This past Sunday saw a sharp drop-off in major tournament attendance since the conclusion of FTOPS XIII.  Many of the tournaments that had been crushing their guarantees lately failed to even come close to enough entrants, forcing PokerStars to pay-out nearly $40,000 in overlay in the Million and Sunday500 combined.  Two sponsored professionals made final tables yesterday including Barry Greenstein in the Sunday Second Chance and Lee Watkinson in the Sunday Mulligan.  Greenstein failed to make much final table noise while Watkinson nearly shipped the Mulligan, taking 3rd for just over $25,000.

The day began with the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars seeing a decent drop in entrants. The past few weeks the tournament has surpassed 4,000 players, but yesterday only 3,911 professionals and amateurs alike ponied up the $200+$15 buy-in fee. Heads-up play came down to “calvo1989” and “Payacan”, neither of whom had a $10,000+ score to their name. In fact, it seems calvo1989 was quite the 180man grinder, having won 6 $12 180mans in the past five weeks. Payacan had seen a bit more success on PokerStars, taking 2nd in a $55 tournament Monday for $9,575.

The Sunday Million saw a steep drop in attendance as the tournament failed to reach the 7,500 entrants necessary to reach their guarantee. The final table was also a bit of a letdown, as once play became 6-handed the entire table agreed quickly to a chip-chop. Once again the winner of the Million did not earn the most money, as that honor went to 3rd place finisher “shawry5” who took home nearly $147,000 with the chop. Champion “tysonduke23” was only guaranteed $87,000 after the chop, but earned an additional $30,000 for taking down the table. The Sunday500 had a few big names make the final table yesterday including highly-ranked Joe “ender555” Ebanks. His 3rd place finish last night earned him $48,000, which was his highest recorded score of all time. Ebanks has won the $109r on PokerStars three times as well as both the $75k and $65k on FullTilt. Taking 7th place was “Bdbeatslayer”, another well known professional who nearly shipped the Million in June, taking 5th for $61,500. “Jane Smith”, who fell to “BrokenXJ08” during heads-up play, took down his 2nd biggest score behind a runner-up finish in the Million over three years ago.

The $215r saw one of the bigger names in online tournaments, “JohnnyBax”, make the final table.  His 5th place finish earned him just over $10,000, well shy of his career high, a $68,250 cash for winning the Super Tuesday on Pokerstars in April.  Heads-up play came down to “jasius” and “cabbie182”, two solid tournament grinders without huge scores to their name.  In the end jasius was able to win a crucial coin flip, taking down a massive pot which led to the victory:

The final tournament on PokerStars this past Sunday was the Second Chance, a $200k guaranteed NL Freeze-Out.  Barry “barryg1” Greenstein, also known as the “Robin Hood of Poker” because of all of his charitable donations, made an appearance at the final table.  Greenstein has won three WSOP bracelets, one of each in 2-7 NL, Pot-Limit Omaha, and Razz.  While NL may not be his best game, he proved his skills during this past season of High Stakes Poker, battling relentlessly with young phenom Tom “Durrrr” Dwan.

Taking down the title and nearly $48,000 was “SlippyJacks”, a player who is no stranger to success on PokerStars, having shipped a special $500 buy-in Sunday Million for over $240,000.  This was his third major win. He also shipped the $215r for $41,000 last December.

While PokerStars was struggling to reach their guarantees post FTOPS, FullTilt seemed to have little problem attracting enough players to their tournaments. The Sunday Brawl has been rolling lately, and this Sunday was no exception as 2,255 players created a $451,000 prize pool. For those unaware, the Brawl is a Knock-Out event which pays $40 to a player every time he/she eliminates a fellow competitor. Nearly 20 FullTilt sponsored professionals played in the event including Jordan Morgan, Lee Watkinson, and Marco Liesy.

The $750k is looking strong after a successful FTOPS XIII. This week over 4,000 players entered, creating an $808,000 prize pool, $100,985 of which went to winner “kuhnboy5” after a three-way chip-chop. Twenty-four FullTilt Red Pros played in the event including Steve Zolotow, Berry Johnston, and Keith Sexton.

The final event this Sunday was the Mulligan on FullTilt, a $200+$16 buy-in event giving all the tournament grinders a final shot at a big Sunday score. Nearly taking advantage of this opportunity was Lee Watkinson, a WSOP bracelet holder and member of the 2007 Main Event final-table, eventually busting in 8th for nearly $600,000. The $25,029 score was his highest record online cash, eclipsing a $12,864 cash for finishing 2nd in the $40k guaranteed just last week. Eventual winner “smerks” took down his biggest score on FullTilt, passing a $21,100 cash for a win in the Turbo $40k earlier this month.
