As 2009 comes to a close it seems online tournaments are on the rise.  After successful WCOOP and FTOPS events, both PokerStars and FullTilt seem to be having no problems filling up their major weekend tournaments.  At one point earlier this year every event seemed to be struggling to reach their guarantees.  However, the past few months have seen a bit of a resurgence, with every event surpassing their guarantees on a consistent basis.

This Sunday was kicked-off, as always, by the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars. The $750,000 guaranteed event has been on fire lately, having surpassed the $900,000 prize pool mark for over a month now.  Once again more than 4,500 players were on hand yesterday, creating a massive $905,200 prize pool, the second biggest of the day.  Unlike most of the other events, this tournament was not chopped as “cotrim333” took home the title and over $142,000.  While he hasn’t had a ton of success in major events, he did win the $109r on Stars last year for more than $22,000.

Typically the Sunday $500k or the $215r have the biggest names make their final tables.  However, this week the Sunday Million saw two big names in poker make deep runs.  PokerStars professional Hevad “RaiNKhAN” Khan, well known for his deep (and boisterous) run in the 2007 WSOP, finished in 8th place.  Khan was one of the first players to popularize multi-tabling SNGs on PokerStars.  In a moment now found on youtube, Khan was forced to submit video of himself playing 20+ tables to confirm he was not a robot.  Just years later he found himself at the final table of the 2007 WSOP Main Event, ultimately finishing in 6th place for $956,243.  Joining Khan was another player who has tasted major live tournament success.  Mark “newhizzle” Newhouse, winniner of the WPT Borgate Open in 2006 for $1,519,020, added another major title to his name.  Newhouse outlasted a big field in the Million to take down the title and over $245,000 in first-place money.

The $500k on PokerStars took a small hit yesterday, as only 1,003 players entered one of the weekend’s more prestigious events. A few strong names were on hand at the final table including “KidPokerJD” who took down the Second Chance last year for $49,901. Coming into this final table he had over 20 $10,000+ scores to his name on PokerStars alone. Joining him was “PokerSavage1” who is becoming a bit of a regular on this report. This is the 2nd time he’s made a deep run in the $500k, finsihing in 3rd place in July for $48,000. He nearly won the $215r two weeks ago, taking 2nd place a $27,090. Second place finisher “Gwermort” has tasted final table success in the past, finishing in 5th in the Brawl on Fulltilt for more than $25,000 last month.

Plenty of big names in online poker found their way to the $215r final table yesterday. Jon “PearlJammer” Turner, a FullTilt sponsored professional finished in 3rd place for just under $20,000. 7th place finisher “Stevie444” won this very event in September for $45,920. Eventual winner “slammedfire” took down the 2nd biggest cash of his career. Earlier this year he nearly final-tabled the WCOOP Main Event, bubbling the final table in 10th place for $75,040. While he has a good amount of tournament success, he is also well known for being a mid-stakes cash game grinder, where he has played more than a million lifetime hands on PokerStars alone.

Wrapping up another strong day of tournaments on PokerStars was the Second Chance. This tournament has been around forever, and continues to grow each and every week. Yesterday there were nearly enough players to create a $250,000 prize pool. Runner-up “GHSE00011364” added another five-figure score to his resume which include more than 10 cashes on PokerStars alone. The $32,933 cash was the biggest of his career, besting a win in the $11 Sunday $200k, also known as the Sunday Lottery. In that field he outlasted more than 29,000 competitors. Eventual winner “jamesms11” recorded the biggest score of his career, easily besting a win in the $33r for $12,000 in May.

The Sunday Brawl started things off on FullTilt yesterday, as 2,601 players created a $520,200 prize pool. Ever since the guarantee was bumped up to $400,000, the Brawl has had no troubles surpassing the half-million mark. Twenty-five of FullTilt’s finest professionals were on hand, including Vitaly Lunkin, Allen Cunningham, and Erica Schoenberg. In fact, one of FullTilt’s “red pros” made the final table. Eunjong Byun is one of the newest FullTilt professionals and a former StarCraft pro gamer. This was actually the 2nd time he’s made the final table of the Brawl in the past 4 months, as he took 5th place for just under $25,000 in September. Joining Byun was another strong professional in top-25 ranked Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek who took the best part of a 4-way deal, earning $82,408. This was the 6th $50,000+ cash of his career, joining a win in the Second Chance on PokerStars as his other major win.

The $750k has been relegated to the 3rd biggest tournament lately. Finding itself now behind both the Million and Warm-Up on Stars, the $750k has been consistently in the $750,000 to $800,000 prize pool zone. This week was no different as 3,787 players created a $757,400 prize pool, well behind the $900k+ from the Warm-Up. If FullTilt were to look at areas to improve attendance, they might want to start in their own house. Only 25 FullTilt Professionals played the $750k yesterday, one of the lowest turnouts in recent memory. Even the pros that registered didn’t seem ready to play, as none made it inside the top 100.

Just like the Brawl the $750k came down to a chip-chop. This time only two players, “pat4ak2” and “tablepiece” decided to split the remaining prize pool. This was the biggest score of both players career and their first major Sunday success.

Finishing a big day of online events was the Sunday Mulligan on FullTilt. Mike “Timex” McDonald, a FullTilt sponsored professional, made a deep run before busting in 19th place. Stuart Paterson, another red pro, also found himself fighting for the final table until he went out in 15th place. Michael “worldsgrtest” Banducci found his way to the final table, taking home $9,801 for his 6th place finish. That score was merely the 8th biggest of his career, well behind a $48,000 cash for a 5th place finish in the SCOOP $800k in April. He has had some Sunday success in the past, taking 3rd in the $500k for $47,500 just two weeks ago. Mulligan winner “sh4rrK” nearly won the $750k in June, finishing in 3rd place for $54,250.
