Evolution Of A Nit

    Default Evolution Of A Nit

    What the hell is this guy doing starting a second operation already. Well in hindsight some of the reasons for the initial operation are not relevant to me anymore and I want to start fresh with a completely different mindset to improving my game. Many other posters have also started new operations this year which I will be following.

    This operation is going to be about me trying to evolve my game from my current nitty 6Max game. Currently running 14/11 at 100NL 6Max with a winrate of 2ptbb/100. If this continues then fine but I feel loosening up in the correct spots will hopefully increase my winrate. I am almost rolled with 30BI for 200NL but I want to play several thousand more hands at 100NL before taking more regular shots. I am not setting myself any hard and fast targets apart from being proactive in improving my game. Over last few months FTR has been invaluable in giving me a good start in my poker journey. 2008 at 100NL 6Max looks like this at the moment;

    Some of the areas in which I think I need to evolve my game are;

    1) Loosen up.
    2) Better ability to put opponents on hand ranges.
    3) Be more aggressive with my draws.
    4) Do not allow my current upswing/downswing state affect plays. Downswing = bigger nit, upswing = a looser nit.
    5) Increase bluffing frequency.
    6) Increase 3 betting range in suitable spots.
    7) Less folding, more raising, more value betting.
    8) Understand better strat posts by the FTR regs.

    In the past when I have tried to apply some of this stuff it had a habit of turning into random spew and I need to avoid this as much as possible by being clear in my mind why I am making the play I am making and is it +EV play. If 2008 ends with me being a winning 14/11 (or worse) nit then I will be happy enough but I feel there is more out there to be had. Go, go, go!

    February was not a great start to my operation. Early in the month in my PC decided not to boot up and would not repair so I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything again. As of now I will be backing up my files on a monthly basis in case the same thing happens again.
    Mid feb' and I cashed out $4,000 of my roll for a variety of reasons so with my roll at $2,000 I moved down to 50nl and played ~10k hands on Full Tilt for a profit of 2 buy-ins. So for March I have decided to cash out of Full Tilt (although may go back to clear their $300 apology bonus) and deposit onto Party Poker once more. I have never quite enjoyed playing on Party but I am a better player now compared to when I last played there. I shall play there mostly this month either 4 tabling 50NL or 2 tabling 100NL as I want to really practice on areas of my game I need to improve which I feel I cannot do playing 6 tables. So far table selection is far better than Full Tilt and fish are so much easier to find. Some hands below against Party fish with VPIPs 50-100%.

    I am on a bit of a heater atm @ Party but bad players are so easy to find there. I had a fish to my left who had pushed me off a couple of pots then the following went to showdown. Hoped I would get my chance before he went busto.

    I am also playing looser now and I feel my game improving playing a bigger variety of hands in different situations. I want to start adding more tables again but resisting at the moment as it may not benefit my game just yet.

    March has been my best month yet. 3k+ with bonus/rakeback. Have been working on my games as planned, especially playing back at TAGG/LAGG regs a bit more, though still can be a bit spewy. 3rd time is the adjustment right?

    I am winning more w/o showdown now. One of my biggest leaks was giving up to easily on pots but I am now picking up more unwanted $$. Get caught sometimes but often helps my table image.

    Tonight I took my first sustained shot at 200NL. I usually 6 table 100NL 6max and have recently dropped one table of 100NL and added one table of 200NL. Now I am +30BI for 200NL I am going to make more consistent attempts at moving up. Played 3-4 tables tonight. Winners and losers;

    1. First stack at 200NL. Standard set over set.

    Whats your table selection strategy? Do you multi site when you play? How hard is that to pull off?

    I generally look for tables with the highest players/flop% and avg pot figures with available seats/empty waiting lists. I will drop a table if its vpip drops below 25% over a reasonable sample with no fish present and find another. I do not multi-site when I play but will change sites during a session if I can find better tables.
    Another thing I look out for is if a fish with a big stack leaves the table and the site has a search function I will see where they have gone. Sometimes they move up a limit and I had success when following fish from 100NL->200NL. Not going to do the same yet 200NL->400NL until my bankroll gets a little bigger.

    I have dropped below 30BI for 200NL and being a bankroll nit I am going to drop back down to 100NL. Some fun was had while it lasted!

    Going to be a while before I take shots at 200NL again. Downswing continued when I dropped back to 100NL and excluding Rakeback and bonuses I have had my first losing month. Got my money in good in alot of spots to get outdrawn but still made plenty of -ev plays which also contributed to a poor April. I will post my fave beat of the month and leave it at that for now.

