As the month of January came to a close it was Gus Hansen and Patrik Antonius who emerged as the big winners so far this year. Hansen was at the top in Omaha with slightly more than $3.8 million in winnings, while Antonius sat at the top in Hold’em, winning over $1.75 million. To win this much over the month, these two players were involved in some of the biggest pots to take place on the tables.
Hansen played a hand worth over $350k during a rare eight-person $500/1000 Omaha game. LarsLuzak began the action in the hand, raising it to $3k. Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan called, but Hansen reraised to $13.5k from the button after the action folded around to him. LarsLuzak called after the blinds folded, but Dwan then popped it up to $55.5k. Hansen would raise it up again and have both players call for a three-way all in pot. Dwan turned over 5c Jh As Kh, while Hansen showed 8c 8d Qd Jc. However, LarsLuzak would be ahead with 3h Kd Ks 3s. The flop came Jd Tc Js though which gave both Hansen and Dwan three jacks, but Dwan’s ace kicker still had him in the lead. The 4d fell on the turn which wouldn’t make a better hand for anybody but would give Hansen a flush draw. The Td came on the river and made Hansen’s flush which would allow him to scoop the entire $357,056 from the pot.

The previous pot could not compare with the next one though, which totaled up over half a million dollars. Trex313 would open up the hand with a raise to $3k from early position. Patrik Antonius called. Tom Dwan then reraised to $13k. Acting right behind Dwan, Hansen then popped it up once again to $32k. This folded the action around to trex313 who called and after Antonius folded, Dwan pushed all in. Hansen then reraised again, pushing it up to over $190k, which trex313 would just call. The flop came 6s Th 6d and Hansen pushed the rest of his chips in. Trex313 would call and show 8d 5d Tc 7c for a pair of tens and a straight wrap. Hansen turned over Ac 4d 6c Ah for three sixes, while Dwan only had Kc Kd 9h 8c for a pair of kings and a gutshot straight draw. The turn brought the Jc which didn’t help anybody out, and the river brought another jack which once again left things as they were. Hansen’s three of a kind would be good enough to take the main pot and side pot which combined for $537,750 total.

The next big pot was worth less. Coming in at just over $300k, it involved much more post flop play than the previous hands. Hansen raised to $2k from under the gun and Dwan reraised directly behind him to $5,500. This would fold everybody else out of the hand and Hansen would call when it came around to him. The flop came 9d Ah Th and both players checked to see the Qd fall on the turn. Hansen checked to Dwan again who bet out $13.2k this time. Hansen called and the river came the 6s. Hansen again checked to Dwan who put out a $35,700 bet. This time however Hansen reraised, pushing it up to $131k which Dwan would call. Hansen showed Kc Jh 4s Qc for an ace high straight which couldn’t lose and Dwan mucked his hand leaving Hansen to pick up the $304,900 pot.

Antonius would play his fair share of huge pots on the Hold’em tables throughout the month as well. In one hand both Antonius and Dwan put their entire stacks in the middle preflop, resulting in a pot worth over $300k. When all the raising was done, Antonius turned over Jd Jh and would be racing against Dwan’s Kh Ah. The flop came 4s 9d Qc and Antonius would remain ahead. The turn brought the Td which gave Dwan some gutshot straight draw outs to go with his kings and aces. The 4h fell on the river which wouldn’t improve Dwan and Antonius would scoop up the $320,067 from the table.

The next big pot involving Antonius pushed up over $400k. Mafews opened the action with a raise to $3k from under the gun. The action folded around to Antonius who called from the big blind to see Td 9s 5d come on the flop. Antonius checked to Mafews who put out a $5k continuation bet. Antonius then reraised it to $21k, but Mafews popped it up to $48k. Antonius called and the turn brought the Jd, which prompted Antonius to push his nearly $164k stack into the pot. With Antonius, Dwan, and Hansen all sitting at the same table, there is sure to be some action, and the next hand was filled with it as the pot nearly reached half a million dollars. Dwan put in a raise from under the gun and Antonius reraised to $10k from the small blind. Hansen folded his hand and Dwan called to see Qh 4s 6s come on the flop. Antonius put out a $16k continuation bet which Dwan called. The turn came the Jh and Antonius put out a $42k bet. Dwan however reraised this time, pushing it up to $179k. Antonius then put the rest of his money in the middle and Dwan called slightly less than $44k to see a showdown. Dwan turned over Ad Qd for top pair top kicker. Antonius flipped over Ah Ac and had Dwan just about crushed. The river came the 5s which didn’t help Dwan out and Antonius took down the $498,871 pot.

The next hand topped all of the previous ones, as it pushed over the $550k mark. Antonius raised to $3.5k from under the gun. Dwan pushed it up to $11,500. This folded out Hansen, but Antonius called the $8k and the flop came Qh 5c Kc. Dwan put out a $17,200 continuation bet and Antonius called behind to see the 6s come on the turn. Dwan slowed down and checked the action to Antonius who bet out $39k. Dwan however turned the aggression way back up as he went for a checkraise, pushing it up to $156,500. Antonius smooth called and the river brought the 5h. Dwan then pushed all in and Antonius called the nearly $100k he had left in his stack off. Dwan showed 9c 8c for missed straight and flush draws, while Antonius turned over 7h Kh for kings and fives, which was good enough to take down the $562,720 pot.

Both players had the perfect combination of luck and skill this month and showed that they may just be the best there are in the games they play. With over $5,000,000 in winnings between the two in just a month, it would be hard to argue it any other way.
