You really would expect the 4th of July to full of fireworks, and the WSOP hasn’t disappointed. We had two final tables, a massive entry to the Little one for one Drop, and all the other action you’d expect from Las Vegas this time of the year.

Event #55

We have a new $50,000 Player Championship winner in Matthew Ashton. The Brit picks up $1,774,089 to go with his bracelet, which came after he beat Don Nguyen in the heads up battle.

Event #56

The $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Event #56 ran into an extra day when the heads up match up between Nikolaus Teichert and Vincent Maglio ran through the time allotted for the event. They came back on Thursday, and Nikolaus Teichert emerged the victor. He takes home $730,756 and a gold bracelet for his troubles. A report of the final table will be up later.

Event #57

31 players entered the Amazon Room of the Rio Casino in Las Vegas to play the penultimate day of the $5,000 No Limit Hold’em Event #57, and only 9 remain to play the final table.

Sam Trickett was the first to go in 31st place for $20,450, with JC Tran going in 20th for $24,872 and Olivier Busquet going in 12th for $46,870.

Matt Perrins leads the race for the title, and the players will be back at the table at 12:45 Friday.

Event 58A

Day 1B of the Little One for one Drop $1,111 Event #58 saw the field grow to 4,756, and the introduction of more notable names, all playing on the Birthday of the USA. Phil Ivey, David Williams Jennifer Tilly, Pius Heinz and Joe Cada all entered (and re-entered) but to no avail, as they are all sitting on the rail. Not to say every well known player has busted, Antonio Esfandiari (53,800), Humberto Brennes (67,775), Victor Ramdin (23,900) and Barry Greenstein (38,000) all made it through the day.

The two flights are combining into a single field on Friday, and will be playing down to a final table planned for Saturday.

Day 2 will kick off on Friday at 1pm.

The $2,500 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball (Limit) Event #59 is giving Daniel Negreanu the chance to regain his lead in the WSOP Player of the year race, as he’s sitting in 8th place from the final 10 players, and it seems Negreanu thinks this is his event:

Player of the Year

It has finally happened, Daniel Negreanu has lost the top spot in the 2013 WSOP Player of the Year race. Matthew Aston’s win in the Event #55 has propelled him into first place, jumping over the entire top 10 list.  Don Nguyen also jumps into 4th after coming in second to Ashton in the same event. With Negreanu going deep in Event #59, Friday may see more changes in the leaderboard.

Friday is going to see a lot of very hungover players in the Amazon Room give Thursday was the 4th of July, a massive holiday in the USA. They’ll have to contend with their headaches while playing the second day of the Little One for One Drop, as well as the final tables of Events #57 and #59. Friday also sees the start of the last two event before the Main event starts, with the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event #60 and the $10,000 PLO Event #61.
