M2M's Mini OP: 6 Day Grindathon *COMPLETE*

Default M2M's Mini OP: 6 Day Grindathon *COMPLETE*

    Introduction:
I am about to attempt something that (for me) is borderline impossible. I probably won't even exceed 12 tables during this challenge, so I basically need to play full time for the next few days.

What The Fuck is M2M doing:
I am going to grind out 4002.40 VPPs by 11:59PM EST July 31 2009. I am taking on some bets for this (I'll give up to $300 total action (sorry high rollers ) at 1:1 odds (these are incredible odds if you think I actually have a 50% chance at pulling this off rofl). I have a tee time on Monday so I pretty much just lost half a day at least. I already have $200 in bets made so I'm looking for another $100, perhaps more if theres enough interest. If I clear the 4002.60 VPP's I hit PlatinumStar for the first time. I will post a screen shot of me and my PlatinumStar status if necessary to clarify the bet as being won. If lost I hope a mod deletes this thread so I don't have to be reminded of such failure.

    What I will play:
The highest stakes I will play will be 50nl cash. I have no history with 100nl at all, and if I am caught playing there, I lose the bet. You can check PTR to make sure that I am not logging hands at 100nl. Under our betting agreement I am allowed to play tournaments or SNG's if I wish, though I don't play anything greater than $11 so it would be really stupid for me to waste time there as my VPP/hour will be higher at 50nl.

    Additional Information:
My screen name is newguy89, aka thatlolspewtardreg. My VIP status is GoldStar. I am attempting to hit PlatinumStar by the end of this month. If I attain PlatinumStar (4002.60 more VPPs) I will be deemed to have won the bet, and will collect payment via Stars transfer ONLY. I will not accept bets from anyone who hasn't been a fairly active regular on FTR or IRC, sorry. I have the right to choose whom I accept bets from. If I do not obtain PlatinumStar I will be deemed to have lost the bet, and will transfer the amount in which you have agreed to bet against me to your PokerStars account. I will not do any other transfers.

The most hands of cash I have played in a month is 30k or so I believe, though I don't have this exact # as I am too lazy to check every month I've played in PT3 (wow I sound like I am really the person to take on a challenge).

Here is a screen shot taken at the end of yesterday to confirm my VIP Status and # of VPPs to clear by the end of this month:

So I need $100 more in action from anyone who is interested. If you want to bet less that is fine too. The grind starts tomorrow afternoon. I will check this thread for anyone interested in betting and begin then. Once again, $200 has already been offered yet still needs to be confirmed.

    Boog690: $100 - - - CONFIRMED
    iopq: $100 - - - CONFIRMED

If you guys could reply to this thread confirming your bet, I will edit this orginal thread and type CONFIRMED beside your name so I know you're still in.

I'll edit this thread tomorrow since it is probably poorly unorganized etc.

I will NOT be betting you for $75. That would be just stupid of me.

    I'm in for $100.

    This should be fun.
That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

Boog690 your $100 bet has been confirmed. Please enjoy watching me suffer.
  4. #4
hmmm , good luck . I'm in my own mini race needing another 212.54 Vpps to retain sliver star for the next two months. normally running 40-50 per day so should make it,but watching Gobbatino in a sweat tonight so less for me today.
Out of interest ....when exactly is the deadline ? is it midnight on the 31st in each persons local time zone or in a specific time zone.?
  5. #5
Since I know you wouldn't be taking bets against you if you weren't positive it was +EV then I'd bet against. But you'll be winning this so ez game.

i'll take $10 of action, not cos i want $10 from you - but cos i want you to actually do this and maybe the extra $$ will be good incentive?

edit. No stars account. Best of luck anyway! Bring your a-game every hand.

Being that M2M lives in the eastern time zone, it is probably in that time zone.

According to Spoonitnow's VPP Calculator, it's 20862 hands.

Yeah, on top of that I will probably play 25nl near the end of the day or if I doomswitch 50nl then it looks like I'll play 25nl for the entire week..which would be about 30k hands I believe.

The deadline will be in EST time.

FWIW I average about 26k hands a month playing cash, so I'm essentially putting in my monthly volume in 6 days.

iopq your $100 bet has been confirmed.

I am still open for another $100 total of betting, will accept smaller bets as well. The odds still remain at 1:1.
  13. #13
2273 hands down today, up a couple buyins, though could be alot more if I coud find my fold button.

I think I need to pay more respect to bets in general, but especially large bets on later streets.

    408.85/4002.60 VPPs cleared.
  14. #14
    4000 hands, +$400ish.

Might grind some later, might not.
  15. #15
    Day 1 recap:

    5000 hands. + $375. 870 VPP's collected.

I am so ridiculously tired, I hope I wake up tomorrow.

sucker's bet imo. I'd cheer for ya m2m, but itd be like cheering that the sun came up this morning. Thats not to belittle the challenge, its just i dont think theres any chance you can't do this, especially considering you have bets on it.

    Afternoon folks.

I slept for 12 hours last night :/ so I don't think I'll be able to put the volume in like I did yesterday. I guess I'll shoot for 3k and see what happens.

