Default Differences between PL and NL

Hey all, I was wondering what the major differences between PL and NL are. I was reading up on the net somewhere and they were explaining that PL requires more postflop decisions simply because there are limited raises PF than in NL. The article went on to say that people should master NL before trying PL.

I understand that your aces can get screwed in early position in PL and that your pocket pairs can get in cheaper. Beyond that, what more is there that one considers when playing PL? Im really not seeing it as being that much of a difference at my stakes.

How about for those higher stakes you guys play at? Any reason to pick one or the other?

I have played in a few PL tournaments and I can tell you one major difference. There is not as much blind stealing and mid-level pocket pair blasting in the later part of the tournament. The rules of PL prevent the Average Stack, MP player from blasting All-In with pocket 8s. Consequently, from EP and MP that move is not as profitable because you cannot be assured of isolation. It is all fine to blast All-In from EP with pocket 7s in a NL tournament. Everyone may fold to you and if you only get one caller with two overcards, you are on the good end of a coin flip. It is quite another in PL to raise as much as possible from EP with those 7s only to get 3 callers. You are likely looking at getting beat.

So the value of position goes up in PL. In NL, you can bet as much as you want, whenever you want. But in PL, you can typically bet more in later position than you can in early position because any opponents who have previously put money in the pot have added to you maximum bet.

I haven't ever played PL, but I'd imagine that check-raising is a stronger play in PL because it helps you to get more chips in the pot, whereas in NL, you are basically trying to take the pot right there (or get him to call against the odds).

    Would this assumption be correct?
