After being in the business for 10 years, PokerRoom.com of OnGame fame will close its doors after Bwin.com decided to put it down.

PokerRoom.com is, or rather, was one of the most famous and longest-running online sites.

Yesterday, players on the PokerRoom.com site were greeted with the message of its shutdown, and were encouraged to play at its parent Bwin.com instead.

From the PokerRoom.com blog:

Well folks, after almost ten years of fun and games, it is with a heavy heart and a tear in my eye that I have to announce that this is it; as of 11:00 CET today, Tuesday the 14th of April 2009, PokerRoom.com will no longer be open for online poker.

The pending closure was announced a while ago, and players have been encouraged to transfer their account money to Bwin.com since March 12th.

PokerRoom.com was founded by Oskar Hörnell and Claes Lidell in 1999. It was, at its popularity peak, one of the most famous rooms online and is also the precursor (or granddaddy) of the fish-rich OnGame network, which offers its software in a multitude of languages. Tower Poker, Mansion Poker and of course Bwin itself are also prominent rooms on the network.

The OnGame network itself continues to operate as usual, unaffected by the cease of operations at PokerRoom.com. Game on, guys! In the immortal words (translated) of the French: The King is dead, long live the King!
