A very happy Independence Day weekend to all! Amidst the parties, fireworks, hot dogs, and family reunions there was plenty of poker to be played the weekend. The 2010 WSOP is starting to wind down and a few major events concluded over the long weekend including the $10,000 PLO, $25,000 6max, WSOP Tournament of Champions, and the $5,000 Ante Up for Africa. For updates and full write-ups on all the big tournaments make sure to check out the FlopTurnRiver News Section at the top of this page.  Along with completed tournaments we will also be posting daily updates for the $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event which began earlier today.

The July 4th festivities along with the WSOP put a huge dent in online poker attendance yesterday as evidenced by over $1,000,000 with of overlays in the Sunday majors between PokerStars and FullTilt.  Some tournaments, such as the Million, saw more than $250,000 in overlay paid out to relatively small fields. One can only hope with the WSOP coming to an end and summer travels winding down that online tournaments will return to where they were earlier in 2010.

A great example of the downturn in attendance can be seen in the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars. Typically the 2nd biggest tournament of the day on Sunday it was crushing its $750k guarantee before the WSOP started. Lately, however, the tournament has failed to even reach its guarantee and had to pay out nearly $100,000 in overlay yesterday. While this is surely loved by those participating they may soon feel the effects as well if PokerStars decides to drop the guarantee.

Top-10 ranked tournament pro “ImDaNuts” again found his way onto the STR having won the Sunday500 in April and finishing 4th in the Million just last week. This time around he was making a deep run in the Warm-Up where he ultimately busted in 3rd place for $61,875. Outlasting one of the world’s best were “marado86” and “kloris83” who were certainly outclassed by their opposition but it did not seem to affect them as they took home $117,750 and $87,750 respectively.  Another well known professional, “joemac17”, was the first to bust at the final table and only took home $6,000 for a long days work.  This cash failed to crack his top-20 scores that include a $70,835 runner-up finish in the $109r and a $63,500 for finishing 2nd in the Sunday500 last year.

PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up $750k Guaranteed

2. kloris83 $87,750

The lack of players in the Warm-Up was a bad sign for those looking for a huge Sunday Million field. Fears were quickly realized as the tournament fell more than 1,300 players short of reaching it’s $1,500,000 guarantee and forced PokerStars to dig deep into its pockets with more than $270,000 in overlay. The smaller field certainly opened the tournament up to the better players including “JIZOINT” who eventually finished in 8th place for just over $18,000. The highly ranked professional has multiple big wins on his resume including the $1k Monday on FullTilt and the $250k on Titan Poker. Overall he has more than a handful of $20,000 scores and appears to have had great success on a multitude of sites. The final four players did not take long to decide upon a chip chop which left just $30,000 to the winner, “iSpeeZ”. It is unfortunate to see the week’s biggest event end in a 4-way chop but certainly understandable when so much money divides the top few spots. Below are the final table stacks, bust-out hands, and chop-adjusted pay outs:

Rounding out the trio of big majors on Stars was the $500k Guaranteed which followed suit in overlay with nearly $90,000 added to the 811 player field. As things typically work out, the smaller the field, the better the players. The final table had plenty of highly recognizable names including Ryan “ryanbluf” Karp, Chris “Big Huni” Hunichen, and Mike “Sowerss” Sowers. SowersUNCC as he’s known the most of the online poker world was the first of the trio to bust as he fell in 6th place for $20,200.  While a $20k cash might be a career best for most, for Sowers it barely registers on a resume that includes three scores over $100,000, including a $448,500 cash for finishing 2nd in the $10,000 WCOOP High Roller event last September. He also took down a WCOOP tournament that very same month for $145,376 in a $1,050 Limit Hold’em event.

Karp and Hunichen ended up heads-up for the title and a $90,000 first-place check. Karp, who previously won an FTOPS Event in 2008 for $121,184, was unable to overtake Hunichen and earned $65,000 for his 2nd place finish.  Karp is making a bit of a habit out of 2nd/3rd place finishes in major events including two 2nds and a 3rd in the Super Tuesday as well as a 2nd in the $215r last month. The $90k winners score was the biggest of Hunichen’s career which includes a win in the Wednesday Quarter Million for $50,281 and the $90k Guaranteed on FullTilt for $40,248.

Despite the majors failing to reach their guarantees one can always rely on the smaller events like the $215 re-buy to come through in the clutch. That is, until yesterday, which saw the $215r fail to reach its already shrunken $150,000 guarantee. The week’s largest re-buy event, which always boasts a strong field and even stronger final table, also fell victim to the July 4th curse. A very familiar face in online poker found his way to heads-up play in the form of “Empire2000”, or better known to the online community as “EmpireMaker”.  Considered more of a cash game player Empire2000 has seen plenty of success on the tourney scene including a win in this very event a few years back. It makes sense that cash game players tend to enjoy the re-buy tournaments which ultimately result in deeper stack play and more post flop action.

