Withe FTOPS XVIII coming to an end our Weekend Tournament Report shifts focus solely to PokerStars and their Sunday majors. For updates on all of the biggest events in FTOPS XVIII be sure to check out our poker news section.  Even though FullTilt garnered most of the attention Sunday PokerStars did seem to gain some extra attendance from all of the players participating in FTOPS. Sunday majors were up across the board this weekend as the Warm-Up, Million, $500k, $215r, and Second Chance all saw an increase in number of players and prize pools. Kicking the day off was the Sunday Warm-Up which while it carries a $750,000 guarantee has recently been smashing the $900,000 prize pool mark. Over 4,700 players were on hand for the day’s earliest starting major creating a massive $949,600 prize pool which typically would rate as the day’s 2nd biggest event.

The final table had a few good players including third place finisher “Catenaccio” who had more than a handful of $50,000+ scores to his name including another 3rd place finish in this very event in October 2009 for $78,672.  After Catenaccio busted in 3rd place the heads-up battle came down to “Pinoww” and “kenz085” in a race for the $148,975 first-place prize. Both players were quite experienced in cash games and tournaments including kenz085 who won the $109r and $55r last year for $23,370 and $11,096 respectively.  His final table success ultimately failed to pay off in a big way as Pinowww took down the title after he slowplayed Pocket Kings to perfection:

The only tournament to regularly beat out the Sunday Warm-Up prize pool wise is the PokerStars Sunday Million. Long known as the week’s biggest online event the Million has kicked it into high gear lately with prize pools inching closer to the $2,000,000 mark. The extra attendance is a product of a successful 2010 World Championship of Online Poker, the recent attention given to the World Series of Poker final table, and even FTOPS XVIII bringing in some more players. This week  more than 8,500 of the best players in the world ponied up the $200+$15 creating one of the biggest Sunday Million prize pools of 2010.  With so much money on the line it would have been expected for a final table chip-chop to occur but for once that was not in the cards as “RICOFELIZ” decided to take down the title and more than a quarter million dollars in the process.  Runner-up “musicom” probably regretted not chopping as the difference between 1st and 2nd ended up being nearly $70,000. As it tends to be the final table of the Sunday500 was one of the best of the weekend. A familiar face from the Sunday Warm-Up was on hand as “Catenaccio” scored his 2nd third place finish of the day. The high-stakes professional earned another big score and amassed more than $100,000 in earnings on Sunday with a $55,991 cash in the $500k. A few other recognizable names at the final table included Jon  “apestyles” Van Fleet who busted in 6th place for $23,305.  Widely considered one of the best online MTT players in the world Van Fleet has won a WCOOP title as well as the $215 re-buy on PokerStars. Eventual winner “brianm15” is a cash game player who has been making a name for himself in online tournaments as of late.  His six-figure score this past weekend was the third of his career on PokerStars and his 2nd Sunday major win to go along with a victory in the Warm-Up last year.  Runner-up “clunged” earned the bigger score of his career on Stars after a check-raise semi-bluff on the turn failed to get there against brianm15’s two pair:

While the Sunday500 had a few big names make the final table it paled in comparison to those on hand once the $215 re-buy reached its end. A handful of big names found themselves at the final table of the day’s biggest re-buy event including Steven “PiKappRaider” Burkholder, Jonathan “MONSTER_DONG” Karamalikis,  Jamie “TheCronic420” Rosen, Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul, Kyle “kwob20” Bowker, and “All_in_at420”.  Needless to say there were plenty of fireworks at the $215r final table which ultimately came down to All_in_at420 and Bowker for the title and $33,497 payday.  In the end Bowker was able to outlast a very strong field and earned another big score on a resume that already included more than $1,000,000 in cashes on PokerStars alone. The $33k+ score failed to crack his top-5 cashes which includes a $103,162 win in a Omaha 8b Championship all the way back in 2006. The was actually his 4th victory in the $215r which might just be a record on PokerStars.

The final event of the day on PokerStars actually finished well before the $500k, $215r, and Sunday Million. The $250,000 guaranteed Sunday Second Chance once again easily surpassed its guarantee as more than 1,500 players entered the $200+$15 event. With nearly $315,000 in the middle and $56,628 slotted for the winner the Second Chance lived up to its name as an opportunity for all the grinders to catch a big score late in the day.  Taking full advantage of his second chance was Faraz “The-Toilet 0” Jaka who is no stranger to both live and online success.  The highly aggressive professional found fame away from the internet earlier this year as he dominated an ESPN telecast in a NAPT Bounty Shoot-out. The former WPT player of the year nearly won the Bellagio Cup V last year before falling in second place for $774,780. Online Jaka has won the $1k Monday, Super Tuesday, Second Chance (twice), and the UB Sunday $200k over the past few years. His $56,28 win here rates as one of his best scores on a career that has seen well over $1,000,000 in cashes online.
