Online tournaments continue to steamroll into 2011 as tournament attendance and prize pools keep growing each and every week. This past Sunday a few events, including the Warm-Up on Stars and the $1,000,000 Guaranteed on FullTilt saw a nice boost in entrants.  Other events held steady and will look to build on the momentum of WCOOP and FTOPS events as we head into a brand new year of online major championships.

The Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars got the day off on the right foot as more than 4,700 players entered the $215 buy-in event creating a $946,400 prize pool.  With more than $148,000 up for grabs for the winner, the final table competitors were in no mood to gamble as one of the biggest chops of the year took place with the final five players divvying up the remaining prize pool based on chip counts.  With nearly $430,000 left in the pot, it took a while to figure out the numbers but in the end “Dsavo” walked away with $117,040 and another $10,000 after winning. Fifth place finisher James ” j_ts80″ Broom actually earned the second largest check for $109,260.  One of the more recognizable names at the final table, Broom also finished highly in the Million just last month where he took 3rd place for $128625.  Second, third, and fourth place finishers “TeToF”, “Paris Dedes”, and “book_park” took home $68,539, $58,439, and $67,223 respectively. Chris “LUHMAN” Martin finished in 7th place for $21,294 which is just another big score on a resume that includes wins in the $200k and $109r as well as a 2nd place finish in WCOOP Event #9 back in 2007 for $130,957.

The Sunday Million failed to fall into the same trap as the Warm-Up. There would be no chop here as a strong final table played down to the bitter end as “bigoots” took down Joe “nineallday00” Stanski for the title and a huge $249,663 payday.  The near quarter-million score was by far and away the biggest of bigoots’ career as he tends to play midstakes freeze outs and re-buys. Stanski is also a mid-to-high stakes grinder who also recorded a life changing score of $182,449 for his runner-up finish. Gerald “viking47” Ringe was the most decorated of the final table participants having nearly won a HORSE major on FullTilt and PokerStars last year for $52,022 and $38,000 respectively. Below are the final table starting stacks, bust-out hands, and pay-outs:

The Sunday500 keeps on inching forward as nearly 1,100 players entered the $530 high-stakes freeze out yesterday creating a $546,500 prize pool.  This tournament tends to be a good barometer of overall tournament attendance health, as when it crushes its guarantee all online events tend to be up. With nearly $93,000 on the line for the winner a great final table battled it out for over an hour.  After the dust settled it was “Tomif gsd” who was left standing with all the chips and a $92,905 payday.  Tomif gsd was able to outlast Bill “throwinphins” Christie heads-up for nearly a $25,000 difference in pay outs.  Christie, who has now finished 2nd twice in this event, has more than a dozen five-figure scores to his name.  Fourth place finisher Jordan “jymaster11” Young is the 2nd rated online MTT player in the world according to another service and has made millions playing online events over the years. The $92,905 score for first place was the biggest cash of Tomif gsd’s career easily besting a $37,450 win in the $85k on FullTilt.

The Sunday $215 re-buy had some huge names at the final table including one FlopTurnRiver member.  Johan “busto_soon” Van Til came oh so close to winning before falling in 5th place for $10,372.  The uber high-stakes professional can be seen battling it out in online tournaments as well as $25/$50 and higher NL cash games. He won the Sunday Brawl last year and has many other major final table appearances to his name.  Grayson “graybone” Nichols finished two spots better in 3rd place earning $19,865 for his efforts.  The high-stakes professional is coming off a big year which saw him win the MiniFTOPS Main Event back in September for a $152,086 payday.  While Nichols and Van Til are big names in the online poker community they pale in comparison to this week’s $215 re-buy champion, Adam “roothlus” Levy. Levy is well known both online and live where he earned his stripes playing against Phil Hellmuth in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event. Levy certainly got the better part of Hellmuth in a series of hands which later aired on ESPN. While he earned $36,039 for his win this week I’d imagine it’s tough to have a more satisfying moment than owning the “Poker Brat” in front of millions of viewers.