Four-time $109r winner “Jaguar1” finished in 7th place while STR frequenter “shampusik” backed up his win in this very event last week with another final table appearance, taking 4th place and more than $13,000. Eventual winner “UpmaxH” is no stranger to re-buy success having won a huge $109r just two weeks ago for $72,354.

Finishing off a sub par day of tournaments at PokerStars was the $250,000 guaranteed Second Chance. Despite the recent drop in attendance the Second Chance had been surpassing the $300,000 prize pool mark with regularity. The later start time appeals to those busting out of WSOP events as well as players looking for one final shot at a $50,000+ Sunday score. Even the Second Chance could not muster up enough players to reach its guarantee as it fell nearly 200 players and $40,000 short of the quarter-million prize pool mark. A FullTilt professional wandered over to the PokerStars felt yesterday and made one of his two major final tables. Mike “timex” McDonald, who seems more concerned with online events than the WSOP, found himself at both the Second Chance and Mulligan final tables yesterday.  The youngest EPT champion ever, McDonald won the German Open in 2008 for more than $1,370,000. Online he has found similar success under the moniker Timex including his sponsorship deal with the world’s 2nd biggest poker site, FullTilt.

While PokerStars paid out well over $500,000 in overlay amongst their majors they were not alone yesterday. FullTilt also had big time struggles in filling their three biggest events, the $400k Brawl, $750k Guarantee, and $200k Mulligan. In fact, out of our standard eight tournaments covered in the STR not a single one found enough entrants to reach its respective guarantee.  Kicking the day off on FullTilt was the $240+$16 Sunday Brawl. The tournament carries a higher entry fee because it is a “KO”, or knock-out event which pays $40 to a player every time he/she eliminates a fellow opponent. For some, including those at the final table, this can result in a nice little boost for $300-$500 over the course of the event. For others the $40 can be too alluring, forcing lesser experienced players to take too many risks in hopes of earning some extra cash.

Joining the more than 1,800 player field were 15 FullTilt sponsored professionals including Stuart Patterson and Cyndy Violette who both managed to make the money. Other recognizable names included Ram Vaswani, Aaron Bartley, and Mike “Timex” McDonald. The final table was highlighted by “LeoEleven”, better known as “thecronic420” to the online poker community. He was clearly the class of the table having nearly a dozen $30k+ scores to his name including a runner-up finish in the Million last year for $132,176 and a win in the $200k on FullTilt earlier this year for $74,062. Joining him was another highly ranked professional, “smokrokbyflock”, who took home 2nd place and $54,400.  This was just another big score on a resume that includes a 3rd place finish in a SCOOP High event earlier this year for $105,780 and multiple wins in the $109r over the course of his career.

The $750k fell nearly $250,000 shy of its guarantee yesterday as a paltry 2,520 players entered FullTilt’s biggest weekly event. The FullTilt professionals had a strong showing including Somyung Sim who finished in 5th place earning more than $31,000 for his efforts.  A few other professionals, including the colorful Toto Leonidas, finished inside the top 522 and made the money.  Runner-up “DownByDaBridge” took home the biggest score of his career and the 3rd five-figure score on his resume.  Eventual winner “loose_cannon_jj” nearly won a MSOP Event in May, finishing 3rd in a 7-game tournament for $28,305. Early Monday morning he finally got that big score taking home over $132,000 for taking home the week’s biggest event on FTP.

The day came to a merciful end with the Sunday Mulligan which much like the majors before it, came in well short of its $200,000 guarantee. With only 880 players and $24,000 in overlay, the Mulligan was the smallest of the big tournaments yesterday. Making the most of his time on the virtual felt last night was Mike McDonald who as noted before, made his 2nd final table of the day and finished 5th in the Mulligan for $12,500.  Only seven FullTilt “red pros” played in the Mulligan and McDonald was the only one fortunate enough to make the money.  Taking down the title was Jason “JaspudUF” Lee who is a well known tournament player who had a handful of $20k+ scores to his name entering the Mulligan final table yesterday. The $36,00 cash for his win came in just behind a $42,020 5th place finish in FTOPS Event #1 in 2008 for the best score of his career.

As things typically work out the smaller the field, the better the players. While a $20k cash might be a career best for most for Sowers it barely registers on a resume that including three scores over $100,000 including a $448,500 cash for finishing 2nd in the $10,000 WCOOP High Roller event last September.

That is, until yesterday, which saw the $215r fail to reach it’s already shrunken $150,000 guarantee.
