With FTOPS XVIII in full swing the focus of our weekend tournament report shifts completely onto the world’s #1 online poker site PokerStars.  There was plenty of action on Stars this past weekend as they ran their typical Sunday events including the Warm-Up, Million, $500k, $215 re-buy, and Second Chance. All in all between these five events there was more than $3,000,000 in guarantees on the line and nearly $4,000,000 in prize pools when all was said and done.  PokerStars is by far and away the biggest site when it comes to Sunday majors and along with their SCOOP and WCOOP series have the market cornered in big online tournaments.

The first event of the day, the $750,000 guaranteed Warm-Up, is typically the 2nd biggest event of the week online. With more than 4,600 players participating Sunday the prize pool swelled to more than $920,000 with nearly $150,000 for the winner. The tournaments earlier starting time typically leads to a final table full of players from all over the world.  This week was no exception as  a few Americans were joined by players from Canada, Sweden, Hungary, and Russia.  There were some solid players at the final table including Ted “Traveller99” Sorensen who fell in 8th place for just over $11,000.  Heads-up came down to “bugstud” and “jusepe236” as the two battled it out for a difference of more than $37,000 in prize money. While most events have been ending in chip-chops lately it was nice to see a final table come to a full conclusion as jusepe was able to outlast bugstud for the title and a large $145,712 payday.

PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up $750k Guaranteed
4,644 Entrants; $928,800 prize pool

1. jusepe236 $145,712
2. bugstud $108,205
3. E1ephant $76,626
4. slowmo $52,477
5. nikolai1986 $39,474
6. d-mon-d $30,186
7. Naropa $20,898
8. Traveller99 $11,610
9. marquitos74 $7,340

The Sunday Million continued to run the online poker landscape as once again the week’s biggest event easily surpassed its guarantee. With more than 8,300 players on hand the $200+$15 buy-in event saw its prize pool amass more than $1,668,000 helping it compete with most of the FTOPS Events on Sunday.  The final table came and went in a hurry as a slew of eliminations happened with in just a few hands leaving three players remaining. Once “mi777” was eliminated in 3rd place, “Deadmoney843” and “Sibydom” decided to chop the remaining prize pool and leave $30,000 on the table in a winner-take-all format.  Each player guaranteed themselves over $197,000 but it was Deadmoney843 who took down the additional $30,000 and Sunday Million title. Below are the final table stacks, bust-out hands, and chop-adjusted payouts:

The Sunday500 has finally gained some momentum and stayed on the plus side of its $500,000 guarantee as once again more than 1,000 players ponied up the $500+$30 entry fee. The high-stakes major tends to have one of the smaller fields but with that comes a strong final table full of well known professionals. On hand this weekend were “JBT449”, “doubledave22”, and Luke “Tobia$ Bluth” Nettles.  Nettles was the first to bust at the final table heading out in 9th place for just $5,836.  The high-stakes professional is no stranger to success in this very event having won the 500k just a few weeks ago for $87,400.  Doubledave22 found himself in good shape during three-handed play but was unable to outlast his competitors and earned $50,398 for a hard days work. Much like Nettles he has seen great success online including a win in the Ultimate Bet Online Championship’s Main Event for $279,044 earlier this year.  Rounding out our trio of professionals was eventual winner JBT449 who earned one of the biggest paydays of his career and added another victory to an impressive resume that includes wins in the Super Tuesday, MiniFTOPS, and Nightly $100k on PokerStars.

While the Sunday500 had a solid final table it could not compare to the names reaching the final nine of the $215 re-buy. There were all kinds of well known professionals including last week’s winner Fabrizio “SixthSenSe19” Gonzalez who was looking to repeat as champion. Joining him was FullTilt professional Jon “PearlJammer” Turner, “jus2awsum”, and “Belabacsi”.  All of these players are highly-ranked tournament professionals and gave the railbirds quite a bit of excitement heading into the final table.  Turner and Gonzalez would ultimately find themselves heads-up with more than $10,000 on the line for the winner. While the $35,862 first-place check is a big score for most players it would not even crack the top-10 on either player’s resume. In the end it took a big cooler to finish Turner off in a hand that was a roller coaster of emotions. Both players were more than happy to get all the money in before the flop with big pairs only to see the lead swing on the turn and then again on the river:

The last event of the day on PokerStars was the $250,000 guaranteed Sunday Second Chance which keeps inching closer to the $300,000 prize pool mark. This past weekend more than 1,400 players were on hand looking for one final shot at a big score. Some familiar faces made it all the way to the final table including “$30k” who made our report a few weeks ago for finishing 3rd in the Sunday $215r. This week he would fare much worse as he was only able to muster an 8th place finish for $6,529.  Sixth-place finisher “Bounatirou” has seen a lot of success on PokerStars including over a handful of $20,000+ scores over the past few years.  One of his biggest cashes came earlier this year in the $215r where he won $40,467 for his victory.

Unfortunately there was not a lot of suspense at the Second Chance final table as the last three players decided to chop the remaining $120,000 or so left in the prize pool and went all-in on the very next hand. “Norcalsurfer83” won the pot and had already secured himself the biggest piece of the pie as he took down the title and a nice $41,191 payday.
