With the 2010 World Series of Poker now completely in the rear-view mirror, online poker tournaments have started to recover. Still not fully resuscitated from their pre-June peak, tournaments like the $750k on FullTilt have struggled to get back in the black. However, most events are easily besting their guarantees including all five majors on PokerStars. Starting each Sunday with the $750 Warm-Up, PokerStars actually has the 1st and 2nd biggest events of the weekend. With over 4,000 players entering the day’s earliest major this weekend the Warm-Up easily surpassed the $750k on FullTilt.
Making an appearance at the final table was one of the most feared online tournament players of the past few years, Alex “AJKHoosier1” Kamberis. With more than $4,000,000 in cashes on FullTilt and PokerStars alone, including a $941,735 score in 2008’s WCOOP, Kamberis’ resume ranks up there with the best in the world. For one reason or another he decided to take a chop in the Warm-Up yesterday against “Buffett1986” for just over $101,000. Despite ending the Warm-Up abruptly it wasn’t the last we’ll be seeing of Hoosier in this report. This was Buffett1986’s biggest score of his career and only his 3rd five-figure score on PokerStars. His biggest victory before yesterday was a win in the $55r earlier this year for just over $11,000.

The Sunday Million had a handful of familiar faces at the final table starting with 8th place finisher “aaaaaaaa” whose $18,853 cash barely snuck in the top-20 of his career scores on PokerStars. The highly-respected tournament professional won the FTOPS Main Event in 2007 for $385,937 and nearly shipped the $530 WCOOP 2-day event last year, taking 4th for $171,022. With nearly a dozen $30k+ cashes to his name, aaaaaaaa is certainly one of the best online tournament players in the world. Tommy “TBONE87” Felice took 4th place yesterday for a little more than $82,000. This was his biggest cash since finishing 4th in FTOPS Event #4 this April for $47,400. Eventual champion “aqua44” came out of nowhere to take down the title and more than $245,000. Without a five-figure cash to his name this certainly was a bit of a Cinderella story.

The Sunday $500,000 guaranteed continues to revive itself as it is slowly but steadily heading back towards the 1,100 entrants mark. Yesterday 1,061 players entered the most prestigious event of the day creating a $530,500 prize pool. One of the more recognizable names at the final table was “Steve0L”, a highly ranked tournament professional with a few big wins to his name including the Sunday Brawl in 2008 for $65,543. The high-stakes pro seems to make a lot of money in the $109r on PokerStars which he has final tabled numerous times and won once for nearly $29,000. Vinicius “vinifenomeno” Teles finished 8th in the $500k yesterday, one spot behind Steve0L. The $10,345 cash was the second biggest of his career on Stars and the 2nd major final table he has made in the past four weeks. Just two weeks ago Teles also found himself at the Sunday Million final table where he again made an early exit, only earning $32,108 for a long day’s work.
The tournament came down to a chip-chop between “oaktree50” and “StigR” who both quickly accepted an equal deal and ended the tournament one hand later. There isn’t much known about either player and they both seemed in a bit over their heads yesterday. Still, with a tough final table and $78,938 in their pockets, they proved to the poker world just how skilled they really are.

Remember AJKHoosier1 from earlier in the report? Last time we saw him he was losing what was effectively a $10,000 winner-take-all freeroll after chopping the Sunday Warm-Up. He once again found himself battling for a $10,000 difference, this time during the $215 re-buy. Hoosier was joined by some very good poker players including 5th place finisher “Dr_Olson” who may not be the best tournament player in the world but is a feared high-stakes Limit Hold’em heads-up specialist. Other notable players included former Sunday Million winner “tysonduke23” and “squee451” who had a huge SCOOP series in May. Finishing in 9th was “zackattak13” who has made our report numerous times including a win in the Second Chance in May and the $500k last December.
While the Warm-Up did not go his way, Kamberis was able to take down “smokrokflock” for the $215r title and a $39,647 pay day. The runner-up smokrokflock shipped one of the biggest scores of his career which includes a few wins in the $109r for $84,206 and $49,030 as well as a $105,780 score for a third place finish in May’s SCOOP series.