Gah! I've got some mad leaks. Time to get them identified more clearly.

Here's a common spot I play very poorly and usually just station bets like these off because 'lol pot odds call' is my most favorite line ever.

So what's our plan here? How many streets of gay bets are we willing to call? At what point would it be best to fold? Are we raising anywhere at all? Is calling down 3 streets here okay given the bet sizing and the fact that we're dealing with an unkown - we all know there's been those times where villain shows up with 7 high here.

No stats or reads on villain, he just sat down, so he doesn't have much information about my range either, and given his weird buy in and the way he played this hand he's likely pretty bad, maybe not as bad as me tho :P

    BB ($60.80)
    UTG ($104.50)
    Hero (MP) ($60.60)
    CO ($94.70)

Preflop: Hero is MP with J, J
    1 fold, Hero bets $1.50, 2 folds, SB calls $1.25, 1 fold

    Flop: ($3.50) Q, 4, 5 (2 players)
SB bets $1, Hero calls $1

    Turn: ($5.50) 4 (2 players)

Yeah it was pretty awful. When I checked how many I got it didn't even look like the numer had changed. So me wasting time at 25nl = more potential for boog690 and iopq to win this bet.

Why is that these regs continue to call 4bets with the most ridiuclous hands and run so hot...I hope I make it to the long run.

dude, you can crush to 100nl NEVER 3 or 4-betting hands other than AK/QQ+. They probably realise that your 4-betting range is fos, or they know that 79s has great equity against your 4-bet range, especially if you're giving them implied odds. And if you're only 4-betting these monsters then just 4-bet=shove.

Also, a-game? Not worth destroying a bankroll grinding out some prop bet...

In the KK hand although it looks like I played it like shit this guy has so much garbage in his range my shove was intended to be for value.

I played like shit today too. FML.
  34. #34
OK I played the AK hand like shit.
  35. #35
In the A9 hand that was my first 4bet. AQ was obviously for value when the guy 3bets 10%, and that's not even accouting for postional adjustments.

I managed to finish off the day at -5.5 buyins instead of the doomswitch 7 I mentioned earlier.

How am I supposed to defend against crazy 3bettors if I never 4bet?

FWIW that A9 open in MP was due to balance the fact I had been super nitty the last few orbits.

Dude, if you're on an uber-grind then you should be staying out of 3-bet and 4-bet wars. Your a-game is likely to be a little absent, so just play new-school-TAGnit-ABC. Go for 14-11-3 (3 = %3-bet), with about 75% fold to 3-bet or something.

Hand 1 - AKs. 4-bet sizing in AK hand? nothing wrong with folding, shoving, or 4-betting to $10. All reads dependent. Once he raises the flop it should be apparent that you're fucked, you shouldn't be seeing a turn. His range is AA+. His call of the 4-bet is standard deep and in position.

    Hand 2 - nh. 80-20 isn't 100-0, beats happen.

Hand 3 - Meh, i don't like the 4-bet. When you say for value, what do you mean? Value against his 3-bet-call/5-bet range? what you mean is that you're ahead of his 3-bet range, that doesn't make the 4-bet a value bet. You folding to a shove?

    Hand 4 -

worth about nothing dude, open fold. Who cares if you've been super nitty for a few orbits, that doesn't mean you should start playing badly. As played fold to the 3-bet.

tighten your open range up loads, then widen your 4-bet range. 4-bet appropriate hands, 89s is way better to 4-bet than A9o, if you don't understand why then think about reverse implied odds, how 89s does against a calling/5-bet range, vs A9o, etc. Pick appropriate spots. Focus on the situations where villain's 3-bet range is weak. Etc.
  37. #37
daven did a great job of covering this, so thank you sir.

Man I wish I wasn't so completely plastered last night that I couldn't even find my computer. 4betting when people have a wide calling range is a very high variance move, which is what you want to avoid when uber-grinding. You still got this man! Make sure you're in the correct state of mind the next time you open those tables, and pwn!
    Ich grolle nicht...
  38. #38
you wanna know my stats for this 'grindathon'?

    12/10 with a 32% ATS and a 3% 3bet.

I don't see any wars going on, most of the time I am 4betting the nuts it just so happens I lightened up a couple times.

sorry if I seem pissed but I really appreciate the support you guys are giving me.
  39. #39
In H1 villain's range is definately wider than AA+. He's gonig to flat my 4bet with anything suited/paired basically. The reason I made it slightly larger was due to our effective stack sizes.

In H3 I was 3betting with the intention of calling a shove. This guy was a nutcase with a 11% 3bet or something ridiculous and he was basically playing like every other aggro tag at this level who won't take shit from anyone. I've seen him c/r the river in a 4 way pot to some absurd amount when he was repping basically air - he got called and showed down bottom pair or something. He's been 'defending his blinds' ridiculously and I saw him 5bet shove on another table bvb. On the flop when he opened shove I fist-pump snap called, and I'm not kidding.

I was thinking in terms of just fold equity. His 3bet range was very wide and I was assuming that he would be continuing very tightly. For example, because I have the A blocker in my hand, he can only have 3 combos of AA instead of 6. I was actually expecting him to fold..but surprisingly he called :/. Am I thinking about this incorrectly?

