i agree about IRC. there are some cool people who i have (and will) always like talking to, but it has a very different dynamic compared to what it used to have.

I used to go to IRC all the time for reasons stated above...Then I started to notice that it wasn't helping my game like it did in the beginning. I wasn't able to focus on my tables as much as I could/should have, and I was telling bad beat stories occasionally (we all know how helpful that is). I haven't been to IRC in many, many months.

I ventured into the IRC room about 6 months ago hoping to learn and improve my game from the veterans of FTR. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It seemed like any other chat room. Now and then I'd notice a few bad beat stories, hear about the progress of someone's bankroll, what bonuses people were taking advantage of, and other poker related miscelany.. but nothing that I found helpful. It's a pity that I could never see how it "used to be".

Exactly what I was getting at. I still go into IRC and clown around with some people. Once I get some tables opened up though I inevitably leave. I find IRC to be too much of a distraction to have open and play good poker at the same time.

I think that we are, to some extent, a product of our environment. If you're continually around people that whine, tell bad beat stories, etc. it's easy to fall into the trap and do it yourself. I see people in IRC all the time that are playing (often multi-tabling) and trying to carry on a conversation about God knows what. Doing that doesn't put you in the right mindset to play the best poker you're capable of. There are several regulars in IRC that have been playing poker a long time yet still remain basically break-even players or are only marginal winners. While other people are progressing and moving up in limits, they on the other hand seem to be content with their stagnancy. It's long past due for these people to become more serious and step-up their game.

The other problem I have is that when a new member comes to FTR and begins to learn about our community, they eventually become curious about IRC. They have this idea that IRC is a place where there is active dialogue about poker strategy and become eager to participate. Poker strategy and other important issues are discussed, but in my observation it happens rarely and you have to sort through line after line of drivle to find it. That is NOT the type of place a player wanting to work on their game needs to go, yet they don't know better.

I logged on to the IRC thing but nothing productive seems to be taking place there. Would it not be a good idea to place some people there to monitor all what goes on every couple of hours? I enjoy this forum, but it would be nicer to be able to discuss stuff as it happens (while i play). That would be very convinient

The forum is probably your best bet for good content. During the weekdays especially there are usually lots of people around to share their thoughts and ideas with you as you've already seen...

Best place for instant advice and discussion is ventrilo. IRC is a waste. With that being said I'm going to log into IRC for the first time in awhile.

BTW where are we on that persocet?

Imagine you’re playing $50NL and limp in on the button with JhQh. A player has limped in before you and the BB checks making it three people to see the flop. The flop come Ah,Kc,4d and you all check.

You limp in from LP with 4s,4c in a $100 NL game. There is a limper ahead of you, the SB completes and the BB checks so there are 4 of your seeing the flop. The flop comes 5h,5s,7c and everyone checks.

I bet the flop on both these hands. Why wait for the turn? especially on the second hand. Very few hands have you beat here. Take it down quick-like, don't give free cards.

Also, why on earth were you open-limping on CO with QJ. Any particular reason? me not likey open-limping esp. in LP, me raise!
