Default Op. Beggar can't be Choosers

    Here's the rundown:

I'm a poor college student, with barely enough money to pay rent (and play in the Gauntlet).

I have some money invested in Empire & Party, but I'm gonna let that sit for a little bit. My thing now is Freerolls. Yes, this may not be as interesting as some other operations, but this is what you would call a low budget operation.

My dad played a couple of freerolls on Bodog poker and ended up turning that money into over $750.

So yesterday I began my quest. Dec. 1, 2004 3:00AM. I ended up placing 21st out of 547. Sadly, only the top 18 got paid out. I'm basically looking to play at any poker venue that offers freerolls regularly. I'm concentrating at Royal Vegas and Bodog for now, but maybe I'll participate in Empire as well, b/c I know they offer 500$ freerolls daily.

    Goal:
Place ITM in freerolls, and try to turn that small change into a legit bankroll.

    Phase 2...

busted out in 413th out of 578. I was in the BB with A2s and some maniac UTG pushes all in, I fold. He shows 23o. During the next orbit he shoves all in about 4 times. He gets called one time by pocket 6's to his Q8o and catches an 8. Next hand, I'm sitting at 2.2K he goes all in again. I call w/ A10 and he flips over 10 10. The rest is history. I thought I had a read on him, but I guess I was wrong. Til the next one...

Just finished 23rd out of 558, top 18 cash. This is starting to get annoying. I mean, alteast I'm not losing money on these...

I'm sitting at 21K, around the avg. stack and I get 10 10. My first thought was to just fold til I get in the money. Blinds are 600/1200. A guy with about 28K raises to 3000, I call and so do 2 others. Flop comes out 3 3 4. I bet 4K, the raiser goes all in. I thought about this for a while before finally calling. I put him on AK, b/c why would he bet so high with AA or KK? He ended up having KK.

Any advice on how to play when you're close to the bubble? I usually play more agressive, raising pre-flop since people become tight, but it usually comes back to bite me. (ex. placing 21st and 23rd with top 18 cash). I'm considering putting on auto fold until the top 18 from now on...

Stealing more right before the money can be profitable. Just be sure to use your position and get away from it if you get pushed back at. As soupie's said, people tend to tighten up right near the money break so it follows that if you get pushed back at, you are probably against a monster.

I have 1K, the starting amount. Hold A10s, some dude moves all in for about 895. I call. He has 48o. Flop and turn are blanks and the river is a 4.

    There's always next week.

Why did you call an all in with A10s? You barely had him covered. It doesn't matter whether he had AA or 48o, this is a bad call!

    Update:

    854/1000

    Blinds are 10/20.

I'm sittin' at 900 and I'm in the SB & get dealt AK. One guy limps in. I raise to 100. BB calls, and limper calls. Flop is A92 rainbow. I bet pot of 300. Both call. Turn is 10. I go all in for 300 more, BB folds and limper calls. He turns over AQ. River is Q.

Ok, ok... last post til I place in one of these, I swear.

    535/659

In the middle of an all-nighter (finals) I figure I'll play in a freeroll. Fold every hand for 15 mins. til I get 10 10. I'm UTG, I raise 6x BB to 120. 2 callers. Flop is 9 7 4. I bet around the pot... 300. One caller. Turn is 7. I go all in (about 400 more), and the guy calls. Flips over K J. I'm sure you can guess the river card. One of these days I'll place... I think.

    OK, we're in business fellas.

    6/725

After 3 and a half hours, I finally get my first placing. I actually forgot I registered for this and showed up half an hour late, and by that time 300 people were eliminated already and my stack was at 850. I was around 2nd in chips and I was holding A9 at the final table. I flopped 2 pair, but a guy with A6 caught runner-runner club to make a flush. I was still alive with about 80K a couple of hands later and I held JJ. A short stack raised the 2k/4k blinds all in, I go all in and a guy with A4 calls. 2 3 and 5 come out to destroy my JJ and short-stack's QQ. It feels good to finally place. So what did I get for my efforts? $5.

Rather than play the small change stakes with my $5, I decided to place a 3-team parlay on some college basketball games. If it hits, I turn my $5 into $30.

    George Washington +3½
    West Virginia

    Kent State +6½
    Boston College

    Tenn. Tech
    St Peters -3½
