Ant's Poker Journey(make 25k by Jan 1st 2010).

Being a member of FTR for almost a year now, i thought it might be time for me to create my own Blog/operation. This blog will contain HH's with some pokery questions and pretty much all of my thoughts about ...everything. Alrighty, here goes....


Me and My Poker Story

My names Anthony(ant) and im from Brisbane, AUS. Im 19 years old, Im a keen musician, and one of the reasons i started playing poker was to save up for new gear(Axe and new Amplifier).
Im currently working part time (2 days a week Lool) so i have lots of time to grind. Most of you will frown upon this but....i dont really have a life plan atm. I dont goto uni/college and i don't intend too. The thought of Uni assesment and presentations e.t.c jst scares the crap outta me...If i did have a plan, i spose it would be to take life as easy as possible, and pretty much just have as much fun with my friends and life as i can. Sounds cheesy but meh. Bit of a teenagers way of thinkin eh.

Alot of you don't know me, actually..none of you know me. I dont post very often, but im on here pretty much everday, reading/studying. I feel my posts would do more harm then good, specially for the beginners. So i tend to jst browse rather then write stuff.

Poker:
As for poker, i started playing about august last year when me and my mates decided to have a home game one night. I fell in love with it from there and started playing freerolls at my local pubs. From there i discovered online and thought i could make some INSTA CAshhh by depositing 50 bucks and owning the noobs. I soon figured out how complex this game really is. I think u know how that went.lool.

So yeah about june this year i started grinding properly, starting at 10nl, then gradually getting to 100nl by this october. I recently just withdrew most of my roll to buy a new guitar and amp e.t.c so atm ive got roughly $1000.

Although i've made some cash over the last few months, i still really feel that im not understanding things properly. I really consider myself a very average player at the moment. There are alot of theoretical concepts that i dont understand. I think that i have a decent understanding of the practical side of things, and thats how i've managed to grind a roll. But yeh...still lots of areas in my game that need improvement.

I suppose this is my main reason for this Bloggy thing. I want to be 10x better then i am. So starting at 25nl with 1000, im gonna regrind and repeat the process, making sure i fully understand the basics before i get too the midstakes.


Goals

Get to 5k by February

1.get to 1500(50nl)
2. grind some more
3 = 5 k

An ambitious goal considering i've only got 3 and a half months....but we'll see how it goes. Ill post some other stuff on here soonish, but for now, its bed time. Feel free to ask any questions about...anything.

this is interesting. You should post. If you get things wrong, it will be pointed out and the discussion on why x is good or bad is of more value than simply being told to "bet harder preflop". This will also help you - pointing out where you may be going wrong. If you're right (and this is more likely I think), then it helps everybody.

Hmm, if I knew you were withdrawing a large part of your roll I'd have probably suggested sticking where you were a bit longer before switching sites. Its going to be tough clearning welcome bonus at 25nl. Hopefully you'll move back up quickly.

Ahh jeez. Im sucha lazy bastard when it comes to posting stuff.
Its been about 2 weeks or so since i created this Operation and i haven't really written anything in it. But i've got a free nite tonight so im gonna give u guys a brief update of my progress so far

Okay, so i wanted to deposit 1000 into PS, but since the AUS dollar dropped, i only got like 600USD into the acct. Which kinda stuffed things up for me. I really didnt feel comfortable playing with such a small roll. But there was nothing i could really do about it...so i got to work(grindin) starting with 600.


Are u running bad when all of ur good hands dont get looked up, and al ur bluffs get floated/called down? Well this had been happening for at least the past 2 months, and was part of the reason for me withdrawing my roll in the first place..i kinda neeeded a break.

So i started grinding 25nl, long story short, i broke even over 8 kish hands(about a week), and it was beginning to effect me. I really started to get pissed off. Pissed that i could run so bad, and not make money when there were so many bad players donating. I took a days break, came back fresh and opened up 1 50nl table. It really helped my focus and i actually ran pretty good, finally scoring a win.

