Looking for advice on a hand

This hand from last night really is driving me nuts. Our local Elks club runs a series of weekly tournies, and last night we had about 85 players. We made it to the first break and I had increased my chip stack from 2000 to around 4500. About half the players are gone, and blinds had just increased to 100/200.

In middle position I'm dealt AJ suited. It's folded around to me and I bet 800. (This table is so tight that everyone looks at me like "who does he think he is" whenever I come in for a raise.) Guy to my left calls. Fold, fold, fold, and we are heads up to the flop.

About the caller: He first played last week, and is so new that we had to explain to him when to put in the blinds, how to deal, when to bet, etc. Nice guy, but a total newbie, which is fine. Last night I had watched him call to the river quite cluelessly with a weak second pair a couple of times. After that though he hit a couple of lucky hands and had actually a few more chips than I did.

The flop came JT7 rainbow. I led out with a bet of 1400 into the pot of just under 2000 with my TPTK. (Too much? Too little?) He calls. I felt good so far.

Turn: 9. I don't like it. In the tourney structure, I'm thinking now I maybe should have checked it to him, but I stayed aggressive and went all in, figuring he would throw down his straight draw. But he called.

The river didn't help me, and I watched helplessly as he turned up his KQ.

I drove home and went to bed wondering how I should have played this differently, or whether I did all I could. Any ideas?

the raise was fine, imo. and if this guy is that new, i like my chances with him HU...knowing he's not probably folding anything based on what you've seen.

flop bet, from me, is full pot. theres a lot up there, and i dont want him to chase anything. if he wants to chase, he is paying full price.

turn, i dont like, either. but i dont shove. KQ is nuts, and any 8 beats you badly, too. he could very well have J8, T8, etc. granted, he may have nothing, but i am not risking my tourney to find out. sounds like you have plenty of chips, and still would have. dont pick your spot here in a connected board with no redraw to the nuts against a calling station. there will be several chances later. if you were short-stacked, you may be justified in fighting here, but not being this deep, imo.

if he bets, i may call, depending on the size of his bet, chip stacks, how much/often he has bet post-flop, etc.

the problem i see with the hand is you are against a call-station with a weakish TP, on a connected board. lots of holdings a call-station will chase with, and you CANNOT BUST HIM OFF A HAND. therefore, against this villain, you dont look to have a lot of fold equity.

check down from the turn on, and hope for the best.

800 is alot to open up for preflop with more limpers. 600 should have been fine. On the flop, a 1/2-3/4 pot bet is good, so around 1000 if you bet 600 preflop, since there would be about 1500 in the pot. When the turn brings a 9, theres 4 to a straight, and against a calling station like you said he is, hes not very likely to fold here, so im probly giving up on this pot and check/folding.
