Default Win FREE Coaching With m2m!

    Introduction:
Hi guys, many of you know me or have some idea of who I am. But to those who don't allow me a brief introduction. I joined FTR last year and was playing $2nl in January. I played full ring games while dabbing at 6max on the side throughout the micros and have worked my way up into small stakes. I hit about the 25nl mark or so and came to a bit of a stop in terms of understanding what was going on, so I ended up getting a coach myself and I can't even begin to describe how beneficial it was for my game. I managed to transition smoothly into 100nl last fall and so far the move to 200nl has gone well (although I'm taking a step back for awhile and playing 100nl for numerous subtle reasons). I have turned a $50 bankroll into over $20,000 in profits and I strongly believe that almost anyone can do this as long as they put forth the time and effort.

    So what is this about?:
I've taken plenty out of FTR and now it's time to give something back. I would like to host an 'Essay contest' for those interested in getting free coaching from me. I will guarantee 3 one hour sessions (I'll likely end up going beyond the 1 hour mark so you're really getting an extra hour altogether I imagine). The structure of how I design my sessions will be based on the chosen applicants needs so I won't be posting anything about what it is we'll be doing yet. This essay will be your application for my coaching and should include all relevant information I have stated further below (see ‘Essay Guidelines’).

I came up with a short list of qualifications for those interested. This is fairly loose so don't be afraid to apply if you don't meet a couple of them, although if you’re playing on a 10 buy-in bankroll you can forget it :P

    Basic Qualifications:
    1) must meet my minimum bankroll recommendations
    2) have teamviewer(free) skype(free) and have AIM/MSN/Yahoo or some messenger (you can download all of these and make accounts pretty easily if you happen to not use any)
    3) must not be regularly playing stakes higher than 25nl (failed shots at 50nl would make you a really good candidate though)
    4) must have played a certain number of hands (not really sure what I'm looking for here, but basically would expect you to have a certain amount of playing experience so please include the number of hands you have played in your essay!
    5) willingness to learn, seek out information on your own, be willing to do ‘homework’ I provide (if any)
    6) have an attitude geared towards improving and excelling as a poker player
    7) be active in the forums (I’m not looking for an arbitrary post count but let’s just say this is reserved for those who have joined earlier than just this week)
    8) spend a reasonable amount of time playing/studying poker per week (if you only play 5000 hands a month and spend 2 hours a week reading something poker related my coaching probably isn’t for you)

My coaching may not be for everyone, so I will be taking the application process very seriously - for your benefit. The last thing I want is to take on a student who doesn't need my coaching or won't get enough out of it to make it worthwhile. I mainly play full ring (small samples of 6max games) though I think I've done well enough at the 10nl/25nl levels of 6max (where most of my hands are played) to coach 6max players anyway. My coaching won't be unique for just for one game though. Essentially it will cover alot of theory concepts that are applicable to all situations, whether you're playing 9 handed or 6 handed. Remember, even if you miss a couple of my basic qualifications don't shy away from applying. I may find that you are what I'm looking for based on other information provided so get writing!

Also, if you happen to be playing 10nl or 25nl full ring you probably have a higher chance than someone at 2nl or 5nl. The reason being with little experience, you'll likely get more out of using FTR and reading through the digest/bumped threads and participating alot on the forum than through personal coaching. I feel as though personal coaching needs to have the student meet a certain level before they can really take advantage of it. So don't feel bad if you aren't chosen because there is always plenty you can do to improve your game. Check out the IRC if you have any poker related questions, there's plenty of players in there willing to help you out!

    Essay Guidelines:
Please provide me with the following information so I can be well informed to make my selection: (The more information you provide, the increased chance of your essay being chosen)
-tell me a bit about yourself (student? working? family? interests? goals? etc)
-your poker screen name/site (you can keep this private if you want, just say so in your essay and you can give me this information via PM - I can assure confidentiality in your alias)
    -stakes played
    -hands played at that stake
    -total hands played
-your poker background (how long have you been playing, etc)
    -your bankroll management strategy
-weaknesses/areas you feel you are lost/need improvement
-how many hours a week you play/plan on playing in near future (i.e. once I hit ‘x' stake I will play ‘x' hours)
    -how many tables you play
-what you have been doing to learn/study
-your poker goals (short term is fine, looking specifically at long term goals)
-what do you hope to get out of coaching? (ties in with goals)
-and anything else you can think of

The essay you write will probably be long, but that’s expected. I’ll give you guys a week or so to come up with one and announce a deadline soon. I hope everything here was clear (though I’m not going to lie I typed it up pretty fast). If there’s any questions for me please don’t hesitate to ask, thanks.

