With the WSOP finally winding down (the Main Event started Friday) online tournaments looked to pick back up this weekend.  While tournaments were down across the board during the WSOP, online poker usually gets a nice boost after the WSOP and once the newest episodes are aired on ESPN.

Getting the day started was the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars.  While most were glued to their TV watching an epic Wimbledon Final, 3,884 poker players paid the $200+$15 entry fee to the Warm-Up, easily besting the tournament’s $750,000 guarantee.  Making a big splash in the event was “pizzaiolo1”, a relatively unknown player who until last night had seen very little success at PokerStars.  Making it tough on pizzaiolo1 was “strip23”, a much more experienced player who took second place in the Sunday Million just three months ago.

As we’ve seen recently, experience failed to materialize into victory, as pizzaiolo1 took down the title and nearly $122,000 in first-place money.  Strip23 had to settle for second and just over $90,000, well behind the $167,630 he made in the Million in April.

The Sunday Million, unlike the Warm-Up, failed to reach it’s guarantee for successive weeks now.  Hopefully the Million will rebound after the WSOP, as it’d be a shame to see the guarantee drop in online poker’s biggest weekly event. The final table produced a familiar face for the first time in some while in Connor “blanconegro” Drinan, a high-stakes tournament professional. While he made a nice run he eventually busted in 4th place, earning just under $80,000.  This was by far and away his biggest score, although he does have 11 other $10,000+ cashes to his name, including a win in the $109r on Stars just two weeks ago.

The final two players “Lileor99” and “Jovdark6” played an epic heads-up battle, with many suck-outs maintaining the match.  Eventually the players agreed to an even chop, leaving $30,000 left to play for, which went to the winner, jovdark6.

A lot of big names in online tournament poker made it to the final table of the $215 re-buy last night.   Finishing in 9th place was Matt “ch0ppy” Kay, a top-20 ranked online professional with two huge scores to his name.  In 2007 he shipped the Sunday Million for over $201,000 and finished 3rd in a SCOOP Event in April for just over $128,000.  Overall he has nearly $1,500,000 in cashes on PokerStars alone.

“S00tedjokers”, another well-known professional, finished in 7th place.  He has finaltabled the $215r numerous times, yet his best finish was a runner-up score in May for $30,000.  He has three $50,000+ scores to his name including a win in the $109r in 2008.

Heads-Up Play came down to Steve “mcnallyville” McNally and “rivermanl”, two well-known high-stakes professionals.  While both players are quite good, the edge certainly had to be with rivermanl, who has many more big scores to his name including a win in an FTOPS Event last year for over $137,000.  Mcnally was not to be deterred, as his pocket Kings were good enough to holding against pocket 6’s for the title and just under $40,000 in cash.Seat 3: mcnallyville (969583 in chips)

The Sunday500 saw a big drop in attendance this week, as only 927 player entered, forcing PokerStars to pay nearly $40,000 in overlay.  One of the more interesting final hands in recent tournament history took place as a three-way all-in gave “arodss3” the title and $90,000.   Coming up short was “PokerSavage1”, a high-stakes professional who nearly won the Sunday Million last year, taking home $120,513 for second place. The $48,000 he collected last night was easily the second biggest cash of his career.

Rounding out PokerStars day of big buy-in tournaments is the Sunday Second Chance.  While the tournament’s guarantee was recently dropped from $250k to $200k, the entrants seem not to care as 1,270 players created a $254,000 prize pool last night.  Hopefully PokerStars will re-assess this tournament and kick the guarantee back up to $250,000 soon.

Heads-up play came down to “cporte1” and “IndoPlayer”, two players not known for big tournament cashes.  Not much information could be found on cporte1, as he seems to fancy cash games over tournaments, chances are he’ll change his tune after last night’s score. “IndoPlayer” has had mild success online, winning the $11r twice, each time for around $13,000.  A sick final hand left cporte1 out in the cold, when his pocket Kings lost to A2o for the title. IndoPlayer took home time title and just over $46,000.

The Sunday Brawl continues to best it’s $350k guarantee, making one wonder why FullTilt has yet to increase the guarantee to $400,000. For those unaware, the Brawl in a Knock-Out style tournament which pays $40 to a player every time he/she busts another from the tournament. With only one event running at the WSOP more FullTilt professionals were available to play the Brawl, including David Pham, Eric Froehlich, and Scott Fischman. The final table was devoid of any huge names in poker, as Tannina80 was able to outlast zackdd for the title and just over $80,000 in first-place money.

The last event of the day, the $200+$16 Mulligan on FullTilt gives every tournament grinder a final shot at a big Sunday payday.  Thirteen FullTilt professionals managed to play in the Mulligan including Jon Turner, Mandy B, and Michael Craig.  There must have been something going around FullTilt on Sunday, because all three final tables were quite lackluster, with out any big names to be found.  Luckily “THE_GOLDMINE” was able to reverse the cycle, as the previous winner of the $750k was able to take down the Mulligan for $50,400.
