Right Call???

20 man tourney, down to four blind 50/100 all stacks fairly even. Everyone limps in action on me Flop come 5 6 7. I've got 3 4. Raise 300 next guy calls and raises another 300. Others fold I go all in. He calls with 8 9. Just impossible not to call or what???

Unless the flop is all the same suit there's nothing wrong with getting it all-in there. You don't have the nuts but it's more likely that you are up against an overpair/2 pair/a set/a semi-bluff than the nut str8. Tough luck.

I would tend to agree with DrNoChance here. You can't play scared and the odds here are in your favor that you have the best hand assuming rainbow flop or even 2 to the flush.

Unfortunately, this time the odds beat you. I doubt I'd have played that any differently. Tough luck there.

Take the beat, compliment him on a nice hand. Play it the same way next time.

Yeah, you can't get away from this hand, its just tough luck. I posted a semi-similar situation with me flopping the lower end of a straight, but there were 3 to a suit on the board that I didn't have, and I folded to a huge bet. Much different.

Depending on how well you know your opponent, this is a must call. I however do know some players that I will fold this against.

You know players that wouldn't raise with two pair or a set?

chances are if there are several others in the hand someone is going to be on the draw with the top end

ex: you had 3/4 and the flop was 5/6/7

if there are 3 others in the hand its safe to assume that someone (if they are betting or calling) has an 8....you are screwed with a 9 on the turn or the river...and someone holding a 9 will slam you with an 8 falling

also consider that if anyone with a 8 sees another 4 fall...you are screwed again

point being that even flopping the straight here is risky with the low end if there are 2 or more in the hand with you.

It's risky but long-run profitable; you have to bet big on it. Frankly the bigger the better, because you want them to pay to draw. Even an open-ended straight draw misses more than it hits, which means if you have a made hand, you win better than half the time. I think it's the player's call: either go all-in and make him pay up front to chase, or do something like double the pot, and if the turn doesn't help him then go all in. It sounds like the same thing (except that he gets to see the turn cheaper), but it's also psychological. Some players with an open-ended draw will call an all-in bet thinking they have two cards to hit it. If they miss on the turn and THEN have to call an all-in bet, they might reconsider with only one card remaining. It's a risk either way, just depends on your opponent. Regardless, you have to bet big with a flopped straight; how big is up to you.