So the last week or so ive been 3 tabling 50 nl underrolled and have been going pretty well. I made 700~ last week.....so i guess i can safely say my bad run is over.

BR is currently at $1350~

Pretty good day today. Put in 1000~ hands and am up another 2+bis for the day. I'm happy, but not overly happy with the way i played in some places, there are some spots that i'm still spewing in... that im pretty sure were'nt +ev. Mainly small pots, double barreling in bad places against some unknown players. I really have to start making reads and getting info about players b4 i start being uber aggro/spewing into them.

Hrmm. Havent updated in aggggges. Long Story short...ran gay in november....and ran okay in ddecember and after alotta grinding at 50nl..im at $2550~.

I took a shot at 100nl when i hit 2k but in my first sesh i got stacked twice due to some dodgy coolers and beats...that sucked hard. Any way...i stepped back down to 50nl and regrinded to about 2.5 and am playing 100nl for good now...hopefully.


I feel like i'm getting owned at 100nl. I cant win any smallish- medium pots...and the regs seem to own my soul alot...maybe i jst run bad but i dunno. Ill analyse properly at the end of the month i spose.

The reason websites have hand history converters is so people can post previous hands, and get good feedback on them to IMPROVE their game. NOT to post a hand that you won on a micro stakes table like you just called down for $170,000 with ace high lol. And i'm not saying i'm the best player in the world, but maybe if you posted hand histories for the correct reasons you wouldn't be grinding $0.25 tables. PEACE.

Im so slack with this blog thing. Its been what like... 2 months and i haven't even thought about it. Any way, im gonna give you a brief summary of whats happened the last 2 months of my poker/normal life.


Ok january.

January sucked, I put in about 25 hands and made $-200 something. Ill post a graph. I took my very first shots at 100nl(on ps) and had the swingiest sessions of my life. it happened every day for just over a weeks....up 2 bi's, down 2, up 2 down 2 etc. Yeah it sucked and it led to some uber tilt and spewy plays.
So i moved back down to 50nl and broke even there for a while, and thats all i really remember. I i took a week off during january cause my sis was down from cairns, and staying in brisbane for a week..so i hung with her. That was really good for me. Its good to just get poker out of ur mind totally for a bit. Really renews ur mental strength/mind and declogs the brain. If u get wat i mean.

When i moved up to 100nl in Jan...i was trying way to hard to 'lag' it up I think. PLaying something like 24/19...which isnt really laggy, but adding those extra couple % of hands in an instant really wasnt a good idea. I was opening all offsuit sc's gappers and suited high cards from LP and cbetting just about every board no matter the vill, which lead to me losing alot more pots then normal(getting c/r more, getting floated etc). Which in turn lead to me tilting easier.


These are the swings i was talking about. (and does anyone know how to get that little box of results in the corner with ur screen name/money won/days played etc.?)

Okay february.



MAn february was fun. I withdrew 500 outta the roll($800AUD) for a mini adventure/holiday me and my mate had decided to go on. The basic jizz was, that he had a couple of Gigs in Melbourne so we thought, why not turn it into an awesome poker/holiday trip at the same time.I'd heard awesome things about the Crown Casino in Melbourne and was phyched that i was finnaly gonna get to see the place.

Anyway after a bit of organising we book our flights and we were off. The First day we got there OMG...i dont usually say omg but Fuck....it was the hottest day of my fricken life. We got there on 'Black saturday'(feb7th)and it was 47 degreess!!!!! The air was just about melting my eyeballs.Every bench and handrail was sizzling and the wind was at least 100km/h. We had to spend a few hours walking around in it looking for our Backpackers
hostel. The backpackers places btw are awesome....if ever i travel the world im def staying at a backpackers....people from all over the world..gathered at one place. Really cool places imo. We met a few chicky babes there ..yeeeeeee.

