The presence of the 2010 WSOP has put a big dent in online poker tournaments lately.  PokerStars and FullTilt have both felt the effects of the world’s biggest tournament series and yesterday was no exception. With the $1,000 NL Hold’em Event #47 running alongside the $1,500 NL Event #49 there were a lot of people grinding at the Rio compared to the Sunday majors online.  Adding to this problem was PokerStars recent dismissal of French poker players from their site which went into effect earlier in the week. These two big issues caused a huge drop in attendance and created a lot of overlay for those who showed up.

The $750,000 Guaranteed Sunday Warm-Up kicked things off as always, but without its usual bang as there was a noticeable dip in attendance yesterday. With only 3,258 players waking up for the day’s first event, PokerStars was forced nearly $100,000 in overlay in a tournament that typically surpasses the $900,000 prize pool mark.  Making the most of the smaller field was “golferen50” who outlasted “Mrsgardener” heads-up for the title and a $117,750 pay-day. While for most this might be considered a life-changing score, golferen50 already experienced such a moment this past February where he finished 2nd in the Sunday Million for $189,651.

6. croll103 $24,375

9. pececada $6,000

The lack of attendance in the Warm-Up was a bad sign of things to come yesterday as the weekend’s biggest poker tournament, the Sunday Million on Stars, came woefully short of the necessary 7,500 entrants to reach its $1.5M Guarantee. With only 6,640 players ponying up the $200+$15 buy-in PokerStars had to pay $172,000 out of its own pockets to match the guarantee.  This is by far and away the biggest overlay the Million has had since the guarantee was upped to $1,500,000 last year.

Perhaps the smaller field allowed a few more professionals to reach the final table as there were a couple recognizable faces making deep runs late last night. Two top-ranked MTT pros in “PokerSavage1” and “ImDaNuts” finished in the middle of the final table pack in 5th and 4th place respectively.  This wasn’t PokerSavage1’s first brush with Sunday Million greatness as two years ago he finished 2nd in this very event for $120,514. He has nearly a dozen $20,000+ scores on his resume and tends to play in only the biggest tournaments each week. ImDaNuts surpassed the $1,000,000 mark in career cashes on Stars with his $82,500 paycheck yesterday. The former winner of the Sunday500 has also shipped numerous $109r tournaments throughout his career.

The Sunday500 joined in on the overlay fun yesterday as the tournament fell 78 entrants short of its guarantee forcing Stars to pay $39,000 in overlay. The 1st place prize got even smaller at the final table when the last three players decided to chop leaving $75,795 as the biggest piece of the pie. That amount went to Fabiano Kovalski who eventually took 2nd place which only mattered in terms of TLB points. The $75k score was the biggest of his career on Stars by far and another solid score in a career that appears to have just started this year.  Other notable names at the final table included Bruno “Bruno GT” Terra who finished 5th, Bryan “PrimordialAA” Pellegrino who took 6th, and Tim “1BigAceHole” Shotland who busted in 8th. All three have some big scores on their resumes including Shotland who shipped the $1k Monday on FullTilt last month for $113,250 and the Quarter Million on Stars last year for $57,054. Terra has taken down numerous $109r’s including one in 2008 for $79,147.

Competing with the Sunday500 for the saltiest final table of the day was the $215 re-buy which narrowly surpassed its $150,000 guarantee. With plenty of MTT professionals on hand the final table came down to Amit “AMAK316” Makhija and “shampusik” for the $33,497 first-place check.  Makhija has had ample success both online and in live events including a 5th place finish in Event #17 at the 2009 WSOP for $179,866 and a runner-up finished at the 2008 Legends of Poker for $563,320. Shampusik was certainly not as experienced as his final table foe but took down the title nonetheless. The $33,497 score was the 2nd biggest of his career, well behind a $63,500 cash for finishing 2nd in the Sunday500 earlier this year.