    Good luck!

    -m2m

Cliffnotes: 3 free coaching sessions (>60min each) for meeting qualifications + writing exceptional essay. If you skipped to the bottom to read this first, you're likely not the candidate I'm looking for.

i suggest that three sessions talking poker/analysing your gme with someone competent will do wonders for anyone sitting at 10nl or 25nl. M2M is definitely more than merely competent.
    write an essay.

That's awesome you're offering coaching for free. You should get a good reference out of it for future paying coaching gigs.

I've been thinking about getting a coach for NL200, where I've taken shots but haven't really done much in terms of profit. I had a subscription to cardrunners a while back which really helped me get over the micro rut. Anyone struggling at the micros would be well served to do anything they can to grab this opportunity... even though I have no idea who you are

Maybe you should post your *homework assignments* here in the BC... just a thought.

Awesome, awesome opportunity waiting here for anyone who gets it. I received coaching from m2m in turn for a favor. Same kind of deal he's offering here, but I think this will be more personalized towards whoever gets it.

Good luck everyone who applies, you won't regret it.

I'm 14/f/fl and am in the 8th grade. My PokerStars s/n is pedobear96 and I play 5nl 6m. I played 25223 hands of 2nl before progressing to the 5nl level where I have played 5429 hands. I have only been playing for about 2 months. My BR strategy is to play with 25 buy-ins, and I started with a $50 deposit at 2nl. My bankroll is currently $159.42. I need to learn how to make better plays in no-limit hold'em, the cadillac of poker. I play anywhere from 4 hours a week to 16 and a half hours a week depending on how much cheerleading practice I have. I play 4 tables. I watched videos on FTR and read poker strategy articles I find on google. My goal in poker is to make a lot of money and be rich. I hope to learn how to make more money and be better at poker with coaching. I also think spoonitnow is really cute and I want to run away from home so he can adopt me as his daughter.

If you're looking for a coach for small/mid stakes full ring I have a strong recommendation.

    endorse-a-ments:

M2M is baller. his name describes the first 10 months of his poker career. if you play 6m, you should not at all hesitate to take part in this because M will pwn your brain with knowledge either way.

though many of his FTR posts are dedicated to the wonderful phrase "tits or gtfo" ( ), he is a very level-headed, humble, knowledgeable person in the irc, and i can't count on my fingers how many times i've gone in there to find him playing the role of mentee with people like badgers asking about super complex, 4th-level-thinking, merging 5b'ing ranges kinda shit. 'cause he doesn't view poker as a series of standard spots where if they fold when you bluff, then YAY, and if they fold when you value bet, then BOO, but constantly sees everything in terms of all of its theoretical, metagame, statistical, range-i-ful beauty.

i've only done one sweat with him, but it reflected this attitude of his toward poker, when he won a big pot and spent the next ten minutes deliberating over whether he had turned his KK into a bluff on a Q-high flop and gotten AA to fold, and spent another ten minutes talking about how stacking a nit with QQ>AA on a Q-high flop was going to affect his play against him. like, not just his stacking off ranges 'cause he figured villain was fuming, but like friggin opening ranges preflop.

IN SHORT, if you win M as your coach, you won't get some know-it-all who teaches you some cool spots to CiB and can give you some tricks on deciding what type of hand villain has when he donks into you and crap like that, but someone who is willing to doubt himself and is eager to question every spot he's put into, and who is able to do it with a smart, well-studied mind.

IN SHORTER M, will you have my babies?

I'll announce a deadline in a few days. Try to aim to have it complete by the end of the month. I plan on reviewing them during the first week of February as far as I know.

I'd really like to win this. But only just started playing ring games after years of SnG's.

Am I still eligible? I will fulfill the criteria, ie in 3 months time will have the hand history size, averaging maybe 15-20k hands per month, just don't yet.

yup that's fine. the required experience is basically just so I don't end up spending 3 hours trying to explain hand rankings and pot odds

Who am I? I am the walrus. But, really, I am a mid twenties unemployed guy with a college degree living in the states. I have been playing poker for over a decade, started in high school after watching rounders, way before the official craze. I started keeping track of my profit and loss in gambling long before I knew what I was doing and I have yet to have a single down year. Well, I had one, I lost 85 cents and I have never been the same after that.

