October was not only a sour month for the economy, it was also a down month in terms of online MTTs. Tournaments had trouble meeting their guarantees as attendance as a whole was dropping severely.  Hopefully the month of November offers a large turnaround in this department.  Things already looked better today as both the Stars 500 and the Sunday Million ($1.5M Guaranteed) both attracted enough players to not have to pay out any overlay.  That is certainly a welcome sight for the poker rooms, and it means even bigger prize pools for the high-stakes MTT Pros.

Starting the day off was the $750,000 Guarantee PokerStars Sunday Warm-up.  In October this tournament had a tough time meeting the guarantee.  Today was much different, as 4004 entrants generated a prize pool of $800,800.  Here were the stacks entering the final table:

Seat 1: 124poker (4,337,442 in chips)
Seat 2: sumoen (3,907,302 in chips)
Seat 3: GIGI LUCA (1,842,163 in chips)
Seat 4: BodogAri (4,398,541 in chips)
Seat 5: Barbarossa_7 (5,211,900 in chips)
Seat 6: TJGROW8 (4,734,132 in chips)
Seat 7: Climax100 (852,082 in chips)
Seat 8: hyggebuks26 (3,083,994 in chips)
Seat 9: DeuceBuster (11,672,444 in chips)

As you can see DeuceBuster had the chip lead by quite a wide margin,  holding more than 25% of the chips in play.  He would eventually make it to an incredible heads-up battle, one which would last for nearly an hour.  There would be no chip-chop deal as DeuceBuster and “124poker” would battle back and forth until 124poker, who entered the final table 4th in chips, would take the win:

Seat 1: 124poker (28282504 in chips)

Quite the disastrous flop for DeuceBuster as his AJ was outrun by A3s.  Don’t feel too bad however, as he takes home over $72,000 for his efforts.  124Poker ships the first place check worth $104,104.  This 2nd place finish was DeuceBuster’s 7th career 5-figure score, and by far and away his largest, eclipsing a $30k cash in the FTOPs Main Event. There weren’t too many recognizable names making deep runs, which tends to happen from time to time in these huge MTT fields.

The Sunday Million finally met its $1,500,000 Guarantee this week, with 7836 entrants generating a prize pool  of $1,567,200.  There were some ridiculous beats, including perhaps one of the sickest hands I’ve seen at the Final Table in some while, and it didn’t even result in a bust out!

Going into the final table this is how the stacks looked:

Seat 1: Papatri (3194605 in chips)
Seat 2: tickkid (7329013 in chips)
Seat 3: Stammdogg (16612397 in chips)
Seat 4: jiacstrap (4851587 in chips)
Seat 5: METZMAGNY (10493716 in chips)
Seat 6: dray313 (6682748 in chips)
Seat 7: h2oace (11066996 in chips)
Seat 8: ldgii (2841516 in chips)
Seat 9: aaaaaaaa (15287422 in chips)

One of the first hands at the final table was a crazy pot.   Every once in a while players will get all their money in holding the same hand, but not generally the same pair!  On top of that, the odds of either pair winning the pot is 4% (2% each).  Unfortunately for “aaaaaaaa” that’s precisely what happened:

Seat 1: Papatri (2964605 in chips)
Seat 2: tickkid (2077426 in chips)

A sick pot would cripple aaaaaaaa and leave jiacstrap with a workable stack.  However, aaaaaaaa was not the first to go, that honor was reserved for “tickkid” who earned $10,970 after this hand:

Jiacstrap: $122,068
METZMAGNY: $117,822
h2oace: $105,771
ldgii: $104,481

There was $30,000 left in play for the eventual champion.

First to bust was jiacstrap, who, after the chop took home $122,068, which is over $50,000 more than what fourth normally pays.   Here is his bust out hand:

The Stars $109r is usually a difficult, yet, rewarding tournament to win.  The $150,000 Guarantee was easily eclipsed after 440 players generated 1024 re-buys and 322 of them added on at the break.  Overall this would create a $178,600 prize pool, with nearly $35,000 going to first.  Taking that honor, was David “Bakes” Baker, who plays as “WhooooKidd” on PokerStars.  He has made our STR numerous times and is considered on of the best online tournament players around.  He won the Sunday 500 just three weeks ago for over $90,000 and this is his 6th lifetime score over $30,000.

