I thought of this exact same post. Say what you want about spoon, but he was the king of maths 'round these parts. Form a range, figure your equity. If your equity is more than the odds of calling vs villain's perceived shoving range, then the call is +EV. You can easily do this at the table by using shortcuts and a little practice, although your calculations will be more precise during post-session reviews, ldo.

I already understand how it's used in combination with a tool to asses ranges like pokerstove , my question is purely mathematical. As described in my OP but thanks for the tip and linkage
