The final Sunday of 2010 is in the books.  While most players were busy with holiday celebrations both PokerStars and FullTilt continued further with their typical weekend majors.  In a bit of a surprise there was not a huge drop off during the Christmas weekend as most of the tournaments were within earshot of their typical prize pools.  One tournament that seems to never miss a beat in the Sunday Warm-Up on PokerStars. The early-starting $750,000 guaranteed major event typically attracts well over 4,000 players and this past weekend was no exception.  With 4,366 players ponying up the $200+$15 buy-in the prize pool swelled to over $873,000 leaving nearly $137,000 for the winner.

The final table was graced by no other than Sorel “zangbezan24” Mizzi who is known by most as “Imper1um”. The uber high-stakes tournament and cash game professional is one of the most decorated online players of all time.  With more than a handful of $50,000+ scores to his name including wins in the Warm-Up and $215r on FullTilt, Mizzi has made a name for himself in weekend majors.  On the live poker scene Mizzi gained fame earlier this year when he finished 3rd in the $10,000 Aussie Millions Championship for $659,917.  Mizzi made quite a run at the final table but eventually busted in 3rd place for $72,039. Heads-up came down to “proFile” and “Muppetking” who were so happy to see Mizzi bust they quickly agreed upon an even chip chop with $10,000 left in the middle for the winner. That extra sleeve of $100s went to proFile when his A8 offsuit hit a 3-outer on the river against pocket 8’s for the win:

Much like the Warm-Up, the Sunday Million saw little drop-off despite the holiday festivities. In fact, if anything the Million saw a small boost in attendance as the total number of entrants flirted with the 9,000 mark. Still, 8,947 players were more than enough to make the Million the biggest event of the day with a $1,789,400 prize pool.  The tournament came down to three players, “pageh656”, “jpous”, and “Dick_Fosbury”, who agreed up on a three-way chop with $30,000 left in the middle.  That big chunk of change found its way into pageh656’s pocket who earned himself a $249,055 payday after the dust settled. The near quarter-million dollar score was the 2nd six-figure cash of his career and bolstered a resume which already included a win in FTOPS XVIII Event #1 just last month for $117,434. It’s no secret the most entertaining final table each week comes from the Sunday 500 on PokerStars. Due to the large buy-in and deep stacks the tournament tends to weed out weaker players which leaves a final table full of experienced professionals battling it out for a $90,000+ payday. Two well known professionals, Phil “USCphildo” Collins and Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet were on hand but busted in 4th and 5th place respectively.  Collins has won the $1k Monday on FullTilt multiple times and nearly won the $1,000,000 Guaranteed WCOOP Event 48 earlier this year before busting in 4th for $86,904.  Van Fleet might be one of the best 10 online players ever. He has a handful of six-figures scores on his resume including a WCOOP and FTOPS win. Van Fleet has nearly $3,000,000 in cashes on PokerStars alone and more than $5,000,000 online total. Eventual winner “diicman” took down “Ron Jovi 7” for the title when his Pocket 5’s out-raced AQ offsuit for the title. The $90,615 score was easily the biggest of his career on PokerStars and his first major victory on the world’s largest poker site.

While the Sunday 500 has the biggest buy-in, the Sunday $215 re-buy typically costs players more money. This is because your average player will re-buy at least once and add-on after the first 90 minute break. Unfortunately, yesterday, with just 205 entrants and not enough re-buys or add-ons, PokerStars had to pony up a small amount of overlay to reach the $150,000 guarantee. This was the first time in a long while the $215r failed to reach its guarantee and probably just an outlier due to the holiday weekend.  Controversial high-stakes professional Bryn Kenney made the final table but was eliminated early in 6th place for just $7,500. The egotistical Kenney rubbed a lot of people the wrong way earlier in his career but has since risen to great heights online playing in the biggest cash games ever on FullTilt and PokerStars. Nick “GripDsNutz” Grippo finished a few spots better than Kenney in 3rd place for $17,625. The five-figure score was just one of many on a resume that includes a win in the Brawl and four victories in the $200k on FullTilt. His 2nd place finish in the Warm-Up last year for $95,401 still stands as the biggest score of his career on PokerStars.  Amir “UhhMee” Barer took down fellow high-stakes professional “APowers1968” for the title.

