Sunday tournaments were out in full force yesterday as PokerStars ran their five majors and FullTilt was smack dab in the middle of FTOPS XVII. With a bunch of big guaranteed events and some of the best players in online poker on hand, this was one of the better Sundays in recent memory. For more in depth write-ups on all of the big FTOPS XVII events be sure to check out the rest of our News Section here at FlopTurnRiver.com. Full write-ups on FTOPS events will be available with-in 24 hours of their conclusion and will cover the FullTilt professionals on hand, big name online MTT pros, and the winners.

With most of the attention focused on FullTilt and FTOPS XVII it would have been acceptable for PokerStars to see a bit of a drop off yesterday. However, the world’s largest poker site once again proved why it’s the best as all of the Sunday majors busted through their guarantees by wide margins. The first major of the day, the $200+$15 Sunday Warm-Up, nearly reached the $850,000 prize pool mark. With almost $100,000 more than the $750k guarantee the Warm-Up again solidified itself as the 2nd biggest event of the week.  With more than $133,000 going to the winner there were a bunch of players at the final table looking to make a breakthrough score.

Taking down the Warm-Up and the biggest score of his career was “OlyDaJew” who appears to be a solid midstakes grinder who had yet to hit a huge score. With a few wins in $100 events as well as the $3r he certainly had a better resume entering the Warm-Up final table than a bunch of previous winners.  Runner-up “Bushman” took down another solid score on a resume that includes more than a handful of $20,000+ cashes including a 3rd place finish in the Second Chance in 2008 and 2nd place finish for $52,510 in the Super Tuesday last year. The two players had a solid battle before a key coinflip went OlyDaJew’s way giving him the title and a very nice payday.

The Sunday Million continues to grow since the 2010 World Series of Poker ended a few weeks ago. For a tournament that was nowhere near its guarantee for a month it has exploded back above the $1,5000,000 guarantee. Over 8,200 players entered Sunday’s biggest event yesterday creating a $1,640,400 prize pool and a massive $246,064 first-place check.  That big payday went to “cmis91” who recorded by far and away the biggest score of his short career.  Seventh place finisher “pocketnizzles” found his way to a major Sunday final table for the 3rd time in his career. He previously finished 4th in the Warm-Up in 2009 and 3rd in the Second Chance in 2008. With a 10th place finish in the Million as well, he certainly has a penchant for making deep runs in big events. Runner-up “Tonimonntana” earned over $180,000 yesterday, nearly $145,000 more than his next best finish, a $35,705 score for taking fourth place in the Sunday500 last December. Once again the Sunay500 proved why it is one of the toughest events to win each week. With a solid final table full of well-known online MTT professionals it takes a talented player to make his way through the field. With 1,142 players on hand the prize pool swelled to $571,000 yesterday which included a $97,070 first-place check.  The final table was highlighted by a few big names including “antesvante”, Brent “Astrolux85” Roberts, and “HEMIpowerSWT”. All three players have won major poker events including Sunday Millions, FTOPS events, and other big time tournaments. In fact, Roberts just won the first event of FTOPS XVII for over $164,000 last week. Antesvante is also no stranger to major success having won over $213,000 for shipping the Sunday Million. HEMIpowerSWT has also made some deep runs in majors and has a $81,376 win in the $109r as well as multiple top-3 finishes in the $215r, Sunday Warm-Up, and the Sunday500. The tournament came down to antesvante and “SLOPPYKLOD” who himself is no slouch.  He has won multiple $1k events on PokerStars including the Wednesday Quarter-Million for $61,555 and the Super Tuesday for $78,000. With over $1,500,000 in cashes he was quite a formidable opponent for the former Sunday Million winner. All of that high-stakes experience seemed to pay off for SLOPPYKLOD as he was able to take down antesvante heads-up for the Sunday500 crown and $97,070.

