It was an up and down weekend in online poker tournaments as numerous tournaments garnered huge attendance numbers while others struggled to reach their guarantees. Without much excitement surrounding online tournaments lately it is logical to see a bit of a drop-off in attendance figures, however tournaments like the Sunday Warm-Up, Brawl, and Million all continue to see players by the thousands compete for massive first place prizes.

The Warm-Up kicked off last Sunday with quite a bang.  Over 4,600 players entered the $200+$15 buy-in event easily crushing the $750,000 guarantee. With more than $935,000 in the prize pool and over $130,000 slated for the winner the Warm-Up might start needing it’s own precursor.  The final table came and went without a lot of suspense due to the dreaded chip-chop which ended the tournament once play became three-handed. With only $10,000 left in the pot after the chop the remaining players did not take themselves too seriously.  Eventual third-place finisher “Catenaccio” guaranteed himself more than $109,000 which rates as the biggest score of his career. This was not the first time Catenaccio found himself in the hunt at the Warm-Up final table. Just last year he took 3rd in this very event for about $30,000 less and earlier this year finished 3rd again for $75,190.  3rd place finishes seem to be his claim to fame as he also finished 3rd in a WCOOP Second Chance in 2008. Taking home the biggest piece of the pie was “Levan1971” who had seen very little success on PokerStars before Sunday. The $118,861 cash was the first five-figure score of his career and was one of the biggest scores online this past weekend.

The Sunday Million also fell victim to the chip-chop bug but only once heads-up play began.  The tournament came down to “Zareta” and “marado86” who only had $30,000 left to play for after both agreeing to take home just over $200,000. Zareta ended up winning the battle and earning a massive $230,000 payday. The six-figure score was by far and away the biggest of his career easily eclipsing a $11,682 cash in the $55 cubed the same day. It seems someone was running quite well this past Sunday.  Runner-up marado86 was no stranger to Sunday success having won the Warm-Up on July 4th earlier this year. He took home more than $203,000 after losing the $30,000 winner-take-all heads-up battle.

The Sunday500 continues to struggle to hit its guarantee as it once again fell short of the 1,000 entrants necessary to hit its $500,000 prize pool. Perhaps the $500+$30 buy-in is turning players off who would rather play 2 or 3 of the $215 majors instead.  The larger entry fee does tend to weed out a lot of the amateurs which leads to deep final tables full of seasoned professionals. This week was no exception as a handful of great players were on hand vying for the $87,400 first-place prize. Taking that honor was Arrested Developmentally named “Tobia$ Bluth” who also goes by “lnettles” online.  The big five-figure score rates 2nd on his lifetime achievements, well behind a 3rd place finish in FTOPS Event #22 this past August for a $146,929 payday.  Other big names at the final table included Grayon “gray31” Rampage who took 8th place for $10,000 even and Tommy “thecooler992” Tomasello who fared much better finishing in 3rd place for $47,500.

The $215 re-buy final table was once again stacked with a slew of big name professionals participating in the weeks biggest re-buy event.  Fourth-place finisher “Steven “PiKappRaider” Burkholder took home more than $14,000 for his efforts.  The highly regarded tournament professional has seen great success online including three $200,000+ scores. His biggest coup came in FTOPS Event #17 last year which he won for more than $245,000.  Fishing one spot worse in 5th was “Zackattak13” who is no stranger to the Weekend Tournament Wrap-Up.  Just recently he won the Sunday Second Chance for $50,913 as well as the Sunday500 for $88,543. Heads-up play came down to Zachary “HustlerGrune” Gruneberg and “TMoney0209”.  Gruneberg is used to winning big events but took 2nd place this week, good for $25,203. The big cash barely cracks to the top-10 on his resume which includes a win in the Sunday Warm-Up back in 2008 for $118,692. TMoney0209 was able to outlast Gruneberg for the title and a nice $34,959 payday when his AKo held up against JT:

Finishing off a strong day of events on PokerStars was the appropriately-named Sunday Second Chance. With a $250,000 guarantee and more than $50,000 going to the winner the $215 buy-in event gives all players one final shot at Sunday glory. Taking full advantage of this opportunity was “1-ronnyr3” who defeated “GasparLeMarc” during heads-up play for a $51,383 payday.  This was just the 2nd biggest score of his career on PokerStars and well behind a big win in the Wednesday Quarter Million in March for $81,941. Fifth-place finisher Michael “YrrsiNN” Huber is a highly ranked tournament professional who  shipped the $1,000,000 on FullTilt and nearly won the Sunday Brawl last year.

The FullTilt Sunday majors continue to come and go without much change. Each week the world’s 2nd largest poker site runs a trio of big time tournaments including the $400k Brawl, $750k Guaranteed, and $200k Mulligan.  While these tournaments have a tough time keeping up with the major events on PokerStars they are by far and away bigger than any series on other sites. The first event of the day is the Sunday Brawl which is a special Knock-Out event paying $40 to a player every time he/she eliminated a fellow opponent. On top of this, if a player if fortunate enough to bust a FullTilt sponsored professional they will earn themselves a special t-shirt.  There was ample opportunity to bust a pro this past Sunday as more than 30 FullTilt “red pros” were on hand including Scott Clements, David Pham, and Michael Tureniec who made the final table before busting in 8th place.

The Brawl was eventually won by “monkeybudgie” who earned the biggest payday of his career. The $106,737 score easily bested his previous career high a $17,775 win earlier this April in a $163 event. Runner-up “ply100” took home more than $68,000 for a hard days work, which also tops his online resume.

Much like the Sunday Million on PokerStars, the biggest event of the day on FullTilt came down to a heads-up chip-chop. The $750,000 Guarantee, which has been gaining some momentum lately, continued on its hot streak and nearly topped the $800,000 prize pool mark this past weekend. Among the 3,981 on hand included more than 40 FullTilt sponsored professionals. A few of the pros were fortunate enough to make the money including Soren Kongsgaard (151st) and Mihai Manole (167th).  The final table had a few familiar faces including Brendan “chickface” Edmonds who took home more than $120,000 after the chop. The six-figure score was the cherry on the top of a resume than includes multiple $50,000+ cashes. Runner-up “eyes7475” guaranteed himself $106,000 after the deal which also rates as the best score of his career and the first five or six-figure score on his resume.

Wrapping up the day of major events was the Sunday Mulligan on FullTilt. The $216 buy-in tournament carries a $200,000 guarantee but recently has been hovering around the quarter-million prize pool mark.  As one of the smaller majors is doesn’t quite get the recognition of a tournament like the $750k but it tends to have a strong field and stacked final table. Yesterday, however, a few relatively unknown players made quite the splash as “Lalapaloolala” and “zuggiolino” battled it out for the title and a $49,416 payday. The crown eventually went to zuggiolino who earned the first five-figure cash of his career on FullTilt while Lalapaloolala had to settle for 2nd and $39,000.