Other well known professionals at the final table were Connor “blanconegro” Drinan, Matthias “goodvibe1” Neu, and “insanocut”. All three players are no stranger to success on Stars having won a combined $3,000,000 on the world’s biggest poker site. Drinan himself has had two $120,000+ scores both for finishing 2nd in WCOOP and SCOOP events.

Closing out the day on PokerStars was the $250k Sunday Second Chance which continued the trend of big name professionals at final tables yesterday. With just over 1,250 in the field the tournament also continued its recent streak of passing the $250,000 guarantee.  Thayer “THAY3R” Rasumssen is one of the biggest names in online poker tournaments and found himself heads-up against MCMATTO late last night for a $46,501 first-place check. The top-ranked tournament professional has a ton of $30,000+ scores on his resume including a win in the $1k Monday for $63,700, the $109r for $40,219, and other final table appearances in major events. All of that experience was not enough to outlast another very good player in Matt “MCMATTO” Affleck who took himself over the $1,000,000 mark in cashes on Stars with his win yesterday.  More than half of those cashes came in one tournament, SCOOP Event #8 last April where he won the $3,150 buy-in championship for $550,500.  He also chopped FTOPS Event #24 earlier this year for $80,843.

FullTilt was also back with their Sunday compliment of majors yesterday including the $400k Brawl, $750k Guarantee, and $200k Mulligan.  Both the Brawl and Mulligan were able to creep past their guarantees but the $750k came up well short. There were plenty of FullTilt professionals on hand in each event including 15 in the Brawl. One professional, “R Romanello”, found his way to the final table and took 4th place for $31,095. This is one of the best finishes by a FullTilt “red pro” this year and hopefully a sign of good things to come. Other professionals in the field included Isaac “Menlo” Baron, Mike “timex” McDonald, and 82nd place finisher Aaron Bartley.

Eventual winner “19isthisit66” shipped the biggest score of his young career after taking down “kenny05” heads-up for the Brawl title.  This was Kenny05’s 4th five-figure score on FullTilt which includes a win in the $200k re-buy earlier this year for $63,941. As always, the Brawl tacks on $40 to a player’s earnings every time he/she eliminates a fellow opponent.

Just like the Warm-Up and Million on Stars the biggest tournament of the week on FullTilt fell way short of its guarantee yesterday. With only 3,125 players in attendance FullTilt had to pay $125,000 out of its very deep pockets to generate the $750,000 guaranteed prize pool. Just under 20 FullTilt sponsored professionals took time out from their WSOP schedules to play in the day’s biggest tournament and Jon Turner went the furthest before busting in 68th place. Joining Turner in the money was Burno Stefanelli and Isaac Baron in 248th and 373rd place respectively.

Brendon “Brendooor” Rubie took home 2nd place and $80,250 in prize money. This was the second biggest score of his career on FullTilt just behind a $93,000 win in the $1K Monday last May. He also has a miniFTOPS victory to his name which he won last September for $75,480. Joseph “MTstackin88” Spanne finished just behind Rubie in 3rd place for $52,500. This was the biggest score of his career and inched him closer to the $500,000 mark in career cashes on FullTilt. Eventual winner “zombiebird” was the least experienced player at the final table but that did not stop him from winning over $132,000 yesterday. With only one other four-figure score on his resume zomebiebird truly is another online poker rags-to-riches story.

Bringing another Sunday to its conclusion was the $200,000 guaranteed Sunday Mulligan which gives every grinder one final shot at a big weekend score. With a poor showing from the FullTilt contingent there was plenty of room for non-professionals to thrive at the Mulligan final table. Jon Turner again led the FullTilt red pros as he took 25th place and another solid cash in a Sunday major. The Mulligan title came down to Carter “cswilder” Swidler and Laurent “macqueen56” Bachelet, two solid tourney pros. There was little drama as heads-up began and players decided upon a chip-chop which left Bachelet with $45,116 and the title. This was the biggest score of his career on FullTilt and payback for a 2nd place finish in this very event last year. Swidler took home $37,204 after the chop which was the 4th $30,000+ cash on his resume and the 3rd time he has finished in the top-3 of the Mulligan with in the past 18 months.
