Another big day of online tournaments is in the books.  This Sunday, tournaments continued their recent trend of full participation with all tournaments reaching their guarantees.  It seems even in times of economic trouble that poker is able to withstand and even increase attendance in these big buy-in tournaments.

Getting the day going was the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars.  This week over 4,300 players created a prize pool in excess of $860,000, with over $111,000 going to first place and eventual champion “icallseat3.”  Icallseat3 is a solid tournament grinder, having 12 five-figure scores to his name before this huge cash on PokerStars. With previous victories in the $109r on Stars and the $65k Guaranteed on FullTilt, he is slowly but surely becoming one of the best online tournament players around.  Heads-Up play came down to icallseat3 and “bechis,” a player with a much weaker track record.  It didn’t take long for the better player to take control and take down the title:

The Million continues to break its guarantee and for once we saw a final table without a chop.  Unfortunately for 2nd place finisher “TheCronic420,”  arguably the best player at the final table, the decision not to chop cost him some money.  About 30 hands before the final hand, TheCronic420 had his opponent “Iceman1278” all-in holding AQ vs. A5.  Unfortunately a 5 came, giving Iceman the chip lead.  Below are all 8 knock-out hands and the payouts:

The Sunday Second Chance is the latest starting tournament each Sunday.  However, the tournament tends to end before the $215r and the Sunday $500k.  This week, a well-known player, “frtk,” found his way to the top of the leaderboard.  This win was his 2nd major victory of March after a win in the Warm-Up two weeks ago.  On top of these two victories he also has a win in the Sunday 500 last November.  Overall, ftrk is now up over $260,000 on PokerStars alone.  The final hand and payouts can be found below:

As always, the Sunday $215r table does not disappoint.  This week a big name in online poker, “Jovial Gent,” found his way to the top, taking home over $45,000 for his victory. For most this might be their biggest score, but for Jovial Gent it is only his 5th biggest cash on PokerStars alone.  The score is also dwarfed by a $250,202 cash three years ago in a $530 Sunday Million.  Other big names at the final table included “xthesteinx,” “drunkPPlaya,” and “YanniYankiev.”

The final event this Sunday was the PokerStars Sunday 500.  The tournament has struggled at times to reach its guarantee, but recently it has been able to reach the necessary 1,000 entrants.  The $530 buy-in tends to weed out a lot of mediocre players, leaving only the best online players to battle it out for a $90,000+ first place check.  This week the battle came down to “highland” and “BUCKIZ6.”  Neither player has had a huge amount of success at high-stakes tournaments, but both are winning players.  Highland eventually took home the title and over $94,000 when he flopped two-pair against top pair:

FullTilt upped the buy-in of their biggest weekly tournament to $500+$35 this week, turning the $750k guarantee into a $1,000,000 guarantee.  2,355 players created a prize pool of $1,777,500.   37 FullTilt sponsored professionals entered the event including Richard “CHUFTY” Ashby, two time WSOP bracelet winner Scott Fischman, and Ivy-league educated high-stakes professional Brandon Adams.  Unfortunately, none of the professionals made a deep run, leaving a relatively unknown final table.   In the end, it was “grimmy101” taking on “Charlie Jean” for the first place check of over $216,000. Grimmy101 was fortunate enough to take home the title, easily eclipsing his previous high score of only $5,994.

The Sunday Brawl is always an aggressive event.  The nature of the knock-out event, paying $40 to a player each time he/she busts another, creates a different dynamic than normally seen.  The tournament continues to climb near a $450,000 prize pool, perhaps enticing FullTilt to up the guarantee in the near future.   “NovaSky,” a well-known tournament grinder, made it all the way to heads-up play before falling to “oregongown.”  NovaSky won the $1k Monday on FullTilt only five days ago.  The relatively unknown Oregongrown easily eclipsed his previous best score of only $4,200.