Each player had seen major success online in the past with Baber winning an FTOPS event and APowers having won WCOOP Event #48 earlier this year. The two battled it out for a while before Baber got it in pre-flop way ahead with AK vs AQ.

Finishing off a strong day of online events on PokerStars was the $250,000 guaranteed Sunday Second Chance. The latest starting major actually tends to finish well ahead of the $500k, $215r, and Million because of its smaller stacks and faster levels. Still, the tournament leaves plenty of room for play at the final table which is all the railbirds can ask for.  7th place finisher “baneris” has seen plenty of success on Stars in the past having won the $215 Turbo $10k for $21,285 just last week.  With one of the better players out of the way early the battle for a $49,758 first-place check came down to “N1lmar” and “EZz_GAME”.  The final hand was a bit of a bad beat as N1lmar’s AJo outran Pocket Jacks for the title. The $36,168 second place score for EZz_GAME fell just short of his career best on PokerStars, a $40,280 cash for winning the $109r this past July. N1lmar’s near $50k score added to a resume that included a win in the $109r for $16,125 and a 3rd place finish in the $109 cubed earlier this year for $24,472.

FullTilt, not to be outdone by PokerStars, ran their full compliment of Sunday majors this weekend including the $400k Brawl, $750k Guaranteed, and $200k Mulligan. There were plenty of FullTilt sponsored professionals on hand in each event further adding to the excitement.  More than 30 FullTilt red pros entered the $240+$16 Brawl including Scott Fischman, former WSOP ME champion Carlos Mortensen, and David “the Dragon” Pham.  While no FTP pros made the final table there were a few online professionals on hand including Joey “Cappuccio816” Capp who finished in 3rd place for $49,935 and Yevgeniy “bballer88” Timoshenko who earned $17,503 for his 6th place finish. Both players are highly-respected online and live professionals who have multiple massive scores on their resumes. Capp won the Sunday500 on PokerStars last year for $91,250 and Timoshenko took down one of the biggest online scores of all time when he won the WCOOP Main Event last year for $1,715,200.  The Brawl title eventually went to “banana skirt” who earned a nice $104,504 payday.

The biggest weekly event on FullTilt, the $750,000 Guaranteed, nearly hit 4,000 players yesterday putting it in 3rd across all online poker rooms. Falling in just behind the Warm-Up on PokerStars the $791,000 prize pool in the $750k slotted more than $140,000 to eventual winner “rob131986”. More than 40 FullTilt professionals entered the $750k including Andrew “luckychewy” Lichtenberger, Lee Watkinson, Isaac “Menlo” Baron, and Cyndy Violette. Two well known professionals, Erica Schoenberg and Gavin Smith, both made the top-100 finishing in 87th and 79th place respectively.  In the end rob131986 was just too much for the strong field taking down the title and $140,047 in the process.  The mid-stakes online grinder earned the biggest score of his career and finished off a strong 2010 which saw him win the $109 cubed and $55r on PokerStars back in October.

Yesterday, more than 1,170 players showed up for this opportunity creating a $234,800 prize pool with $51,656 for first.  The final table was quite stacked with a handful of online professionals battling it out for the big payday.  Top-25 ranked Bjorn “kleath” Kleathersson was the most decorated member of the final table having won the $109r, Wednesday Quarter Million, and $109 cubed through out his career.  Even more impressive is the biggest score of his career was a second place finish in FTOPS Event #16 earlier this August for $191,800.  Eventual winner “Gaius Gracchus” easily earned the biggest score of his career.  A player that rarely plays on FullTilt, Gaius Gracchus took down just the 9th cash of his online career but boy was it a big one, earning $51,656 and the Sunday Mulligan title.
