Sunday tournaments continued to push onwards towards the end of 2011. It has been quite a rocky year for online poker. With April 15th’s removal of American players from the market, a lot of sites have lost a good chunk of their MTT traffic. On top of this, online poker giant FullTilt had to close its doors completely amongst crazy allegations heading all the way to the top of their organization. And yet, online poker has persevered. For those in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia, the game has never been more popular. Sites like Party Poker, Bwin, and the iPoker Network have all picked up the slack left by FullTilt. Their Sunday tournaments have grown in size, and while they may not individually compare to those on FTP, collectively they are a nice replacement.
This past weekend saw big attendance in a lot of online events. Tournaments such as the $250k on Bwin, $200k on Party, and Million on PokerStars all had nice showings. Attendance should only go up around the holidays as sites run more promotions. PokerStars, for one, should see a big boost from their 10-year anniversary as they plan on running a world-record tournament that hopes to garner 200,000 entrants! The $1 buy-in will take place next weekend and carries $50,000 in automatic overlay. The previous record of 150,000 entrants, also set by PokerStars, should be easily beat.
