Adjusting To Live Play

Have been playing on the net for about the last 4 months, and feel like i am just starting to get a feel for what players have, when their going to fold to my bets and so on. However have recently been playing in a couple of live tourneys with 8 or so of my mates, and am finding it completley different. The problem is that a lot of them are not as good as me choosing to play any two cards from any position. i cant seem to put them on hands like i am beginning to develop on the internet, and hence am not making the correct decisions like i should. Will this just come from experience at playing live, and does live play take a bit of adjusting to????

yup.

you have a concept they dont...starting hand selection. therefore, given enough time...you will outperform them. how long? dont know. variance can be wicked rough.

just keep playing. think about what you have seen a certain player do and with what. start taking mental notes...you will be able to read them before long.

I have played online for about 18 months and have logged about 150k hands--not a lot as compared to many in this forum. However, I have also played live once a month in that same time period with my friends. I find that live is easier to make good reads than online because you are generally playing with the same people (home games), the number of tells you can pick up on are enormous and you have so much more time to think about the hand live vs online. Plus, live you have nothing better to do than study hands as they are played since you cannot muti-table. For example, I once told a newbee to my home game what hand he was gonna flip over (JJ) and he almost puked and then he flipped his cards.....yep, JJ. I wasn't even in the hand but since you are captive to one table live, you should make the best use of your time. I would have never been able to make that read online because I multitable and I don't generally pay attention to hands I am not in unless it is a big pot. Another example is when villain went allin on me and I had a str8 but the board was paired. I suspected he might have a boat so I asked him if he liked his hand a lot because I liked mine a lot. He spoke pretty comfortably and joked a little. That told me enough. I folded. Sure enough, he had a boat. And he asked me after the game "How did I know?" Hehe, I didn't tell him.

So, to answer your question...you should be able to adjust your reads to the live game--just be patient. I personally think it's easier than online.

This is very -EV at any home game.

Hehe, very true. Funny thing is that the guy never showed up again! lol.

I also use this to my advantage when I notice certain players playing very nitty against me, esp when I raise. I have to say, however, that most players at my home game still don't care about what I may have and they still call me down with TPWK or MPGK. It's pretty hilarious...