    I have also withdrawn $2,000 of my bankroll. Some of this was invested in a new, larger monitor. I am not a fan of mini views so I can now multi-table without overlap on the euro sites I play at after withdrawing from Stars and FTP. Off to the accountabililty thread now to post some goals. 20k hands @ 5ptbb/100 sounds reasonable.

    Been double/triple barrelling a bit more recently as my reads improve. A big leak of mine is giving up too easily on the money in the middle when my cb's are called. And if I do get caught its only good for my table image anyway so its got to be +EV. Game has also loosened up since first operation post. Currently running at 19/15. This has come from opening up my ranges in each position and also 3 betting alot more than before ldo.

    May has been a bit of a swingy month. I was hoping to get rolled for another shot at 200NL by the end of the month. Looked like I was going to fail but last 2 evenings have been productive!

    So June I will be playing 200NL more regularly. It will be my third shot at moving up after twice moving down to 50NL/100NL due to a cashout first time and a few buy ins lost the second time. Third time lucky I hope.

    A quick review of 2008 so far. Due to a PC failure the stats below are from early Feb' to date. I played 50NL exclusively in Feb' and in June I played almost exclusively at 200NL. I played some 200NL in January but moved to 50NL after a cashout and my next attempt at 200NL was at about 40k hands on the graph but after dropping $2k I moved back down to 100NL.

    To be honest I am probably a typical TAG with numerous leaks who is owned by better players. My game still needs loads of development but it has got me this far so I am happy enough. I really do need to post some hands where I struggle. Anyway maybe some shots at 400NL are not too far off but luckily where I am now playing offers 300NL so I am able to "half move up".

    At the end of June I had a -$1k day and I thought nothing of it beyond "that sucks, move on". In February I never saw myself playing a $500 pot without shitting myself, now its a near every session occurence. Many pearls of wisdom are in this here forum. If I can do it anyone can. Cheers FTR and all who sail in her!!!!!!!!!!

    Have gone and dropped 10 buy-ins at 200NL in only 2k hands. Pretty standard coolers and a bit of tilt.

    200BB deep against a fish who regularly calls pre with Ax and had luckboxed his stack to nearly 350BB when his previous Ax hit two pairs e.t.c.

    Still plenty rolled for 200NL but I now I am playing 100NL for a couple of thousand hands where a strange thing happened. I was literally dealt a blank turn on a shitty board with AA. I want compensation dammit!!!

    But your stats are still pretty nitty, and thus this operation is not serving its purpose, and it should be closed.

    What site you playing on now? What the games like?
    You should try playing OnGame, the blank turns are a regular occurrence.

    Was playing at Ladbrokes but have just withdrawn from there. Games were pretty good but July has been really shitty for me there. This combined with the fact that I have withdrawn part of my roll for a Herman Miller Aeron Chair as I wish to grind in comfort, means I am now back to 100NL for the umpteenth time. Seriously thinking about some coaching atm.

    I tried OnGame again recently as I had a reload bonus but I did not last long there as the software just tilts me. Going to take a break for a few days before I decide what to do next. Either redeposit at Stars/FTP or open a new account somewhere. Suggestions welcome. Maybe one of the following I have not got accounts yet with - Prima/Cryptologic/Everest/Betfair.

    I won the hand, villain folded to river bet. Ladbrokes rather than compensate me or even apologise which I would of been fine with decided it would be more fun to flick my doomswitch for the second time this month!

    After being down $1.2k before rakeback/bonuses last month, August was looking likely to be a losing month as well I was down $800. Would of been -$1k but for a 55 hand session where I turned $5.35 in my FTP account into $230. http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...go-t74427.html

    Having cleared a PS reload bonus I am now playing back at Laddies trying to accumulate enough player points for 30% rakeback. I am having to really tighten up my game at Laddies because tbh I struggle in bloated pots with marginal hands against the fish there. I will still raise to isolate but only with postion.
    I would like to run normal for a few sessions at Laddies but I always seem to either lose on all the tables I am playing or I win on all of them. Last couple of evenings have been the latter and put me back in the black. Comfortably rolled again for 200NL but going to leave another shot for a bit while I work on the pokerz.

    Decided not to 3b the nit in EP as I would like the fish in the sb to come along for the ride.

    Just popping in for a rant. I am now one year on from when I first joined FTR and I feel that I have not progressed as far as I should have. Maybe coming to a realisation that I am actually still a bit shit at NLHE. One thing I am good is finding fish but they have been owning my soul so far this month. I feel like I should play on another site as I feel like I run bad there but it does not make sense when I am playing on tables with an average VPIP of +30% with crap players. Even the regs are not that good ( including me ldo ). When I loosen up I get into many marginal spots which my skill set cannot cope with and when I tighten up I still get owned. And I still have many, many leaks. I think I am need of a lightbulb moment, maybe some coaching.