The final hand was quite a crazy one, with Bakes flopping an OESD and mediocre flush draw against the nut-flush draw of daminacho2.  The turn would bring a perfect card for Bakes, the 4c, and he would hold up on the river to win the tournament.

The latest starting tournament on PokerStars is the Sunday Second Chance, a $200+$15 buy-in,  $250,000 guaranteed tournament.  If this looks a bit off, that’s because Stars cut $50,000 out of the guarantee in what used to be a  $215 buy-in $300k tournament.  The tournament had been consistently underachieving player pool-wise, and with the drop it actually met its guarantee today.  1330 participants generated a $266,000 prize pool and a 1st place check of just over $48,000.  The last two standing were “lanfear23” and “PiZZa911” would eventually agree to an even chip chop for $41,708.80 each.  If the name lanfear23 sounds familiar it is because he won the Second Chance LAST WEEK.  Yes, back to back victories in the same Sunday major is quite an impressive feat.  He earns about $11,000 less than last week due to the chop and drop in the guarantee, but still, a nice way to end October and start November.  Third place finisher, and PokerStars Pro Hevad “RaiNKhAN” Khan, final tabled the 2007WSOP Main Event. High-stakes MTT Pro “Tmay420” also made the final table, but busted early, in 7th.

FullTilt’s Three Majors are the Sunday Brawl, a $256 KO event, and two $216 events, the $750k and Mulligan.  The great thing about FullTilt is a lot of their pros play, therefore everyone has a chance to play with some famous and very talented poker pros.  The first event is always the Brawl, a tournament in which players get paid for knocking other out!  In this event, each time someone knocks another competitor out they receive $40 on top of any money they might win in the event. This week, 1975 players generated a prize pool of $395,000, easily beating the $350k guarantee. A lot of FullTilt Red Pros played in the event, including WSOP Player of the year Allen Cunningham, multiple-bracelet winner Scott Fischman, and online phenom PearlJammer.  Only one pro would make the money, that honor goes to Michael Craig who busted in 81st.  Finishing in second was “LuckyLukeKK”.  He has had one other large cash in his career, a win in PokerRoom’s Euro Grand Prix for over $22,000.  This week he takes home nearly $54,000 for finishing in the runner-up spot.  Taking the crown and over $81,000 was “bellbop,” a player who does not have much of an online record to his/her name.  Either way it’s a nice score and congratulations goes to all who monied.

Next up in the rotation is the Sunday $750k, by far and away FullTilt’s biggest tournament of the week.  While it has the spotlight this week, in the next few weeks FTOPs returns, which will bring huge tournaments and even bigger guarantees!  This week a lot of Pros were on hand for the $750k; 31 to be exact.  522 players would eventually make the money, four of which were Red Pros. Once again S. Gromenkova would prove her worth, making a deep run, eventually busting in 30th for $2250.  Overall there were 3637 players who entered the event, forcing FullTilt to pay out $22,600 in overlay.  Once play got down to heads-up, “Kenretaard” and “sistabossen” would look to chop.

The final tournament on Full Tilt is the appropriately named Sunday Mulligan.  This $200+$16 buy-in $200k guaranteed event gives everyone a final shot at making a nice score on Sunday.  This week 1044 players entered, generating a $208,800 prize pool.  A lucky 13 FullTilt Pros played in the event, with a few making some nice runs.  Adam Schoenfeld and S. Gromenkova both made it to the final 30, finishing 29th and 25th respectively.  Online legends Jordan Morgan and “TheWacoKidd” both played but were unable to cash.  Eventual champion “0madison7” is no stranger to success on FullTilt, having narrowly missed winning an FTOPs event before, finishing 5th for over $17,000.  This time he was able to seal the deal, taking home the crown and $46,980 after he and “Young Buckka” both flopped top pair:

As always, the Bodog $100k Guaranteed finishes off our list.  The tournament saw a nice increase in its player pool this week, attracting 750 players willing enough to pony up $100+$9.  While this is about a 100 player improvement, it still left Bodog with $25,000 in overlay.  Taking home the crown was “rathbboatn” who was able to outlast “ChoibaSiglo” for the win and a nice payday of $23,600.