Part of my new year resolution was to get a new hobby and decided to play some poker and this time found it very interesting was able to progress with the help of a lot of reading and spoonitnow. I deposited 100 bucks and played 1 cent/ 2 cent on stars until I made it to 150 took 8k hands. Made 100 at 5nl after 20k hands and currently I have 17k hands at 10nl and @ 2ptbb/100. I am learning and reading a lot and I feel like my game keeps getting better and most importantly I am enjoying the mental challenge.

My bankroll strategy is a little odd. Since I was really over bankrolled for 2nl I have been able to move up quicker. My plan is to move up to 25 once I hit 500 or 20 buyins, then move up to 50 NL when I hit 1,000. And then start increasing my bankroll requirements to 25 buyins and 30 buyins if/when I move past that stage. Every time I move up, I plan to drop down if I have lose 8 buyins, also if this happens I suspect I would increase my min move up requirement to 25, but I plan on dealing with that when I get there.

Lastly, for me to consider poker as a way of life I would need to earn 100k+, in other words poker is a mental challenge that has levels and I want to see how far I can take it. The money aspect will not motivate me for a long time, but it is nice. I want coaching because I am voracious consumer of information and I found the aim chats with spoonitnow to be incredible useful and I cannot begin to image how much skyp/vent type coaching and “sweatsession could get me. I am at level 3 (10nl) I want to see how high I can go, I suspect that I can reach the 100nl and beyond. But mainly I want to learn how to put random people on ranges. I want to develop and intrinsic feel for equities and how to mess people up in position. I would love to get better at hand reading and maybe in a month I will try to play live at local charity poker events. But, I am not sure how to go about having a proper bank roll strategy for that. My poker name is private, but I can send it to you via pm.

I am unemployed so my days consist of searching for jobs (fyi finding what collar jobs is rough in this economy) that takes about 2-5 hours a day and the rest of the day I devote to working out and having fun. In another words I tend to spend close to 5 hours + on poker and I try to play a min of 1k hands a day.

Lastly, I loath formal writing, yet I wrote this and ironically I used to write reports for a living.

P.S. I love long walks on the beach and puppies.

    Hi M2M,

I am very interested in the coaching you are offering and feel as though I meet the criteria you suggested for applicants quite well. My name is Erik and I am a 21 year old student enrolled in my final semester of a 4 year Honors Business Administration program at the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario. I entered the program hoping to become an Investment Banker but have since lost interest. Through my 4 years in school I have poured about $40,000 into my tuition out of my own pocket with the rest of coming from parental support. I currently have a line of credit with about $6,000 on it with the other $34,000 paid for through various jobs and stock market investments. When I leave University nothing seems more appealing to me then playing poker all day everyday and in December 2009 I set a personal goal for myself to see if I could make a $100 deposit (which I vowed to be my last ever if I did not succeed) into $7,000 by the time I graduate from school in order to do so debt free. If I succeed and feel confident with my skill level I will hold off on getting a job and see where I can go with poker.

I started playing poker when I was 16, playing $5 tourneys with friends. When I was 17 I convinced my Mom to put $50 on Partypoker for me. I remember talking to my dad after my first session where I lost my 40bb stack playing 25NL and wondering how the heck I could ever fold AJ on an A high flop. I dropped that $50 down to a final $5 minimum buy-in at 25NL (the minimum stakes offered then). I remember going all in with QQ pre and doubling up. From there I turned that $5 into over $5,000 through a ton of luck and probably very poor competition. I remember at one point playing 1000NL with a $1,500 roll and $400 stacks; basically I had no clue what I was doing. Anyways the run good eventually ended and I dropped around $1,000 and “quit”. In the next two years or so I slowly but surely blew through that entire sum of money one small deposit at a time. From there I didn’t play poker for a while but then at some point around a year ago I stumbled upon FTR and started reading about Bankroll Management, a concept I had never heard of. I decided I would deposit $200 and play 10NL. I dropped 3 buy-ins over about 5,000 hands and tilted; I brought my roll to a 200NL table and quickly lost it. This was the end of poker for another 10 months or so for me. Then came along November this year. Recruiters were all over my school and I had the tough “what the hell am I doing with my life?” decision and really couldn’t think of much I wanted to do other than move to British Columbia and be a snowboard/mountain bike bum. Then I remembered poker and how much I loved it. I decided without giving it a fair shot, controlling my emotions, and learning everything I possibly could, I could not fully quit. And I needed to fully quit to move on and figure out everything else. Since then I have read No Limit Hold’em Theory and Practice twice and understand all the concepts, I have also spent countless hours reading articles on FTR, 2plus2 and pretty much being obsessed with reading every hand posted on FTR and generating my own opinion (but not posting on hands I feel are above my head).

