This past weekend was not kind to online poker tournaments. Between being a national holiday, the WSOP starting in Las Vegas, and coming off the heels of SCOOP and FTOPS events the online poker world took a bit of a breather. Tournament attendance was way down across the board as only the Warm-Up on PokerStars reached its guarantee and FullTilt’s majors did not fare much better. There was a lot of overlay up for grabs for those who played yesterday and some took advantage with huge days and six-figure scores.

As mentioned the day did start on a strong note as the Warm-Up managed to get more than 4,000 entrants which easily bested its $750,000 guarantee and made it the 2nd biggest tournament of the day by a wide margin.  The final table had some strong online professionals including Jeremy “EndlessJ” Menard who finished in 8th place for just over $10,000.  This score was just one of many five-figure cashes on PokerStars for Menard who has more than $1,000,000 in earnings, including multiple wins in the $109r and more than a handful of $20,000+ wins. Taking home the biggest piece of the pie yesterday was Ryan “ryanghall” Hall who eeked out $700 out of a chop over eventual winner “Boruzze”.  The two both guaranteed themselves a $100k payday and took down the biggest scores of their careers on PokerStars.

The Sunday Million took quite a dip yesterday as only 7,214 players entered the weeks biggest event which fell way short of the necessary 7,500 entrants to reach its $1.5M Guarantee.  The lack of attendance cost PokerStars $57,200 in overlay which is a healthy sum to pay out to the field.  Just like the final table of the Warm-Up, the Sunday Million fell victim to the chip-chop bug as “danloulou” and “auruc1400” decided to chop up the remaining prize pool and leave just $30,000 on the table.  In the end it was danloulou who took down the title and more than $215,555 in prize money when his AJo was able to outlast aurucs1400’s A3s all-in before the flop. Below are the final table starting stacks, bust-out hands, and chop-adjust pay-outs:

Perhaps the tournament affected the most by the WSOP was the Sunday $500k on PokerStars. The $500+$30 buy-in event tends to attracts professional players only and with a few No-Limit events underway at the Rio in Las Vegas there was an obvious drop in attendance this weekend.  Just like the Million, PokerStars had to foot part of the bill as only 845 players entered creating more than $77,000 in overlay. That is quite a large amount of overlay for a tournament with just a $500,000 guarantee, but those are the breaks this time of the year. The final table had some solid players including Jamie “pokerjamers” Armstrong who has done quite well for himself on PokerStars with more than $1.2M in cashes including a $297,000 score for a 3rd place finish in last year’s SCOOP. He tends to play only the highest buy-in events and has nearly a dozen $20,000+ scores on his resume.  Michael “dapalma150” Palma is also no stranger to success in online poker having chopped the Million last December for more than $206,000.

While the $500k had a solid final table it could not hold a candle to the big names at the Sunday $215 re-buy which saw numerous high-stakes professionals make deep runs. Starting with 9th place finisher “aprilsfool” the final table was stacked with big names and great tournament resumes. Aprilsfool has more than $2,200,000 in cashes on PokerStars alone and is quite the tournament grinder having played more than 30,000 events! He has a large amount of five-figure scores highlighted by a runner-up finish in the Sunday Million last July.  Finishing just after aprilsfool was Tony “DrunkPPlaya” Gargano who has made multiple major final tables including a 3rd in the Million and Sunday $500k within the past few years. Just one spot better was STR mainstay Casey “bigdogpckt5s” Jarzabek who took 7th place and $6,000.  Jarzabek seems to pop up at a major final table every weekend and now has just about $3,000,000 in cashes between the world’s two biggest online poker sites including a win in FTOPS Event $9 in 2008 and #14 in 2009.

The next professional looking for a big score was ZackAttak13 who fell in 5th place earning $9,000.  This was just another solid score on a resume that includes wins in the $500k, Second Chance, and recently the Friday $150k for more than $29,000.  Coming in 3rd place was Joshua “pbdrunks” VanDuyn who took home $17,625 for a hard days work. VanDuyn has many big wins to his name including the Wednesday Quarter Million and a lot of close calls in this very event where he has finished in the top-3 four times without a victory. Finally, $215r winner Simon  “ScHnibL0r” Munz is a well known high-stakes cash game professional who dabbles in online tournaments from time to time.  Munz was able to outlast “aaajack” for the win and $32,250.

