Event 8 of the FTOPS VII was a unique twist on the game. It was $120 + $9 no-limit hold’em 6-max knockout. What this means is that $100 of everyone’s buyin goes to the prize pool, and everyone also has a $20 bounty on their head. Every person you happen to knock out, you pocket $20, with no max. So in theory, you could finish out of the money and still make money in this tournament. This definitely adds some other factors that normally would not apply to a normal tournament.
The event had called for a $150,000 guarantee, and to say that it was surpassed would be an understatement. In fact, the prize pool ended up being $600,000 which was FOUR times the guarantee! Also, $120,000 would be given out in bounty’s, making it $720,000 in total. 6000 people came out to play, which was the maximum that the tournament would allow. This would make first place worth $144k, and a seat at the final 6 was worth at least $18k. Obviously, they weren’t sure of how popular it would be but I’m sure they will realize this for the next series!
The NLHE Knockout was hosted by Peter “Pors” Jepsen who is the winner of an EPT event in Poland. Strangely, his poker career began after a bad knee injury. He was unable to do anything psychical, so decided to give poker a shot. I bet he is glad he did, since he has over $500,000 in career earnings. In addition to Jepsen, 32 Full Tilt Pros entered including Chip Jett, Huck Seed, Mike Matusow, and Scott Fischman just to name a few. However, only 2 of these red pros would finish in the money, Ben Roberts at 371st and Paul Sexton at 275th.
As play continued, I’m sure screams were yelled and tears shed, but the final 6 were eventually named; th_IN_kB4Urail, OnlyPlayRagz, Sleepy_Hippo, neil003, hurikane3, and checkdisouttt. Of these, checkdisouttt is known as kingwildcard on P5s with some decent scores under his belt, OnlyPlayRagz is a well known MTT pro. The rest aren’t really known in the online MTT world. However, that wouldn’t stop them from making a name for themselves.
The first casualty was hurikane3 who took 6th for $18k. Next to go would be th_IN_kB4Urail who has never been as upset for earning $26,400 in 5th place. Down to 4 way action, someone began to separate themselves from the others with a large boom. Sleepy_Hippo looked like he was on a mission, and that mission was a FTOPS jersey. OnlyPlayRagz would be the next one gone in 4th and the $36k that went with it. Checkdisouttt would fall one place short of heads up, in 3rd taking home $48k.
Down to heads up, anything can happen. With short stacks and large blinds, many say it comes down to luck most of the time. If that is the case, then Sleepy_Hippo was the lucky one, as he beat out 5999 other players and neil003 heads up to be declared the winner of the FTOPS VII Event 8! neil003 took second for $70k, and Sleepy_Hippo would be the only in 6 figures with $114k and all the bounties he earned through the tournament (I don’t know the number, but I’m willing to bet it was a lot!).