Just like the Sunday500 the $215 re-buy tends to have a small, albeit very strong field. The larger buy-in event tends to weed out any players who aren’t willing to spend at least $1,000 re-buying and adding on after the first break. With only 303 players in the field and a $206,400 prize pool the average buy-in was nearly $700 yesterday.  There were a ton of big names at the final table yesterday including eventual winner Mohsin “sms9231” Charania who took down Joseph “JBlaze20” Chaplin heads-up for the title and $42,312. Charania is best known for winning SCOOP Event #20 earlier this year for a massive $380,364 payday. He also finished 3rd in the Sunday Million in 2008 for $84,000 and has now won the $215r twice in his career.

Despite finishing second Chaplin still took home more than $30,000, which is another great score for a player who is used to coming up just short in Sunday majors. Chaplin has final tabled the Sunday Million and taken 3rd in the Sunday Warm-Up two times for $75,983 and $61,875 respectively.  He was able to ship the Monday $1k on FullTilt last year for $83,000 and has more than $1,500,000 in cashes between the world’s two biggest online poker sites. Seventh-place finisher “PokerNoob999” won a 2009 SCOOP event for $133,250 after a chip-chop and also shipped the Sunday500 in 2008 for $91,706. Matt “All_in_at420” Stout took 3rd place in the $215r yesterday for $23,323 which is actually just his 3rd best finish in this very event. With both a win and a runner-up finish in the past in the $215r, Stout is one of the more decorated re-buy players in recent history. He also has a win in the Sunday500 and the Second Chance for $105,354 and $50,299 respectively.

The final major of the day on PokerStars, the $250k Sunday Second Chance, ended strong with nearly 1,600 participants and a $318,400 prize pool.  The final table was headlined by Shawn “jordankickz” Busse who has made our report numerous times for deep runs in big events including a 3rd place finish in the Second Chance for $28,540 years ago. He also nearly won the FTOPS $300r last year before busting heads-up for a $163,798 payday.  Later that year he again took 2nd place, this time in the Sunday Brawl, for just over $66,000.  Much like the major final tables of the past, Busse failed to come through and had to settle for 6th place and a $13,523 check.

The tournament came down to “SHUGAbowl” and “Rakeoffer”. With nearly $100,000 left in the prize pool, the two players quickly decided to chop handing SHUGAbowl the title and nearly $51,000 for a hard day’s work.  Neither player had a big score to their name entering the final table so it makes sense for them to lock up a solid payday and take some variance out of the heads-up match. All that was left to play for were Tournament Leaderboard Points which went SHUGAbowl’s way when his QTo held up all-in PF against Rakeoffer’s 92o.

Only one FullTilt major, the $200k Sunday Mulligan, makes our tournament report this week as the $750k and Brawl were both substituted for by FTOPS XVII events. Again, be sure to check out the FlopTurnRiver News Section for in-depth articles on all the big events during the 17th installment of FullTilt’s Online Poker Series.  With other FTOPS events running there were plenty of FullTilt sponsored professionals on hand looking for a big score.

With more than 20 “red pros” in the Sunday Mulligan yesterday, including Jordan Morgan, Carlos Mortensen, and Scott Clements, there were plenty of chances for players to tangle with some of the more recognizable faces in poker.  Clements, along with Christian Kruel and Isaac “Menlo” Baron all made deep runs inside the top-75 yesterday. Kruel took his stack the furthest, busting just before the final two tables were formed in 19th place.  The final table had some solid players including Joe “Cappuccio816” Cappuccio who is a highly-ranked MTT pro. Cappuccio has shipped a few big events including the Sunday500 last year for $91,250 as well as the $109r for $36,798. After “Joey Capp” (as he’s known to the online world) busted in 3rd place the final two players decided upon a chip chop which divided up the remaining $102,000 in the prize pool. Eventual winner “DSchec” took down more than $52,000 which appears to be the biggest score of his career on a resume that includes numerous wins in midstakes re-buy events.

The Canadian poker pro is a long-time member and contributor to our Multi-Table Tournament forum. A big congrats goes to Chris and everyone else who found success in yesterday’s majors!
