With FTOPS XVI starting over the weekend there was a lot of buzz centering around online poker tournaments. In the past, online tournament series such as FTOPS and WCOOP have proven to be quite beneficial for the overall health of Sunday majors as the additional players that show up for these events typically enjoy playing more than just 1-2 tournaments at a time.  There is usually a big boost in attendance the final week of the series that continues on after FTOPS/WCOOP are over. Hopefully the same will happen this year as FTOPS and SCOOP actually overlap in the beginning of May which might lead to some record-breaking events.

The Sunday Warm-Up broke the $900k barrier yesterday right on the number. 4,500 players entered the earliest event of the day which typically holds the #2 spot each week. With FTOPS XVI underway the Warm-Up took more of a back seat than usual, but still remained as just one of a handful of events with a six-figure first prize.  Speaking of FTOPS, a player with past success in the tournament series, “cdbr3799”, was at the final table of the Sunday Warm-Up yesterday. Just two months ago cdbr3799 won FTOPS XV Event #7 for $131,649. This was the biggest pay-day of his career and trumped a win in the $109r on PokerStars last August for more than $85,000. His seventh place finish here netted him $20,250. Heads-up play came down to “Timvd19” and “z o o t s”, with Timvd19 coming out on top for a nice $141,192 first place check.  He had quite the eventful Sunday winning both this tournament and the $109 $45k for $34,591 as well.  Runner-up “z o o t s” took down the biggest score of his career, easily besting a $41,067 cash on FullTilt last month.

The Sunday Million was in for a challenge as some bigger FTOPS events threatened to take over the #1 Sunday spot for a change. Over 8,770 players and more than $1,775,000 in the prize pool helped to make sure that did not happen.  This might have gone down as one of the fastest Sunday Million final tables in a long time, as there was no chop and the last few  eliminations happened so quickly it left all watching in shock.  With more than a quarter-million up for grabs for the winner, there were a lot of players looking to make the biggest score of their career late last night.

Taking home the $258k for the victory was “147_star” who had yet to have a five-figure score on PokerStars before last night. These types of wins just goes to show anything is possible in online tournaments and it takes commitment and perseverance to hit that one big cash.  “Benjamin89” came in second place for more than $188,000. He was another player without a big score on his resume that will be partying hard tonight! Below are the final table stacks, bust-out hands, and pay-outs:

The Sunday $500k final table had quite a festive atmosphere yesterday as all the players involved were quite talkative and seemed to be enjoying their moment in the sun. Heads-up play between “Antonio7” and “bigpimpin777” was even more friendly as after a short battle the two decided to chop the remaining prize pool with bigpimpin777 taking home exactly $80,000.  Jason “JP OSU” Potter finished in 5th place for more than $25,000. He has performed well in majors in the past having won the Second Chance in 2007 as well as the $109r on a few occasions.  He is nearing the $1,000,000 in earnings mark on PokerStars and should be there by the end of 2010. Geoff “GeoffRas22” Rasmussen was the first to go at the final table finishing in 9th place for $5,649. This score was well down the list on a resume that includes a win in the Wednesday Quarter Million for $50,444 and a near miss in FTOPS Event #9 last year where he took 3rd for $27,136.

The $215 rebuy once again had a solid final table full of professionals who enjoy the week’s biggest rebuy and add-on event. Ronald “jus2awsum” Lee, a top-75 ranked pro, finished in 2nd place for $26,130.  Lee grinds tournaments like no other and has a large amount of five-figure scores including multiple final tables in this very event. Beto “mestre_urubu” Caju took down Lee for the title this week and $35,711 in first-place money.  Just like Lee he has done quite well for himself online having also final tabled the Sunday Mulligan on FullTilt this year finishing in 4th place for over $20k.

Top-100 ranked “GripDsNutz” makes our report again this week after finishing 2nd in the Second Chance in March for $40,326. He has also shipped the $200k rebuy on FullTilt as well as the $109r on PokerStars more than once.  Fourth-place finisher “DareYou2Call” nearly won FTOPS Event #1 in February before busting in 3rd place for $95,982.  Another familiar face, Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek, ranked in top-10 in the world this year and has made the STR numerous times over the past couple months. He has a few major wins this year including the $109r, Mulligan, and Second Chance all with in the past 12 months.

Finishing off a solid day of online tournaments on PokerStars was the appropriately-named Sunday Second Chance. The $200,000 guaranteed major once again surpassed the $300,000 prize pool mark. With the Spring Championship of Online Poker just around the corner, this tournament should grow even bigger as players look for an extra tournament to fill their screens late in the day. Keep an eye on this major as the guarantee could skyrocket during the series.

Top-50 ranked Nick “agriffrod” Mitchell made the final table before falling in 6th place for just under $13,000.  The young superstar nearly won the Sunday Million last November as he took 2nd place for more than $173k. He has shipped the $109r on PokerStars numerous times and has more than a handful of $20,000+ scores to his name.  8th-place finisher “reelhugefish” not only has an awesome name, but has the game to back it up as well. He made the STR a few weeks ago for his deep run in the Sunday Million in March which ultimately finished in a 3rd place finish for $145,771.

FlopTurnRiver is covering FTOPS XVI in its entirety. All of the bigger events will have full write-ups in our News Section which can be found at the top of the screen. The only typical major running yesterday was the Sunday Mulligan which saw 1,333 players create a $266,600 prize pool. The final table was chopped between the top 3 players including “zelik”, “rjinnj”, and “DiXChapoLa”.

There were sixteen FullTilt sponsored professionals in the Mulligan yesterday, including Vivek Rajkumar who made the final table but busted early in 8th place for $5,599. Other well known pros making an appearance were Stuart Paterson, Jon Turner, and Jeff Madsen. Ryan “ryanghall” Hall is a highly-regarded SNG and MTT professional who won FTOPS Event #4 in 2008 ($300-$300-$300) for $159,735. Overall he has more than $1,100,000 in scores between FullTilt and PokerStars including a win yesterday in the $55r on Stars for $41,724. Taking home the biggest cash was zelik who post-chop earned $45,072. This score only trails a $71,000 cash in FTOPS Event #6 last year for his runner-up finish in a PLO tournament.