The final table of the Sunday Second Chance had a few familiar faces who spent very little time competing for the $52,323 first-place check. Both George “jorj95” Lind and Grayson “gray31” Ramage made it to the final table but were the first two to bust earning just $4,051 and $6,511 respectively.  Lind is a highly-respected online grinder who tends to earn more Frequent Player Points each and every year than any other player on PokerStars. In fact, Lind has doubled up the required 1,000,000 VPPs in the past few years and finished 2nd to WizardofAhs this year in total VPPs earned.  His biggest score online came in a 7 Card Stud major earlier this year where he finished 2nd for $44,400 in the $2,100 buy-in event.  Ramage is also no stranger to online success on our Sunday Tournament Report having finished 3rd and 4th in the Sunday500 over the past 18 months. His biggest cash came in the WCOOP Main Event earlier this year where he finished in 8th place for $183,225.

Heads-up came down to “jandrin2” and “pokerking123” who went after each other for a $15,000 difference between first and second place.  Each player was guaranteed a career best score just by making it down to two-handed play. In the end it was jandrin2 who took home the Second Chance title after his pocket eights held up against his opponent’s 8T suited.

FullTilt had a big day Sunday as MiniFTOPS XVIII culminated with the Main Event which was covered in our News Section. For up to date information on tournaments, the online poker scene, and other major events in the poker world be sure to subscribe to the FTR News feed. Carrying on, the three Sunday Majors at FullTilt saw a nice boost in attendance due to the attention from the MiniFTOPS Main Event. The $750k took full advantage and bolstered both its guarantee and prize pool taking it to a $600+$40 buy-in, $1,000,000 guaranteed event. Before the $1M Guarantee could get underway the $400,000 guaranteed Sunday Brawl first had to start. This week 2,621 of the best players in the world entered the $256 Knock-Out event which pays out $40 to a player every time he/she eliminated a fellow competitor.

Amongst the 2,600+ in attendance were 30 FullTilt sponsored professionals including former World Champions Huck Seed and Carlos Mortensen as well as  player of the year Allen Cunningham.  Cunningham actually made quite a nice run finding himself at the final two tables before busting in 16th place for just under $2,000.  Fellow FullTilt red pro Ram Vaswani also made the top-100 but busted in 54th place.  The title and over $106,000 eventually went to “Tight-Man1” who is a relatively new player to online tournaments. In fact, after some research this appears to be the first four-figure+ score of his career.

FullTilt Sunday Brawl $400k Guaranteed

The $750,000 guaranteed was turned into the $1,000,0000 guarantee as FullTilt raised the buy-in from $216 to $640. While this helps to increase the prize pool it tends to cut the number of entrants in half. As such a big buy-in event it ousts of most player’s bankrolls.  This was made obvious as just under 2,100 players entered the high-stakes event which is a far cry from the 4,000 plus which typically enter the $216 version.  The larger buy-in did attract more FullTilt professionals as 45 entered, including Andrew Feldman, Cyndy Violette, and David “the Dragon” Pham.  As one might expect the $640 buy-in event led to a solid final table including eventual winner “dlanger610” who earned $230,957 for his efforts.  The high-stakes professional had also won the $40k Guarantee on FullTilt in the past as well as the $215 Super-Turbo on PokerStars just last month for $20,359.

Finishing off another big day of online events was the $200,000 guaranteed Sunday Mulligan on FullTilt. The cleverly named tournament gives all grinders one final shot at a big Sunday score. This weekend the prize pool grew to over a quarter-million dollars as 1,264 players ponied up the $216 entry fee.  More than 20 FullTilt professionals entered the Mulligan including Mihai Manole who finished in 13th place.  Fourth place went to highly ranked “MLH90” who took home $20,540 for a hard day’s work. The former Sunday500 winner has also won the $109r on PokerStars and the $200k Double Deuce on FullTilt in the past two years.  Coming in one spot better was “mostlynutz” who shipped another $25k+ score on a resume that already included a $119,430 cash for finishing 3rd in the Sunday Million last year.  For once the title actually went to the best player at the final table.  Taylor “taypaur” Paur is perhaps one of the 10 best online tournament players in the world having won both an FTOPS Event earlier this year for $192,228 and the UBOC $300k Guaranteed for $125,195.  He has also won the Sunday500, $1k Monday, $200k re-buy, $150k Guaranteed, $109r, and $100k on AP through out his illustrious online career. The $55,616 he earned for winning the Mulligan yesterday just barely cracked his top-10 scores which is a feat in itself.
