Just one week removed from an absolute beat down at the hands of Viktor Blom, Daniel Negreanu was back at it with a renewed spirit, 30″ monitor, and a few tricks up his sleeve.  Last Sunday the two poker heavyweights took to the felt in a $50/$100 heads-up battle which saw Negreanu lose $150,000 in less than 1,500 hands! There was some uncertainty over whether or not the two might play again this weekend, but after some tweets from Negreanu earlier the match was assuredly on. Starting at 3 PM EST the two players sat down to compete for $150,000 over 2,500 hands on four tables.

The match could not have started out any better for Blom. He quickly seized all the momentum and looked to finish off Daniel early. After his Pocket Queens held up against Pocket Tens pre-flop and his Aces coolered Negreanu’s Kings, Blom was up nearly $120,000 in 1,000 hands! With just $30,000 left Negreanu started his comeback. A slew of big hands ensued and he was quickly just down $60,000.  Suddenly “KidPoker” had stolen the momentum and with more than 1,000 hands left looked to be in firm control of the match.  Blom’s lead bounced back and forth from as little as $7,000 all the way up to $50,000.  However, Negreanu’s confidence never wavered as he ultimately took the lead 2,000 hands in and was able to maintain his lead down the stretch where Blom was forced to start stacking off quite lightly in order to catch up.  His Ace-Four was no match for Daniel’s Ace-Queen and his Pocket Fours could not crack Pocket Aces. Blom lost more than $20,000 in the last handful of pots ultimately falling by more than $35,000 to Negreanu.

It was just the second loss in the challenge for the player widely considered the best multi-tabling heads-up competitor in the world. His aggressive style mixed with great instincts has led to epic battles with the likes of Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, and Patrik Antonius in the past. While he no longer players on FullTilt due to his recent affiliation with PokerStars he created history there with Antonius when the two played a pot worth more than $1,300,000 two years ago at $500/$1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha.  He has been playing a lot on PokerStars lately and currently ranks in the top-5 in VIP Player Points earned this year due to competing in a large amount of $5,000 heads-up SNGs.
