FTOPS VII Event #2 featured the first Pot Limit Omaha tournament of the series. The $256 buy in event had a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. It also had an odd format called “knockout.” In the knockout format, for every player you bust out $40 is credited to your account, but everything else remains the same. The new format clearly attracted many takers, as the prize pool doubled its guarantee; 1,183 players entered for a total of $236,600 up for grabs.
Many professionals came out for this tournament, which was hosted by high stakes cash game player Ben Roberts. However, unlike in Event #1, where no Full Tilt sponsored pro broke the top 100, many placed very high. Scott Fischman received 12th place, and Aaron Bartley, Andy Bloch, and Steve Zolotow all were in the money. Yet, when all the dust cleared, we had a final table filled with hopeful amateurs up against seasoned Full Tilt pro Sigi Stockinger.
Urbestm8 had never played a tournament on Full Tilt before this one. In fact, KudelyKQ, SKILLET79, APINCHBETTER, and euro930 had played only a handful of tournaments before Event #2 . Fbonacci and handsy05 were much more experienced than the others, but only had marginal success at low stakes tournaments before taking a shot in this one. Of course, Full Tilt professional Sigi Stockinger had much more experience than all of them, and was likely the favorite going into the final table.
But Sigi faltered without a healthy chip stack to conquer the weaker table, and busted out in 5th place for a respectable $14,503. At this point it was anyone’s game, but in the end, Urbestm8 beat our KudelyKQ for first place, and a handy $52,052. When it came down to it, urbestm8 got some good hands at the right time, but was also able to take advantage of the table’s inexperience. It was a hand early on in the final table that propelled urbestm8 from on the edge to on his way to first place.
