Online poker history was made this past weekend as PokerStars celebrated its 10th anniversary in fine fashion. A huge slew of events awaited those wanting to grind Sunday tournaments, including a beefed up Sunday Million with a $10,000,000 guarantee. There was also a $1,000 high-roller event to go along with the $500k Warm-Up and $250k Sunday500. These events came on the heels of last weekend’s world-record event which saw 200,000 players compete in a $1 tournament on Stars.
The Million drew more than 62,000 players, creating one of the biggest prize pools in online poker history. With more than $12,000,000 in the middle and $2,000,000 slotted for the winner, there was some crazy action in the faster structure event. Unfortunately a lot of the final table hoopla came to an end quickly as the last six players decided upon a chip-chop which guaranteed everyone at least $580,000.
Other sites seemed to benefit from the Stars promo, as rooms like PartyPoker and the iPoker Network saw a nice boost in attendance in their major events. In fact, all of the Sunday majors easily surpassed their guarantees for the first time in some while. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come. As a rocky 2011 year in online poker comes to an end, it seems things might be turning around in the right direction for the start of 2012.
