math question

i got a pot equity question. You guys probably heared this over and over again , i googled it but i always seem to struggle with the same technical math issue.

suppose it's a 100 nl game.

player A opens 3x player B makes it 12x total , player A calls

pot on flop : 25.5 $

player A bets 20 $ and player B shoves for 88$

the way i've always calculated it is as following

bet to call = 68$ ( 88-20)

total pot ( this is my problem ) :

do i need to add the" bet to call" to the " total pot size "or not

if not total pot = 20 + 25.5 + 88 = 133.5

if yes total pot = 20+25.5 + 88 + 68 ( bet to call)=195.5

final calculation in my excell spreadsheet has 2 solutions because i don't know the correct method

the formula to define the pot equity would be "total pot/ bet to call"

solution A) total pot = 133.5/ bet to call =68

result : 33.7% , odds notation : 1.96 to 1

solution B) total pot= 195.5 / bet to call = 68

result : 25.8 % , odds notation : 2.87 to 1

thanks for your time and help. As you can see the difference is pretty big and i feel like a retard but i'm very confused.

I thought of this exact same post. Say what you want about spoon, but he was the king of maths 'round these parts. Form a range, figure your equity. If your equity is more than the odds of calling vs villain's perceived shoving range, then the call is +EV. You can easily do this at the table by using shortcuts and a little practice, although your calculations will be more precise during post-session reviews, ldo.

I already understand how it's used in combination with a tool to asses ranges like pokerstove , my question is purely mathematical. As described in my OP but thanks for the tip and linkage

aha the answer to my question in OP was A aaperently !!! Spoon just used a different formula but with the same result. His formula is actually a bit more complicated and u can do it more directly. by simply calculating it like i did in example A if you don't mind having to deal with an odds notation. ( in my excell spreadsheet it's automatically converted to a % notation).

Well yeah, basically this... spoon's math posts were in depth so all of us monkeys could understand it. Only the smartest of monkeys can figure out there's an easier way.