I'm pretty much never, ever, ever '4bet bluffing' ever again because clearly everyone feels the need to 'protect their 3bet' by calling (I had 4 other 4bets called this session I had AK or better each time) with shitty hands trying to outflop someone with limited implied odds.

Any time I try to play more just to earn pts, grind bonus or w/e, I play horrible. If you've got $3.7k in roll, go learn 100nl and make gold-plated-iridium-covered-marble-tungsten-platinum-sterling-nickel-cadmium w/e next month.

I can see how not being on my A-game affects my play. I think the first thing I lose, especially with the monkey regs, is patience, and it is something I am going to have to control over the next 2 days as well as I can. Thankfully I only have about 3500 more hands to go, so this should be really, really easy - I even have time for breaks

Thanks for stopping by my op rob. As soon as this ridiculous bet is over I have serious plans regarding study and working my ass off in August to get better so I can prepare myself for 100nl and make those gold-plated-iridium-covered-marble-tungsten-platinum-sterling-nickel-cadmium w/e next month. (I really like that line lol).

Also, a-game? Not worth destroying a bankroll grinding out some prop bet...
Any time I try to play more just to earn pts, grind bonus or w/e, I play horrible. If you've got $3.7k in roll, go learn 100nl and make gold-plated-iridium-covered-marble-tungsten-platinum-sterling-nickel-cadmium w/e next month.
Please ignore this for two days and do this awesome thing you're attempting. If I know you at all I know you aren't destroying your BR in 6 days of grinding.
You know me well. The roll is fine, and it will remain fine. When I grind tonight I'm going to take actual breaks. I think I played 5 hours straight last night trying to get unstuck and managed to come back a little bit, but it could have been better.

    272 more vpps to go.

I have moved down to 25nl indefinitely due to running very, very bad while not playing my best.

I refuse to discuss any plans regarding future bankroll considerations with respect to moving back up to 50nl.

I had some plans for August regarding HU but they are now cancelled indefinitely as well.

The next post in this blog will be a picture of me repping my Platinum Star. Might as well ship the monies now. Thanks for reading.

Gratz M2M, I considered Taking the remaining $100 in action but I didn't really think this would be a challenge for you... now if it had a limit/winrate req. attached...
    Check out my self-deprecation here!

I gotta admit when I woke up the first day of the grind I felt kinda sick to my stomach due to this thought: 'what the hell did I just get myself into'..

I made the thread at like 3am the night before, then once I was awake I realized I had a shit load of work to do - and as usual when I have a shit load of work to do - I finish it asap.

I had quite a good run the first day, but as the week went on I became more fatigued and frustrated when I began running really bad. I ended up downswining pretty hard near the end and I had a difficult time handling the variance at 50nl since I'm still used to only losing $50 here and there, rather than a few hundred. So my worrying mindset led to some spew, but I managed to grind back a bit near the end. I spent 40 hours playing in 5 days which is probably at least twice my normal weekly volume.

In August I am going to be focusing alot on fixing some leaks so I can get on my way at 50nl. My hugest leak ever is self-leveling, as it has been since day 1. Dunno what I'm going to do about that but we'll see. I'll be grinding some 25nl for awhile to keep track of a few things I'm working on, then I'll take it from there.

Right now you have a golden opportunity to analyse the ways in which you level yourself, play badly and spew when you are playing and not playing your A-game. This mini-grind operation is likely to show examples of all the absolutely worst thing you do while playing because you have been playing under a new high of stress.

One way to stop leveling yourself I think is to learn to recognise when it's happening and catch yourself. This may be in the spirit of cognitive behavioral therapy (I remotely have a laymans understanding of what that is) - by that I mean recognise the thought patterns that lead to the actions that you are trying to avoid. A perhaps related way is to look for more overt signs - once you've spewed off a hand instead of "burying" it as the proud ego will try to do so as not to admit having done something stupid, take a moment to reflect analytically if that hand was well played - and maybe implement rules for how bad a play you allow yourself to make before you take a forced break to get your head straight.

I don't have good habits around this myself, but it's akin to having a preparation routine that gets your mind in the right mindset to play the A-game - and when you recognize the A-game is off, just stop, clear the head, do the routine again, then sit back down.

In other words I think the way fix the self-leveling leak is to play your A-game more of the time. Tilt management.

Thanks for the informative reply Erpel. The point you make of learning to recognize when the spew is happening, catch myself, and then reflect on my thought process throughout the hand seems like a well defined process towards controlling tilt.

One of the things I am going to be doing over the next couple days is go through the 45k hands I played this month and sort out the big/medium pots lost and try to recall my feelings during each hand, what made me play the way I did etc, and whether or not each line was optimal given the information I had in each situation. I think I'll likely see more illogical lines than what I anticipate, but discovering them is only going to give me the opportunity to get better. I think my biggest issue with hands like this is I try to ignore them as if they never happened. I will be making an effort towards stopping my ego from allowing me to objectively analyze each and every hand played at the table. Given enough time and effort, I should make it through small stakes soon enough.

I have some reading to do on this as well, which I will be taking care of very soon.
