An interesting dynamic occurred this past weekend as online tournaments on PokerStars seemed to battle with one of their live events, the 2010 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure whose main event is still running.  While the Warm-Up and Million remained unaffected it seems the $500k and $215 re-buy took big hits in both number of entrants and total prize pool.  There was still plenty of big names on hand yesterday including a few FullTilt professionals who made deep runs in the Sunday Brawl.

The day started with the appropriately-named Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars. This tournament continues to flirt with the million dollar mark and yesterday was another close call. Overall more than 4,700 players entered the days second biggest event, creating a $940,200 prize pool. Third-place finisher “AJacejackAJ” took down the 7th five-figure score of his career, eclipsing a previous high of $27,000 for winning the $90k on FullTilt last year.  He ended up taking home the biggest piece of the pie due to his hold of a massive chiplead during a four-way chop.

Both “wriedthansen” and “Vyna” were two of the more inexperienced players at the final table, yet when the dust settled they found themselves heads-up competing for the final $10,000 remaining after the four-way chop.

The Sunday Million was also chopped yesterday. Once heads-up play began both “marktb” and “Isetit” guaranteed themselves over $200,000 with an additional $30,000 left on the table. Matt “shep2k” Shepsky, a former winner of the $1K Monday on FullTilt, took home 7th place for just under $35,000. Mike “chipchucker5” Ferrell finished one spot worse in 8th place. The $20,000 score was only the 5th biggest of his career, well behind multiple runner-up finishes in the $200k re-buy on FullTilt. For the first time in a while the Sunday $500k failed to reach 900 entrants. The $500k had been booming since the completion of the 2009 WCOOP; however, the past few weeks have seen a rapid drop-off in attendance. This can be completely attributed to the 2010 PCA as the majority of the players missing are more than likely in the Bahamas.

There were still plenty of good players at the final table yesterday. Two of the most recognizable names on PokerStars, “govshark2” and “comeonphish” were on hand but unable to win. Govshark2 is a top-10 ranked pro who won this very event in August for $100,470. ComeOnPhish is a bit of a tournament machine, with a large amount of $10k+ scores to his name.

“Blue Knight1” took home $36,250 for his 4th place finish. This was merely the fifth biggest score of his career, well behind a runner-up in the $500k as well as a win in the Second Chance last year. Eventual champion “antesvante” is another top-100 ranked professional who won the Sunday Million last April for $227,820. It seems even with a lot of internet professionals in the Bahamas the $500k was still able to produce the best final table of the day.

The $215r is another tournament which relies heavily on players with bigger bankrolls. While the tournament only costs as much as the Warm-Up or Million to enter, in order to compete players have to both re-buy and add-on numerous times in order to build a big chip stack. A few big names reached the $215r final table including “intervntion”, “1$ickDisea$E”, and winner “toweliestar”. 1$ickDisea$E is a top-10 ranked professional who has won $30,000 or more on six different occasions. His biggest score was a win in the $200k re-buy on FullTilt last year for just under $81,000. He nearly won the $215r last month, finishing 2nd for $32,160.

Benny “toweliestar” Spindler shipped yet another Sunday Major. Spindler made the final table of the 2009 PCA Main Event and was able to win the $25,000 SCOOP Heads-Up Championship for $360,000. It seems this $32,954 score is his biggest cash since that major win.

The Second Chance took a small hit yesterday but nothing like the $215r or $500k. While the tournament failed to reach the quarter-million prize pool mark it was still able to surpass its $200,000 guarantee. Runner-up “KJulius10” found his way to the 2nd major final table of his career, having finished 6th in the Sunday $500k last year. His opponent, “petit ponche”, had also final tabled a few majors in his career including an 8th place finish in the Million in 2008. In the end petit ponche was able to outlast KJulius10 for the victory and more than $43,000.

FullTilt continues to run their big 3, the Brawl, $750k, and Mulligan. Overall these tournaments are wildly successful even though they typically take a backseat to the bigger PokerStars events. Either way FullTilt offers something no other site does, the ability to play against their professionals on a consistent basis. The Sunday Brawl was a great example of that yesterday as FullTilt sponsored professional “Jon Turner” made the final table before busting in 4th place.

There were 20 other FullTilt “red pros” on hand for the days first event including Lee Watkinson, Ram Vaswani, and Erica Schoenberg. Ronald Grauer managed to earn the biggest cash of his career even though he fell heads-up against “dogspot”. The $71,736 cash surpassed a $59,962 win in the $200k re-buy on FullTilt last June.

Just like the Million on PokerStars the FullTilt Sunday $750k came to an abrupt end once heads-up play started. Both “imahustla1” and “WanderingQueen” agreed upon a chip chop once “MikeSix” was eliminated in third place. Neither player had a big score to their name which more than likely affected their decision to lock-up a six-figure score. Unfortunately none of the 25 FullTilt professionals playing in the even managed to make the final 100. In fact, only one professional, Steve Zolotow, managed to cash in the site’s biggest event.

The Sunday Mulligan finished off what proved to be a solid day of tournaments on both FullTilt and PokerStars. The day’s latest starting event managed to attract over 1,100 players who battled it out for the $47,001 first-place check. One of the bigger names in online poker, “gator93”, managed to take home third place and over $23,000. While most would be ecstatic over such a score, Gator93 is used to much bigger cashes. The $23,653 he earned yesterday barely cracked his top-10 and pales in comparison to two six-figure scores on PokerStars last year. Taking home the title and $47,001 was “kmksmkn”, a solid tournament grinder who until yesterday did not have a five-figure score to his name.
