The end of April brings a few special twists to the Sunday Tournament Report, most notably the PokerStars monthly Turbo Takedown.  The $1,000,000 guarantee event can only be bought into with 5000 Frequent Player Points (FPPs) which players earn playing in real-money cash games, SNG’s, and Multi-Table Tournaments.  The Takedown has a different pay out structure, with 10% going to 1st place and paying nearly half the field.  The tournament is more of a reward for those loyal to PokerStars throughout the month.

The first tournament of the day was the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up.  The $200+$15 Event has been easily beating its guarantee of $750,000 this year and it was more of the same yesterday.  4,077 players created a prize pool of over $815,000.   The final table was with out any huge names however there were many solid tournament grinders on hand.  Second place finisher, “GripDsNutz” has had tremendous success in online tournaments, with nine five-figure scores to his name prior to this tournament including a win in the $200k guarantee on FullTilt last month for over $76,000.  Reaching heads-up play he was guaranteed to eclipse that score as he took on relatively unknown “confused28” for first place.  As we saw last week, tournament experience does not always translate into victory as the inexperienced confused28 was able to outlast GripDsNutz and take home the title and over $128,000.

The Sunday Million ($1.5M Guaranteed) rebounded from a poor showing last week.  While the tournament was unable to reach its guarantee last Sunday, it found just enough participants this week to do so.   The tournament saw a chop occur three-handed between “antesvante,” “strip23,” and “maxpudim.” At the same time antesvante was making that deal he was also reaching the final table in the Sunday Mulligan on PokerStars.  While he busted early in the Mulligan he most likely didn’t care as he was busy taking home over $210,000 for his victory in the million.  This was by far and away his best score as it was only his second 5-figure score of his career. Below are the final table stacks, bust-out hands, and chop-adjusted pay-outs.

The Sunday500 saw a big name reach heads-up play in Christian “charder30” Harder.  Harder, fresh off a 4th place finish in the $25,000 Five-Star Classic Main Event for over $571,000, took little time in reaching heads-up of the toughest field of the weekend. Meeting him there was Randall “TwinMSU” Brooks, a high-stakes tournament grinder whose best score before Sunday was a win in the Nightly $100k on PokerStars for just over $30,000.  In the end it was TwinMSU taking home the title and over $87,000 while Charder had to settle for 2nd and $63,500.

A familiar face made it to heads-up play in the Sunday $215r in the form of Jeff “yellowsub86” Williams.  Williams is a well-known high-stakes tournament and cash-game player who made a deep run in last year’s WSOP Event#5 taking second for over $406,000.  Williams has nearly $700,00 in cashes on PokerStars alone including multiple wins in the $109r and three 2nd-place finishes in the $215r, including yesterday.  Handing Williams that third runner-up finish was “beaverFE\/ER”, another high-stakes professional who took down the Sunday 500 last October for nearly $93,000.  This was his first win in a major rebuy event and his second-best score of all-time.

The Sunday Second Chance has had consistent participation the entire year, easily beating its guarantee on a weekly basis.  This Sunday 1,305 players created a $261,000 prize pool.  This week the final table was a bit weak without many big names making deep runs.  Heads-up play came down to “JayGray77” and “zetagreg.” Neither player has had huge success on Stars but they were both winning players.  A final hand cooler allowed JayGray77 to secure the victory and take home over $47,000 for first place.

The Turbo Takedown rounded out the day’s events on PokerStars.  The Takedown runs once a month and is a $1,000,000 “freeroll” for players who have earned 5,000+ FPPs throughout the month.  The tournament is a great way for players to spend their FPPs as the tournament pays 4,000 spots which is almost nearly half the field.

FullTilt ran their three Sunday Majors, the Brawl, $750k, and Mulligan.  Once again the two smaller events were able to reach their guarantee while the $750k fell short for the second week in a row.   The first event of the day, the Sunday Brawl, is a $240+$16 “KO” Event which pays $40 to a player each time he/she eliminates a fellow competitor. This week 18 Full-Tilt sponsored professionals played including Isaac “Menlo” Baron, Scott Fischman, and TheWacoKidd.  Unfortunately none of the pros made a deep run leaving the final table devoid of any big names.  Taking home the title was “bonvivant21,” a player who before this win had never recorded a $1,000 score on FullTilt.  Needless to say this victory will go a long way in paying some bills.  Second-place finisher “fredde74” also was a total unknown, as this score was his only cash in the past few months on FullTilt.

The $750k was unable to reach its guarantee for the 2nd straight week; however, the smaller field did not lack talent.   Thirty Full-Tilt Red Pro’s entered the event including RamVaswani, Paul Sexton, and Stuart Paterson.  The final table was full of strong players including “titantom32” and “dajatt13” who made it to heads-up play.  Titantom32 is a top-ranked tournament pro who has twelve $20,000+ scores to his name including a win in the Sunday500 on PokerStars last August and the Super Tuesday last month.  That wealth of tournament experience did not come in handy as the lesser-known dajatt13 was able to outlast titantom32 for the victory and over $132,000.  This score was by far and away his best score, easily eclipsing a $22,725 score for a 4th place finish in the Sunday Second Chance on PokerStars last month.

The final event of the day, the Sunday Mulligan, saw “thechemist83” and “YAGOTANYGUM” battling heads-up for the $52,000+ first place prize.  Coming up just short in third place was Steve “MrSmokey1” Bilarakis, best known for winning a WSOP bracelet two years ago. Thechemist83 is no stranger to tournament success having five $20,000+ scores to his name coming into this final table.  For the first time this Sunday, the more well known player took down the title as a cooler propelled thechemist83 to the victory.
