Moved to 10nl

I just started 10 nl about 3 sessions ago and so far I am down about 2 BI's. One came from a single hand where I had nut flush and got it all in on turn and villian had a set that rivered a boat. The other buy in was lost to getting 3 bet a ton pre. I think this is the biggest diff. from 5 nl is that people are 3 and 4 betting pre more instead of flatting. Any way I know to tighten up to counter this but my main winning strategy at 5 nl was set mining with small pp. So basically what should i be trying to learn at this point to help expand my game? any thoughts are welcomed. Not sure what your sample size is but people don't 3bet and 4bet a ton @ 10nl. Your table selection must be lacking or you're just running in to people with big hands. It happens. Most 10nl villains aren't 3betting light and they're not shipping pre without the goods.

Post stats and hands, or else you're not going to get much out of this thread.

Don't panic over a little variance when you move up it's just part of the game. Also don't get in the mind set that "Oh My God I have to tighten up now" just play your game and make good decision each and every street as you continually put your opponents on ranges etc.

Defo this. Also, villains aren't gonna pay off your sets as much as at 5nl, so make sure your getting correct implied odds when you do setmine.

Maybe not compared to higher stakes but compared to 5nl the difference is huge, especially if you're moving up for the first time. I was amazed at how much 3betting was going on when I moved up the first time.

@OP, notice that I said the "first time". Don't be afraid to move back down to work on new concepts that you're gonna need to beat 10nl. Work on your steals from the button and the sb. Also start paying attn to villains steal and 3bet stats. Don't be afraid to 4bet from the button against a sb 3bet if his 3bet and steal stats are big. The other option is to leave the table when someone is 3betting you light from the blinds but there's no better time than now to learn how to deal with this. If you're getting it wrong move back down and work on these concepts again.

Like Star said, work on your table selecting. Don't hang around shitty tables.

first congrats on moving up! 2bi's isn't something to get too discouraged about, and this can only be really bad if it affects your mindset and hurts your game. I disagree with just ignoring getting 3b light because regs at 10nl arent 5/3 nits and have some idea of preflop play. Some examples of adjustments you can make when you're feeling like a reg is 3betting u a lot is tighten up your opening range, make your open raise size smaller, possibly 4betting a polarized or wide value range (should have a better idea of how opponent is playing first). There are other things you can do, but these are just some simple adjustments you can think about. Aside from dealing with regs, your money is still coming from retarded fish, and you shouldn't really have a problem if you focus on finding and getting into spots against them.

So much this! People react so poorly to 4bets in spots like these, generally folding too much, other times spewing. Remember, there's more than 1 way to adjust to getting 3-bet frequently.

I don't know how you play but you probably should tighten your ranges at 10NL, at least until you're more comfortable. You'll find agressive tables but they're not all like that. You'll find plenty of passive tables if you continue to play. Try not to play hands out-of-position. If your getting 3bet too much, you might try limp/calling instead of bet/folding your small pairs. That way you'll get to see more flops. Or just switch tables.

Play enough hands at each table to identify any fish. If there aren't any, switch tables.

Moved up recently to 10nl as well and talked alot with people in the irc about responding to getting 3bet. Basically, here is what I took away.

1. When people on your left are 3 betting alot, it is a large incentive to leave the table. You should have a reason to stick around because so many decisions that were + ev become marginal when so much of your range is just going to have to fold.

2. Do not 4 bet without a sample size. I was making the mistake of getting frustrated by my steals getting repeatedly 3 bet and i started 4 betting wide against players who i really did not have the information to do this profitably. This can be a huge leak both because alot of the time you will be 4 betting players with tight calling ranges, and because regs at 10nl, especially those with a propensity for 3betting, are prone to getting involved in dick waving contests and may not give up.

3. Taking notes as to how players react in 3b/4b spots is HUGELY important. It is essential that we do not form habits for reacting based solely on the % someone 3 bets.

agree with penney re 4betting. there may be subtle differences between 5 and 10, but it's essentially the same game with 2x the blinds. work on your value-betting skills, work on your blind stealing/reacting to blind steals, figure out what are good spots to cbet etc and you'll cruise through. fwiw, the better players (and i'm pretty sure the biggest winners) i encountered at 10nl ran like 14/11 at the very loosest. and very rarely did i find a decent player with a 3b% of >3. ie the regs are all very straightforward.

if they raise you they have it like 9 out of 10 times. i find 10nl v nitty compared to 5nl and 25nl
