Online tournaments continued to struggle this pas weekend as the majority of the Sunday majors again failed to reach their respective guarantees. While tournaments saw a slight rise from the July 4th weekend, they are still nowhere near their peak just before the World Series of Poker. With just the Main Event remaining at the 2010 WSOP one can only hope online events will regain their popularity in the upcoming weeks.

The Sunday Warm-Up had been hovering around the $900,000 prize pool mark before the series, with 4,500+ players being a regularity. Since the WSOP began the Warm-Up has seen a sharp decline and has lost about 33% of its player pool over the past six weeks. Yesterday was no exception as only 2,990 players entered the $750,000 guaranteed event forcing PokerStars to dig deep into its own pockets and come up with $152,000 in overlay. What is even more telling is the $750k on FullTilt finally surpassed the Warm-Up as it had more than 3,200 entrants yesterday. Taking  even more thunder out of the Warm-Up was a 4-way chip-chop at the final table which guaranteed no one was walking away with a six-figure payday.  Taking home the biggest piece of the pie was “Akustikus” who won an extra $10,000 for outlasting his fellow competitors post chop.  The $90,000 score was easily the biggest of his career on Stars and in fact was his first five-figure score. Runner-Up “Fled’ won $71,000 for coming up just short yesterday which bested a win a few months ago in a $109 FO for $12,258.

The Sunday Million continues its free fall and there was no stopping it this week as only 6,375 players entered the week’s biggest event creating $225,000 in overlay. This is an absurd amount of free money for those playing and even surpasses the guarantee of a few of the events on the STR! One of the best online tournament players around shipped the smaller Million yesterday. Taking home $228,150 for his efforts was “puffinmypurp” who earned the third $100k score of his career. With more than $2,000,000 in cashes between PokerStars and FullTilt he certainly has earned his top-50 ranking.  He has two big wins on FullTilt for just over $100,000 including a victory in the $1k Monday last year for $100,250. The Sunday $500k followed suit and failed to reach its guarantee with only 899 entrants causing more than $50,000 in overlay. The day’s most prestigious event had a solid final table nonetheless including Brandon “anybodybut” Setzer and Jeremy “JBurleson” Burleson who battled it out heads-up for the $90,000 first-place check. The top-200 ranked Burleson is no stranger to the Sunday Tournament Report having won the Second Chance and finishing 4th in the Sunday500 previously.  Setzer took down the “Micro Million” earlier this year in February for more than $125,000 in a tournament with a $40 entry fee and more than 40,000 players.  He used that experience late last night to take down the $500k and $90,000. Burleson had to “settle” for a $64,150 payday for his runner-up finish.

It took four majors yesterday but PokerStars finally had an event reach its guarantee as the $215 rebuy saw 214 players rebuy and add-on just enough to create a $158,000 prize pool. Matt “VerySexual” Larsh battled with “I’am_Sound” for the title and $34,142. Both players have seen great success on the world’s largest poker site including Larsh who had made multiple major final tables and has more than $800,000 in scores over the years. I’am_Sound shipped the Super Tuesday last year for more than $68,000 in a field that included FatsoFat6060 and tysonduke23.  The $215r final table also saw well known players Nicholas “GripDsNutz” Grippo, Anthony “D1rtyR1v3r” Nardi, and Tim “1bigacehole” Shotland who finished in3rd, 5th, and 7th place respectively.

The $250,000 guaranteed Sunday Second Chance finished off an average day of events at PokerStars with 1,251 Entrants sneaking the tournament past its guarantee. A few recognizable faces made the final table including eventual winner “Telefonkiosk” who took home the title and just over $40,000 after a two-way chip-chop. The $40k cash was just another strong finish on a resume that includes multiple wins in the $109r and more than $1,500,000 in career cashes on PokerStars alone. Alex “AWice” Wice was the other guilty party in the chop earning himself nearly $39,000 for a hard day’s work. The former winner of a WCOOP $215r for $135,000 shipped the 2nd biggest cash of his career on PokerStars.

FullTilt also continued their streak of bad luck as both the Brawl and $750k fell short of their guarantees yesterday.  The Sunday Brawl prize pool had been averaging well over $500,000 prior to the 2010 WSOP but has since ducked well below its $400,000 guarantee.  Adding to the problem is $40 from each entry fee going to the “KO” prize pool which awards competitors for busting their opponents. Only 1,905 players were on hand yesterday including a small contingent of FullTilt sponsored professionals.  Just 189 spots were paid including Bruno Stefanelli, the only FullTilt pro to make the money. Daniele Mazzia and Kelly Kim came close but ultimately bubbled the day’s earliest major.  Brian “MrJackels” Mouritsen took home third place yesterday for just over $40,000.  “Greenerbels1” who finished 2nd in the Mulligan earlier this year for $33,936 again found himself in the runner-up position after falling to “CrazyLucky21”. Greenerbels1 appeared to be the most experienced of the final three but it was crazylucky21 who took home the biggest score of his career and the Sunday Brawl title.

The $750k is the biggest major of the day on FullTilt and with a $200+$16 entry fee needs 3,750 players to reach its guarantee. Unfortunately the $750k never sniffed that total as only 3,203 players entered forcing FullTilt to pay nearly $110,000 in overlay. Twenty-one FullTilt “red pros” played in the $750k including Roy Winston and Soraya Homam who were the only two inside the top 522 and in the money.  Other well known players participating included Lee Watkinson, Mike “timex” McDonald, and Ram Vaswani. Eventual winner “vengrinj” is no stranger to success in online tournaments having won the $100k, $80k, and $70k guaranteed on PokerStars over the past 12 months. He also shipped the $20,500 guarantee on FullTilt last October for more than $10,000.  Tommy “blanks plz” Wesley finished in 4th place for $41,400.  This was the biggest cash in a career that includes wins in the $22.5k and $32k guarantees on FullTilt.  Highly-ranked professional “StevoL_7” finished one spot worth in 5th place for $31,050.  The high-stakes grinder has a few big scores to his name including a win in the Sunday Brawl in 2008 as well as a victory in the $150k on Absolute this past may for $62,250.

Ending another disappointing day of tournaments on FullTilt was the Sunday Mulligan which crept back its $200,000 guarantee with 1,092 entrants and a $218,000 prize pool.  Only a handful of FullTilt professionals were on hand for the day’s latest major including Jeff Madsen and Jon Turner who both made the money in 60th and 54th place respectively. The other professionals in the event were Caio Pimenta, Mihai Manole, Mike McDonald, S Gromenkova, and Steve Yea. Making the final table a bit more interesting was Joe “hoodini10” Udine. The top-100 ranked MTT professional is best known for winning the FTOPS Event #12 last year for $304,793. Udine has more than $3,200,000 in cashes between PokerStars and FullTilt and also won the Second Chance a few years ago.  Unfortunately Udine was unable to make a big splash as he busted in 6th place and took home just less than $10,000.  Taking down the Mulligan was “linkocrac” who took down another $10k+ score on FullTilt. The $49,140 win was the biggest of his career and makes up for some other near misses in major final tables.