Anyway...the casino....the crown casino is reallly awesome. Its got everything and its massssive! Its got a cinema,a big ass arcade witha bowling alley and lazer skirmish thing, tonnes of bars and restaurants..a food court..and most importantly a very cool Poker floor. Here in brisbane..we have the treasury casino..its ok but...mmmm the crown is just.......it gives me a mental orgasm jst walking through the doors. Anyway I only got to play twice...and ended down about -300 or so. But overall a really fun time
in melb.

Got back around mid feb..and began to grind again with a roll of about 2000 after the withdrawl. Heres the graph of FEB. My best month to date. I also had my best session ever in Feb too...making 390 at 50nl...i make that almost 8 buyins in one sesh...sick.

Okay. Not that anyone cares, but...I've completed my short term goal of 5k after running super hot on sun mon tues and weds!!! PT3 says Somethink like 15ptbb/100 over 5k hands at 100nl weeeeeeee. I'm a few days late, as my original target date for 5k was February but OH well.


My next goal is to make $25,000 by 1st Jan 2010. (including current earnings of this year so far)

I think this can be done as long as i keep playing at least 5k hands per week. Thats $25k USD aswell which hopefully will convert to around $35k ~ AUD.

I really don't know what i'd do with the money, the money isn't so important to me, i mean sure it'll help me live a cool maxy relaxy lifestyle....but It's more important for myself that i set out and complete the goals that i initally set for myself when i started playing. That goal was to......simply get really really good at this game, i know it sounds kind of cheesy, but i wanna be great, like owning 25/50 great.

I have a tonne of time and a good work ethic and i think if i'm still playing in 3 years from now, i might just make it. Of course right now.... i'm pretty sucky i think. I don't think i really have an 'edge' so to speak....i make some money playing poker atm simply cause i have discipline. I stick to my stop loss of 2 buyins and i never play when i don't feel like it, i do all the things that your supposed to..and that alot of ftrs' seem to be really bad at. That's all i do. If i could combine this with some decent poker skillz......i'd be owning.

Anyway, im gonna go play some CoD:5 and kill some zombies. Out

Hmmm. Life is pretty good atm, pretty much stress free and really easy, i like it. I'm working only 2 days a week (thurs and fri) for like 13hours. This pays me roughly $250p/w~. I have minimal living expenses because i live with my dad and he charges $30p/w for board and i only have one other bill besides this....which is internet($50 per month). So i pretty much have 5 days of spare time to have beers and play ping pong with mates, to play poker or anything i want and can afford it all on a $250~ pw income. Sounds pretty cruizy imo.

BUT....things may be changing soon. I may be moving, moving in with my friends and living totally independently..like a real adult. Rent will be expensive, food will cost and bills will add up. I'm afraid that doing this may put intense strain on my BR as i will prolly have to dip into it for living expenses and as a result .... will slow down my progress as a player. Hmmmmm wat to do. I know i'll have to grow up and move out of home eventually but i don't know if it's the wisest thing to do it so soon. I mean, I'll practically be playing for a living and I don't think im ready for it. That or get some kinda real job.....hah, which i really don't want to do just now. Not until I'm old anyway. Hmmmm

I'm really starting to get settled in at 100nl now. It Always takes me around 10k hands to settle down at a new limit and i've played around 30k~ now so im feeling pretty comfy. When i get to about 40BIS for 200nl i may think about moving up.....but i don't want to get ahead of myself. 200nl is a really big step for me. It's like ...massive. When i started playing 10nl last year, the midstakes just seemed so far away/distant and to make it would just be unbelievable, and now...im so close. Even though its like the bottom end of the mids, it's still a big deal to me. I should probably stop talking it up so much..since i still have a fair way to go, and i don't want myself thinking that the opps there are soo much better or i'll probably try and outplay them every second hand...lolz.

Anyway, i did something pretty lame yesterday. My goal for the week was to get above 6 k and everytime i got close, i put a tonne of pressure on myself to get above that number.....and i dropped a few buyins and would have to regrind. So...yesterday after i'd closed all my tables down and reviewed the days work.... i discovered i'd made 5 bis and fell jussssst short of 6k.....like $1.50 short. So i opened up one table and stole 2 blinds lolzzz. I really have to stop putting so much emphasis on the amount of money i have in my cashier. I wish i could just forget about the numbers and the results...but i think only time and experience will teach me this.

