The 23rd of June 2013 saw the culmination of two WSOP Events, and the start of two more, including the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Single Draw event, that was bound to be full of big name players. As usual, we’ve brought all the action together for you in this handy daily update.

Event #38

The $2,500 4-Max NLHE Event #38 has a winner in Justin Oliver. He walks away from the 4 handed final table with $309,071 and a lovely gold bracelet. 8 players started the day, but only 4 of them got to enjoy the spotlight under the Mother ship’s glare. A full report of the action will be up later, but this is how the final 8 got paid:

  1. Justin Oliver – $309,071
  2. Nick Schwarmann – $191,434
  3. Jared Jaffee – $129,447

  7. Mike DeGilio – $29,770
  8. Jonathan D’Souza – $29,770

Event #39

Another WSOP bracelet is going over the border into Canada this year, this time courtesy of Daniel Idema. He has just won the $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo 8 or Better Event #39 for $184,590 and that’s his fourth cash in this year’s series. The final table report will be up later, but while we get that ready, here’s how the final table panned out:

  1. Daniel Idema – $184,590
  2. Joseph Hertzog – 114,109
  3. Raul Paez – $71,736
  4. Matt Vengrin – $51,488
  5. Mike Leah – $37,552
  6. Tony Gill – $27,834
  7. Fei Chu – $20,964
  8. Artie Cobb – $16,037
  9. Linda Johnson – $12,459

Event #40

21 players will be making it back for the third day of  the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event #40. 287 started day 2, but the grind separated a lot of players from their chips. players who didn’t make it through the day include Robert Romanello (191st for $2,888), David Sklansky (157th for $3,105) and JC Tran (114th for $3,500). My fellow poker journalist, Frank Op de Woerd also made the money, coming in 132nd for $3,500, proving that poker journalists can play as well as write about the game. Another “celebrity” player in this event is Kara Scott. The Party Poker sponsored TV presenter is sitting in 13th place with 314,000 going into Day 3.

The chip leaders going into Day 3 are:

  1. Nicholas Fierro – 965,000
  2. Matt Berkley – 886,000
  3. Joao Dorneles Neto – 788,000
  4. Richard Dubini – 759,000
  5. Allen Cunningham – 697,000
  6. Griffin Berger – 610,000
  7. David Tran – 534,000
  8. Fred Berger – 523,000
  9. Chad Eveslage – 507,000
  10. Garry Gates – 489,000

The final 21 poker warriors in this event will be back at 13:00pst to play down to a winner.

Event #41

The second day of the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha 6-Max Event #41 saw the 117 remaining players culled like unwanted badgers down to just 22.  With just 42 players paid, we saw the demise of Juha Helppi (36th for $10,960), Daniel Negreanu (34th for $10,960), Freddy Deeb (27th for $12,896) and Shaun Deeb (25th for $12,896). The final session saw most of these eliminations, and also saw Steve gross pick up a lot of chips to go into the chip lead. The other members of the big stack club are:

  1.  Steve Gross – 526,000
  2. Jesse Rockowitz – 476,000
  3. Salman Behbehani – 456,000
  4. Alex Manzano – 450,000
  5. Ville Mattila – 392,000
  6. Yevgeniy Timoshenko – 352,000
  7. Joseph Leung – 348,000
  8. Viacheslav Zhukov – 340,000
  9. Tony Gargano – 291,000
  10. Gary Bolden – 289,000

The play will be starting again at 2pm Las Vegas time, and will be playing down to a winner.

Event #42

The $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Event #42 saw a massive 2,100 players entering the fray, and amazingly only 168 are still there for Day 2. We lost several big names in the melee, including Randy “Nanonoko” Lew, David Vamplew, Antonio Esfandiari, Vanessa Selbst, Jennifer Tilly and Neil Channing. Players who made it into Day 2 had Mikey “Moment_Mori” Petersen (6,575), Allen Kessler (14,800) and Sam Grafton (77,000)amongst their number.

The big stacks starting the second day are:

  1. Matt Matros – 145,000
  2. Jake Balsinger – 129,100
  3. Zenni Petros – 110,800
  4. Niall Farrell – 106,000
  5. Keith Block – 91,700
  6. Dana Buck – 78,200
  7. Sam Grafton – 77,000
  8. Mark Jun – 67,000
  9. Ryan Tepen – 61,800
  10. Gregory Benjamins – 57,000

The players will be returning to the Amazon Room of the Rio to play Day 2 at 1pm, and will be aiming to end up a lot closer to a final nine players.

Event #43

If I was a hack, I’d make a Matrix joke about Calvin Anderson leading the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Draw lowball Event #43 after Day 1. But of course he knows Kung Fu, so I’d be a fool to try it. 87 players entered this event, so it’s not surprising that only 55 are coming back for Day 2, but there is a lot of play still to happen before we crown a winner. Players who started, but couldn’t find the cards to see them into Day 2 included john Juanda, Phil Hellmuth (who busted after going on tilt following a hand against Paul Volpe) and Mike Matusow. Some of the notable players who still have chips going into Day 2 are Erick Lindgren (20,500), Phil Galfond (22,000), Mike Watson (36,000) Phil Ivey (43,100) and Phil Laak (53,900). I was half expecting to see Viktor Blom turn up for this one, but he’s still not made his entry to Las Vegas this year. The holders of the most coloured betting discs going into the second day are:

  1. Calvin Anderson – 134,700
  2. Paul Volpe – 127,000
  3. Tom Schneider – 115,200
  4. Layne Flack – 102,200
  5. Naoya Kihara – 88,200
  6. Matthew Ashton – 82,000
  7. John Hennigan – 72,800
  8. Max Pescatori – 66,000
  9. Ben Parker – 63,000
  10. Ashton Griffin – 59,000

The players will be back in their seats for the second day at 14:00pst, and we expect fireworks before the end of the day.

Player of the Year

The 2013 WSOP Player of the Year race has seen Daniel Negreanu’s cash in Event #41 stretch his lead at the top of the board, but he’s still very catchable by any of the top 10 winning a bracelet. With Negreanu taking a break until the One Drop event, I’m expecting to see him toppled from his lead in the next few days.

  1. Daniel Negreanu – 470.53
  2. Tom Schneider – 438.51
  3. Daniel Kelly – 344.70
  4. Jason Duval – 328.85
  5. Erick Lindgren – 323.51
  6. Mark Radoja – 304.00
  7. Scott Clements – 303.50
  8. Matthew Waxman – 300.00
  9. Benny Chen – 300.00
  10. Matthew Ashton – 289.75

The 24th is a day that is going to see two final tables in the form of Events #40 and #41, as well as continuing action in Events #42 and #43. The only event to start today is going to be the $3,000 NLHE Event #44. as usual, we’ll have the daily roundup covering all the action, and reports from both of the final tables.