As far as my results are concerned my roll has gone from $100 to $1750 currently, with a peak of just over $2,000 (including bonuses). My screen names are head_felt on Pokerstars and headfelt on iPoker. At 20NL on iPoker I have made $221.08 in 6,616 hands and on Pokerstars at 25NL I have made $826.45 in 29,173 hands. Between the two sites I am down about $350 at 50NL in around 17,000 hands and am finding it quite a bit more difficult then 25NL; although my all-in expected value is around +$50 (running 8 buy-ins below). Currently I plan on playing 20NL on iPoker for a bit while I work on some things but have no problem taking a shot at 50NL at any time when my bankroll is above $1,500. At $3,500 I want to take a shot at $100nl but it all depends on how I feel I am playing. I currently am very comfortable playing 6-7 tables on my 13inch laptop and have a 24inch monitor ready to go when I log long sessions or if I want to try more tables later on. I play poker as much as I possibly can but try to achieve good grades in case this thing doesn’t work out. Last weekend I played for 35 hours between Friday, Saturday and Sunday but this weekend I likely won’t be able to play at all. Overall in the last 7 weeks I have played about 160 hours so you can get an idea of how often I get to log-on.

I do not have exact goals in terms of what I hope to get out of your coaching. The thing I love about poker is that there is always so much more to learn. Until Kmind mentioned it a few weeks ago I had never even considered 3-betting light, learning a few tips in this area just brought me one step closer to understanding what is happening at the table around me. Then I started learning about squeezing and each of these concepts opens up a brand new dimension to the game. As I begin to understand opponent’s moves and recognize the good players I continually am shocked with how much more I have to learn. It seems like daily I learn something that I do as standard is retarded and there is so much area for improvement. I cannot recognize all these things alone, even by reading every article in existence, so I feel like it would be a great opportunity for me to see what you think of my game. I am sure, especially after reading many of your posts on FTR, that with a little bit of coaching you could offer me insight that will improve my game and my learning exponentially.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Just want to say spoon. Carry on.

M2M whoever you choose just know you're doing something extremely nice. Good luck, hope to hear all about the sessions/progress/etc.

I'm 26 years old and I have been around poker since I was about five years old. My father would play 7 card stud wild with my uncles all the time. I have a degree in business administration but right now I'm an under-employed EMT working as an overnight valet parking attendant. I plan on going to paramedic school in the fall.

I play mostly on Pokerstars. My screen name on there is "Y zorrito Y" and once in a while I'll play on FullTilt where my screen name is "xX zorrito Xx"

I've played full ring 2NL, 5NL, and 10NL and won consistently. I have tried 25NL for about 1000 hands before and I've failed in the past and this is where I think my problem is. Total I've played about 300K hands at these levels. I've had to cash out a few times due to financial emergencies hence why I've been stuck down here. It wasn't too long ago where I deposited $50 and started to build up again. This time around, I manageed to beat 2NL in 5K hands and just started playing 5NL with a bank roll of $110.

    http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...se-t81145.html

Above is a link to my old stats before I had to withdraw.

My bankroll strategy is initial $50NL for 2NL then at $110 move to 5NL and then at $300 move to 10NL... I probably wouldn't feel to comfortable playing only 25NL until I have $1K but I will probably start doing 1 table of 25NL $750 while I have 2 or 3 other tables of 10NL. I figure as the stakes get higher I need a bigger cushion since the edge is potentially smaller.

My weaknesses at this point is extracting value from the stone cold nuts. Value betting. Knowing when to not be aggressive and be more passive. I've always played with the mentality of either raise or fold and while it might be working for me at micros, I've seen it's not going to cut it at 25NL and this is where I need more help with. Also a lot of times I find myself calling out there exact hands and they're beating me but I call for a showdown anyway just to see it and 90% of the time I'm right. I need to learn to trust me insticts and fold even if I'm getting 5:1 on a call.