Another solid day of MTTs on PokerStars ended with the Sunday Second Chance. The $250,000 guaranteed tournament has been the one stable event. What was not stable, however, was how “threatnasty” took down “djk123” for the win. After starting with a 3:1 chip-lead he all but busted. Down to his final 25,000 chips he managed to double up more than a handful of times, often with the worst hand. What was an enormous chiplead for djk123 suddenly evaporated in a crazy ten minute stretch of all-ins. The final blow was a bit of a set-up hand which saw AJo fall to Pocket Queens. The ever professional djk123 said nothing and took his lumps. It’s easy to do so when nearly $40,000 cushions the blow. The $39,933 score was only the 8th biggest of his career on Stars and adds onto a resume that includes more than $3,300,000 in cashes on the world’s largest poker site. With $55,202 in his pocket for the win, threatnasty boosted his career cashes on Stars above the half-million mark.

FullTilt continues to be the #2 poker site when it comes to players, cash games, and tournaments. With a solid trio of Sunday majors running each week along with the backing of some of the most famous players in the world, you might think FullTilt could eventually supplant PokerStars as the world-wide leader in online tournaments. Still, being the 2nd best in the case isn’t all bad as there was more than $1,500,000 up for grabs between the Brawl, $750k, and Mulligan yesterday. The Brawl kicked off the festivities with a solid showing. With more than 2,500 players in the field, there was $100,000 up for grabs in bounties and another $517,000 in the prize pool. For those who are unaware the Brawl is a Knock-Out event which pays $40 to a player every time he/she eliminates a fellow competitor.
Knocking out a regular player is one thing, but busting a FullTilt sponsored professional is a whole other level. Besides the $40, players who bust a “red pro” are sent a special t-shirt from FullTilt signifying their accomplishment. There were 32 FullTilt professionals playing yesterday, and all 32 of them busted. A few players were able to make the money including S Gromenkova, R Romanello, Mihai Manole, and Bruno Stefanelli. Most of the bigger names fell short of the money including Annette Oberstad, Carlos Mortensen, and Andrew “luckychewy” Lichtenberger. Jordan “Jymaster11” Young took down the final table and earned $104,951 in the process. The top-100 ranked professional has seen a lot of success on FullTilt in the past including victories in the $150k guaranteed for $58,370 and $60k guaranteed for $24,072 as well as a 3rd place finish MiniFTOPS Event #17 earlier this year for $29,772.

Folks, do not adjust your computer screens. Many hours after winning the Sunday Brawl Jordan Young found himself at the final table of the Sunday $750k. Despite not reaching its guarantee for what seems like many months now the $750,000 guaranteed still remains the biggest event of the week on FullTilt. This will all change next week when FTOPS XVII begins but for now the $750k remains supreme. However, the big story was not the failure to reach the guarantee but the fact that Jordan Young won the $750k just hours after shipping the Sunday Brawl. This is one of the craziest feats in online poker history and perhaps one of the most impressive runs since Dan Harrington made back-t0-back WSOP Main Event final tables in 2003 and 2004. With a $132,787 win in the $750k to go along with his $104,951 score in the Brawl, Young becomes potentially the first player to ever record two six-figure scores in one day in the history of tournament poker. This is sure to be talked about for some time.

Taking down the Sunday Mulligan was Jordan “Jymaster11” Young. Ok, gotcha there. Young was actually nowhere to be found at the Mulligan final table which meant someone else had a chance to win a major on FullTilt yesterday. The final table was stacked with solid players including eventual winner Aditya “Intervention” Agarwal, a top-100 ranked MTT pro with more than 20 $30k+ cashes to his name. The $57,904 first place check yesterday was built of the momentum he started last month by winning the $125k Guaranteed Rush event on FullTilt for $72,250. Runner-up “csimmsux” has seen plenty of success on FullTilt in the past. In fact, he might be one of the most highly decorated FTOPS players of all time.
