Default First time playing Cash Omaha

Had a little time to spare, so figured i should try PLO.
I am generally not a cash game player, MTT is my thing, but I heard from my friends that Omaha is a good place to get your points/ raked hands/ clear your bonus - figured I have a taste.

    So here I go to 32Red with 4 € to 02/04 table 6 seater.

I left about 20 minutes later with €14.60

    Is it beginner luck?

Something tells me that soon I'll be giving it back .. lol

As far as I'm aware no one wins at plo games over a large sample at that stake due to rake.

Is this true? I was thinking about learning PLO and playing at microstakes there always seems to be fish with big stacks.

Anyone know of any good websites for learning a basic strategy since it's pretty foreign to me atm?

It's definitely true of higher stakes, but I'm unsure if it applies to the lowest stakes. I see no reason why it wouldn't be worse though.

The rake is quite predatory at micro/low-stakes but the games are so easy you can overcome it. However because of this you should be more aggressive in your BR management and take shots at higher levels when the games look good. Unfortunately b/c of the swingy nature of mid-stakes aggressive PLO games this can mean getting knocked on your butt a few times, but it's worth it to get away from the massive rake at $50PLO and below.

    lots of good replies

    when you are learning:

play mid high (say 6789+) cards that are connected/with at least 1 suit, one or two gaps at the bottom is OK in LP. Don't bother with pairs unless they are also connected. Hands like A876 with a nut suit are fine too. People will play and win with many hands that look worse, don't worry about that.

most of the money you lose will be from small sets/boats, non nut straights, flushes. so just don't have those hands.

Once you make top set/FH/5 card nut hand either bet/raise because you have/are drawing to the nuts or fold. occasionally toss in some calls with middle set or worse or multiway with nut draws.

pretend AA is 99 and all other pairs are 88-.

run some of your hands early through

to started getting the equities in your mind.

you might wanna use this: equilab omaha
If things were to magically revert to January 1st, 2003, only I could take everything I know now in terms of poker ability/knowledge, bonus clearing, etc., I think it's safe to say that it would be trivially easy to make over a million dollars.

I've hardly played Omaha but that sounds like the Stud Hi/Low axiom of

"Best hand or draw or get out". Is that it?

I just recently read Jeff Hwang's book and have been giving it a go myself. Mostly been playing PL O8 & a bit of FL O8.
I've got an old retired guy who lives across the street from me who strictly plays Omaha O8 (live & online) which has been helpful too.

I'm finding it interesting having the brain in gear for a change. Kinda fks me up a bit when going back to nlhe donkaments though (I'm finding myself waking up on my desk more often).

My stepdaughter has actually been trying to take up Omaha as well (she took my freak'n Jeff Hwang book from my washroom!). Discussing HH's with her has been helpful too >> trying to teach her the game while just learning it myself gets me thinking even more.

I didn't realize that about the rake in the micros though. So far I've mostly been playing it on Bodonka and so far it's going good but pretty sure it's due to the majority of them being so bad at the game.

I kind of abandoned my Omaha experiment. Maybe I should try to get back to it.
Something that is interesting to learn more about - explore it.

If your trying to get points/clear bonuses then PLO is definitely the easiest way to do that. I haven't had much success playing omaha, you've gotta remember that a decent hand in holdem is almost never good in Omaha. Top pair (or even top two pair) might not be worth calling a river bet.

After about 5000 hands, I've given up on Omaha. I'm still lost in most hands.

My theory is if you can solve Rubik's Cubes quickly, this may be the game for you.

I wonder why Omaha H/L is so "unpopular". It is real hard to find games.
Personally i really like the H/L game way better then the pot limit Omaha.

I like playing Omaha and have been reasonable successful in MTT's. I have dabbled with some low buy in cash games but I am not really a cash player . When I look at my stats I have broke even on the cash tables. For some reason I jus cannot do any real damage at PLO8.

I haven't been playing it as much as I thought I would be. PLO just feels a bit too gambly/swingy & wild for me. I've finally gotten good at not getting bent out of shape playing NLHE donkaments but I can feel the Tilt monster welling up inside of me while playing PLO cash tables.

Still playing a bit of PLO8 but only at the micros. A tiny bit of NL O8 too. We've actually been playing some homegames of it lately at my house & the neighbours. Probably the thing I like about it most is just 'learning'. Jeff Hwang's book is still featured on my bathroom shelf (I like the HH quiz portion in it).
vegasjj, if you're thinking of playing more of it you might want to consider grabbing a copy of that book at your local library. Here at my library I can order up books via inter-library book loan... anything that's published before 2012 (< something like that). I've taken out dozens.