The latest starting donkament of the day on PokerStars was, as always, the Sunday Second Chance which recently upped its guarantee to $250,000. The tournament had been easily passing the $300k prize pool mark until yesterday where 1,249 players forced PokerStars to pony up a massive $200 in overlay! Yes, the Second Chance ended up just one person shy of fulfilling its guarantee, a great feat to say the least! Taking down the title and $45,625 in prize money was “Pghfan987” who recorded the biggest score of his career on PokerStars. The mid-stakes grinder had a bunch of five-figure cashes to his name before winning the Second Chance including a final table appearance at the Sunday500 last year where he took 7th place for $16,250. Runner-up “horyna” is another solid tournament grinder who has done quite well for himself in the $55r having won the event multiple times for $10k+ scores.

FullTilt’s tournaments also took a dip this weekend, but still performed well as the Brawl and Mulligan surpassed their individual guarantees. With the WSOP underway it would have been understandable to see a dip in the attendance of FullTilt sponsored professionals but 19 still woke up early enough to enter the $240+$16 Brawl. Unfortunately none of the pros, including Julian Gardner, Ram Vaswani, and Stuart Paterson, could make the top-234 and the money in the day’s earliest major. For those unfamiliar with the Brawl it is a Knock-Out style event that pays out $40 to a player every time he/she eliminated a fellow competitor.

Eventual winner “Sirocko” took home his second $90,000 score of the year on FullTilt having nearly won the $216r FTOPS #4 Event in February. This $93,980 appears to be the biggest score of his career on FullTilt.  Bryan “bparis” Paris is a solid tournament grinder with a plethora of five figure scores to his name on PokerStars and FullTilt totaling nearly $3,000,000 in cashes between the two sites.  His biggest score came in this very event last June where he took down the title amongst 2,042 players for $83,293.

FullTilt Sunday Brawl $400k Guaranteed

The “biggest” event of the day on FullTilt flopped hard yesterday as only 3,030 players entered the $750k forcing FullTilt to pay out $144,000 in overlay. This is one of the biggest overlays in Sunday major history and all can just hope it won’t lead to FullTilt dropping the guarantee on their biggest weekly event.  The exact same number of FullTilt red pros played in the $750k that did in the Warm-Up and they fared slightly better as Roy Winston and Keith Sexton both managed to make the money. Other recognizable faces on hand were Adam Schoenfeld, sports-betting savant Alan Boston, and Steve Brecher.

Well-known poker professional Darrell “Gigabet” Dicken made the final table and busted in 4th place for $41,400.  Dicken has had minor success online but has a large amount of six-figure scores on the live tournament scene where he won the Five Star WPT Championship in April 2008 for $223,330 as well as the Harrah’s Rincon Poker Championship in 2006 for $372,780.  Overall he has more than $1,700,000 in cashes grinding live tournaments.  The first player to bust at the final table was Timothy “Tim0thee” Adams who has more than $1,000,000 in cashes between FullTilt and PokerStars, including a runner-up finish in this very event a few years ago for $91,015. Eventual winner “mrfsy” was fresh off a near miss in the $1M Guarantee last December where he finished 5th for $51,865. This was easily the biggest score of his career as he declined to chop and ended up taking home $132,787 for a hard days work.

The tournament was able to surpass its smaller guarantee as 1,048 entrants created a $209,600 prize pool. A smaller contingent of FullTilt professionals played in the Mulligan as only 10 entered, including Jon Turner, Michael Tureniec, and Caio Pimenta. Chrisitan Kruel was the only red pro who made the money as his deep run ended just shy of the final table in 28th place.  Eventual winner “AsMetzmagnyA” took home the 2nd biggest score of his career as his $47,160 cash finished just behind a 3rd place finish in the $750k in March 2009 for $54,964. He has multiple major final tables on his resume including a 3rd in the Mulligan and a win in FTOPS Event #3 last year for more than $27,000.
