The second event of FTOPS 8 was a $240+$16 Pot Limit Omaha Knockout event hosted by Max Pescatori. It was the first event of six involving Pot Limit Omaha in this series. Being a “Knockout” event meant, not only are the normal prizes awarded for finishing top in the field, but $40 are set aside from each buy-in and given to the person who knocks out each other respective player.
When the tournament began there were 1070 players which created a prize pool of $216000, breaking the guarantee by $16000. This tournament was interesting because not a single FullTilt sponsored professional cashed. The best finish was by Andrew Wiggens who placed 145th, 37 places outside the money.
When the field had cleared down to the final table, after a few hours of play, Gregguiche was the chip leader with 574961 chips. In second was whothedonk and third was hasuling. In fourth, fifth and sixth were The_Dean221, who has won over $400000 in FullTilt MTT’s including cashing in various FTOPS events, enyogo, and toksnokas, who cashed in the PLO 6-max event in FTOPS 7, respectively. And rounding out the final table was Double O KC, Pokerfan X, and Tilted-Tony.
There was little wait for excitement at the final table when on the first hand with blinds at 8000/16000 hasuling raised 44000 and pokerfan x moved all-in from the small blind for 141138 with KK1010 and hasuling called with A2 of hearts and 88. When the flop came 78J of hearts it was all over for pokerfan x who walked away with a little over $3000. Then, when the blinds had moved up to 10000/20000, gregguiche raised to 70000 UTG+1 only to be reraised to 220000 from enyogo in the big blind. Gregguiche thought for a second before moving all-in with KKJ10 with two clubs and was quickly called by enyogo with AAQ2 rainbow. A wicked flop of AQ10 came giving enyogo top set but gregguiche the nut straight. The turn and river failed to improve enyogo and he was all-out in eighth for $4815 leaving gregguiche the chip leader with over 1000000 chips. On the very next hand there was no small blind because of the elimination of enyogo and again gregguiche raised UTG, this time to 60000. Double O KC smooth-called from the button and the two went heads up to the flop. Gregguiche wasted no time firing a pot-sized bet at the 1055 flop which induced an all-in raise of only 45000 more from Double O KC which was quickly called. It was gregguiche’s KK versus Double O KC’s QQ. The turn and river gave Double O KC no help and he was out in 7th for $6420.
At this point Gregguiche’s chip lead was such that it was almost triple the second place hasuling. With the blinds at 12000/24000 gregguiche limped in the small blind to the short stack Tilted-Tony in the big blind. He put in a small raise trying to take down the pot without risking his tournament life but was pushed all-in by gregguiche. At that point the pot-committed Tilted-Tony was all in with JJQ8 rainbow to gregguiche’s 54 of spades and A9 of diamonds. The flop of 569 with two diamonds left gregguiche with two-pair and the nut flush draw. When the turn 3 of diamonds came gregguiche had eliminate three out of the first four players at the final table and had a massive chip lead.
Toksnokas was hanging on for dear life but couldn’t take it any farther when he was taken out in fifth for $13375 and then The_Dean221 made a flurry of weird decisions including a fold when he was getting 4 to 1 on an all-in and eventually was taken out when hasuling made a straight on the river.
The final three was set, gregguiche having a 4 to 1 chip lead on on both whothedonk and hasuling. In one of the first hands of the three-handed table gregguiche an very unorthodox play trying to eliminate hasuling and called an all-in with nothing more than a runner-runner straight draw. He ended up losing the hand and the chip lead to hasuling. Then whothedonk made an equalizing play when he hit a spade flush against hasuling after an all-in, leaving the three players all very close in chips. Hasuling then made some plays which left him with only 11000 chips and gregguiche and whothedonk a bit richer. When hasuling ended up in the big blind he was automatically all-in and lost his last chips to gregguiche taking home the bronze medal and $22577.
Heads-up play began with gregguiche having a huge chip lead on whothedonk. But a pivotal hand came with the blinds at 20000/40000. Greguiche made it 120000 to go which whothedonk tripled and gregguiche called. The flop 79K with two spades and whothedonk shoved all-in and gregguiche quickly called. Gregguiche showed top pair top kicker and a gut-shot and whothedonk had QQ and a spade-draw. The turn came a 10 of spades and gave whothedonk the flush but giving gregguiche two pair. But, the river was a 3 and left whothedonk with the chip lead.
With the blinds still at 20000/40000 whothedonk made it 120000 to go with a massive chip lead. He was called by gregguiche and the flop came J9K rainbow. Bets were made leaving gregguiche all-in with top-two pair and a straight draw and whothedonk with AA and a broadway draw. A queen hit on the river and whothedonk had made broadway and the river left nothing for gregguiche. Whothedonk had taken down the championship for $48150 and gregguiche walked away with $30495.
