaming Review releases their Power 50 – a list celebrating the most powerful players in the online gaming business. This year’s record has just been unveiled and topping the tree for the second consecutive year is the Austrian based betting company bwin.
Bwin has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years, catapulting them to the height of their industry. They began as a sportsbetting firm, but since have diversified into all manners of online gambling sectors. Their efforts in online poker have not been insignificant. In 2006 they purchased the OnGame network, former home of PokerRoom.com. They integrated OnGame with their own burgeoning player base to create what is now the 5th largest poker network in the world.
Former giants PartyGaming have been of the path to recovery of late, but even they could not topple bwin. Credit for Party’s 2nd place finish is largely given to their recent deal with the US government which absolves them of any previous illegality. Innovative betting website BetFair.com finished in third place, moving up from the 5th spot they occupied in 2008. BetFair produced a 30% rise in earnings in the first half of this year and continue to establish themselves as one of the industry’s hottest properties.
Bwin, on the other hand, has recorded a 40% increase in earnings in the first half of 2009 and look to be going from strength to strength. Their most recent effort has been to acquired Italian gambling company Gioco Digitale. Gioco has taken advantage of the recent broken Italian gaming monopoly to establish themselves as the biggest provider of online gaming in the country. Bwin also continues to raise their profile by sponsoring major sports leagues and teams. The Spanish Primera and Segunda soccer divisions both bear the bwin name, as do the world renowned team Real Madrid – with whom they recently extended their deal until 2013.