I bought 'The poker mindset by Matthew Hilger' with some fpps the other day. I'm hoping it's a good read and that it will actually improve my game. I'll probably drop a few bis tonight and drop below 6 ....but who cares, it's just a number...a fricken number.

AK hand I like B/F turn then checking behind river (ace or no ace).
Once you check behind that horrid turn card, my assumption is your trying to get to a cheap showdown so that ace on the river should not change anything, unless you think his terribad player and will call you with worse two pairs on that wet wet board.

AK hand you need to put him on a range then check river behind, bet-fold why? he's not calling with worse

So march was a pretty decent month for me, was my first month playing only 100nl 6max, and i put in the most amt of hands ever.
Was my swingiest month ever but I'm learning to deal with it alot better these days, I'm beginning to learn how to focus on my game rather than the size of my BR which is great.

This month i want to get in 40k hands and really just focus on playing my ' A ' game. Marshall28 recently offered me coaching last week which is really great. I accepted his offer immediately and hopefully he'll be able to boost my game to the next level.
400nl Is where i wanna be playing by the end of the year and if i wanna beat it, it's gooing to take alot of work..and alot of coaching.

Umm yeah, poker is going really good atm. Getting coached by Marshall as i mentioned earlier in the blog and some other threads.... and yeah It's going really well. I've completely changed my game for the better and i seem to be reaping the rewards.

2 weeks ago....i went to bed one night and i could harddddly sleep. And it was because i jussssst couldnt wait to play poker in the morning, it was almost like waking up on Xmas morning, I havent felt like that since i first started playing a couple of years ago, this to me is HUGE. I ended up losing that day....but i still enhoyed analysing the hands. I'm really enjoying the game atm, not because im winning, but because im really improving and thinking so much more about the game...yeah..its really fun.

What was the reason for going with Marshall?

I've actually been considering him as an option for when I get coaching. I kind of think rather than someone who can help me do what I do ok better, I'd be better off with someone who can help me with what I dont do...well at all.

Hmmm. So i took a shot at 1/2 the other day, it was was pretty fun. Except i played like a total retard and bluffed away alot of stacks and ended up tilting myself. I played a totally different game to the game i developed at 100nl, the amt of money i was playing with was affecting my decisions, i wasnt thinking at all.... and when i dont think i make the dumbest plays/bluffs and dont put my ops on ranges and confuse the fk outta myself.

Gonna take another shot when my BR gets above 40 bis again.

hmmm. It's a deal. Although i thought i read in Bode's thread that it was first to make $10k profit or something, im a bit confused. Would be good to get the details down and confirmed.

So im rolled for 1/2 again, have got around 45 buyins for it...still kinda scared though. 200 bucks is what i earn at my part time job/week, and i'm going to be gambling with around 1k every session i play, strange. I guess its something i need to get used to..money desensitization is definitely something i need to work on.

Haven't been playing much this month...cause, believe it or not.....I met a girl! Hooray for me. Had one of the coolest weekends ever last weekend, and to top it off... i made money at pokerz. mmmmmmm. Neway, i don't think neone wants to hear nemore about my personal life.

Back to pokerz....100nl 6m has been going pretty well and i feel i've improvedddd Sooo much over the last 3 months. I'm pleased to say..that i can finally beat 100nl and am very confident i can win there over a large sample and at a decent rate. But that's not exactly what i want to do, i'm playing poker to prove to myself that i can get exceptionally good and mix it with some of the best players out there, not to grind for hours on end for fpp's and supernova status and a few grand a month. I have a loooonngg way to go before i'll ever be satisfied with my overall skill in this crazy game, i guess i just have to take it one step at a time i suppose...and that next step is 200nl 6m..wish me luck!