As of right now I will not play more than 4 tables at a time. I used to play as many as 20 tables at once but I have stopped doing that as I was playing like a complete nit and losing out on a lot of money.

As far is learning/studying I normally study my own hands. I've read Small Stakes Poker, Theory of Poker, and Psychology of Poker of which I only found Theory of Poker to be useful. I've also picked up tips and stategies from FTR but mostly I have learned from my own experiences playing online poker and watching what winning players do.

When I get my tax return I plan on purchasing a laptop computer so I can player online poker while I'm at work since most of the night I'm not doing anything. With this in mind I will be playing at a minimum of about 30 hours of poker per week while I'm at work and of course the time I play on my days off.

My goal is to 4-table 200NL and win consistently. I don't think I would be comfortable "gambling" with any more money than that no matter how large my bankroll gets. If I don't feel comfortable putting the money in there then I'll be playing with scared money and it would just be a waste.

What I'd like to get from coaching is learning how to beat 25NL as from what I can see it's entirely different from 10NL and lower. I'd like to learn to exploit different kind of players instead of just the morons at micros. I'd like to be able to use more statistics in my PT3 and learn more about what they mean and how I can improve them.

    Ah bollocks!

If I was you I'd pick one of these guys over me and I think eragotte is the most likely candidate, screw the essay, I'm gonna play poker.

I thought about the essay, planned a rough draft in my head, but his is better than mine and I'm too damn tired to make shit up.

    Hi, I'm Dan!

    I suck at poker!

I spend too much time reading articles about strategy that has no relevance at the level I play at, but I find it really interesting to see logic and math applied to strategic situations and poker is the perfect example of that. So rather than analysing my game or actually playing more, I waste my time reading stuff that is some what useless at this time.

I'm pretty good at low level SnG's, but I got bored of them. I'm now trying to learn to win at ring games. I'm pretty sure I'll be kicking ass by this time next year, because there's so much good content on this site and friggin awesome info and feedback in this forum, that if you're smart, work hard and listen to people, you're gonna beat the micros without too much trouble. I was shit at SnGs before I came here, and I learnt to beat them with help from this site, so I'm sure I'll do the same with ring games.

I don't need the free coaching, I'll get there in the end either way, but I'd sure like it, 'cos you're way better than I am and it will get me there so much quicker, and I would really enjoy having someone who really knows what they're doing analysing my play and helping me with the many, many things I suck at. So feel free to pick me, it's my birthday in two weeks and it would be a great present.

I've had a few sent to my email that you guys can't see.

Gonna announce a deadline: Your essay must be sent to my email ([email protected]) or posted ITT by the 31st. I'll be going over everything starting Feb 1st so they have to be in by then (will be doing this like 1pm eastern so if anyone is late thats about as much extra time as I'll give (Feb 1st 1:00pm EST).

JKDS, microbonks aren't of the smart variety. They thought they could click a link and get ZOMG FREE COACHING. They are clearly put off by the fact that they would have to write an essay.
  54. #54
I've got 7 essays so far, pretty good turnout imo.

Essay?? Way too much effort imo. I think I'll just keep donking off my roll bit by bit and pretending I know sumfink about pokah.

I'm sitting this one out. After reading the other essays posted here I think you've got some really good candidates, and I'm gonna be busy with summer school over the next few weeks, so I would feel unfair if I entered, somehow ended up winning, and then wasn't able to put in the same amount as these guys.

That said, I like the idea of the essay, so I'll probably write one up and chuck it in my op sometime over the next week or two

Good luck to all, and props to m2m for doing this in the first place!

Generous offer, m2m. Due to hectic work schedule and other activities I am involved with, I do not currently have the time I would need to be 100% dedicated to this. Also, I feel I still have a lot to learn from books and forums before I will benefit to the maximum from coaching. Others will fit the criteria better and it will be a more positive experience for you and them. Hope you do it again in the future and I will then be ready to apply!

    Arg, just woke up.

haha, life as a poker player..

Anyway, I will no longer be accepting any more entries. I'm going to look them all over and take a couple days or so before I make my final decision. I should have my pick by the end of the week and will announce it in this thread I guess.

Thanks for the participation everyone, I wish I could afford to pick you all.

Congrats iLuck. Good choice. I think it was loving long walks on the beach and puppies comment that won it for him.

Even though I didn't win, my bribe offer still stands

Let me know if you are ever in the area.
