Event 17 in the FTOPS 7 was the biggest and perhaps most anticipated event for the series. It is definitely the most unique to the series and no other online site has ever ran anything like it before. Why? Well, not only is the buy-in huge for the online world at $2620, but it is also a 2 day event. The event started on Saturday, February 16th at 2:00 PM with a 30 minutes blind structure and 5,000 starting chips; the deepest stacked tournament in the entire FTOPS. Day 1 would play down to level 17 or the final two tables, whichever came first, and then resume the next day at 2:00 PM.
Since online tournaments run much faster than live tournaments it is very rare to see a 2 day event, but Full Tilt is always running innovative ideas and it seems that many people like the tournament. The prize pool was $1.5 million guaranteed, but actually rose to over $2.1 million with 849 entrants! Just finishing in the money was worth $3820, while winning the whole event would award someone with $488,000! This event was hosted by Scott Fischman, a young professional player who made his skill known in the 2004 World Series of Poker. He won back to back bracelets, the youngest ever to do so (at age 24). He now has over $2.1 million in career earnings.
You could expect which such a large buyin and deep structure that this was going to be the toughest event on the schedule. In total, 35 Full Tilt pros registered for this event, and 5 ended up cashing; Scott Clements in 58th for $5,094, JJ Liu in 40th for $6,367, Gavin Smith in 31st for $7,216, Eric Froehlich in 12th for $20,163, and Ram Vaswani found himself at the final table. Also, the final table had some other tough pros, including John Newcombe, RandomDonk (known also as SomethingGood), and Fishof Thedai.
Unfortunately for the Full Tilt Pro, Ram Vaswani didn’t have much to work with and found himself the first casualty, 9th place for $36k. With everyone being so deep stacked, there was definitely room to make moves and plays, and no one did that better in this event than csimmsux. He eventually achieved victory in arguably one of the toughest online tournaments, topping ABU-BILAL heads up. Congrats to him, he is nearly a half million dollars richer!
