OPERATION: $20k in 2009

With the new year I've decided to get really log my play and try to really get back into poker and improve my game.

In 2008 I found myself a lot less interested in poker. I use to watch it on television all the time, read all the forums and it really occupied my mind, but now I just put in a session because I feel like I have to do some work, I just care a whole lot less. I still played about decent amount of poker, just shy of 200k hands.
The best thing to happen in 2008 was that I got myself a great career job where I make a good salary and have tremendous job security. I should be pretty stress free and won't have to rely on poker for income. I'm hoping to withdraw a lot less from my bankroll this year and get it up to $20k.

I was doing really well for most of 2008 until this past month where I went on a ridiculous losing streak and lost about 1/3 of my bankroll in a matter of 3 weeks.

I'm going to continue playing 200NL (6max) for the time being, with iPoker being my main poker room. I'll play on Stars too when I have a deposit bonus to clear. I'm hoping to get in about 15k-20k hands a month.
So I'm going to try to get over this losing streak and get my game back on track.

I played my first session of the new year and it's the first time I've played in around 2 weeks. I haven't taken a break this long for as long as I can remember.

This session I kept short and sweet. I played for just under an hour and about 600 hands. I'm pretty tired today and didn't feel like playing too long. I ended up up 3 buy-ins. No real interesting hands, I don't find too many hands really interesting anymore.
I finished up a $240 PokerStars bonus that I had for months. I also got my rakeback for December from my iPoker room. So the old bankroll is up over $1000 today which is nice.

I only have to work Tuesday this week so I hope to get some good time in at the tables on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But I have to start looking for a new home as my iPoker skin is leaving the network in a few weeks. I also have pretty much given up on PT3. I'm going to fool around with Hold 'em Manager and set up that database and HUD and see how that program is. Gonna try to make this a productive week.

Today I was trying to set-up HEM. Lost about $200 while I was two-tabling setting up the HUD and adjusting that. Then I played for about two hours 8-10 tabling for the first time with HEM, still takes a bit to get use to. I lost another two buy-ins killing most of my profits for the week.

I doubt I'll play this weekend with the NFL playoffs and I gotta work on Monday so the next session will probably be Tuesday.

The first full week is in the books. It wasn't as productive as I'd like it to be. I only played 3000 hands, and end up up one buy-in. I really want to make more time to reviewing hands and actually using HEM and PT3. I still haven't made a decision on whether to switch over to HEM. I should really work on that Tuesday and Wednesday.

I'll give myself a small goal this week to play 4k hands and get my software/database situation in order.

And after trying out HEM, I like a lot of the features but I can't get the HUD setting up properly on either of the sites I play on. The support in the forums couldn't fix it either. Maybe I'll try it again in 6 months or so and maybe they can get the bugs fixed.
I guess I'll stick it out with PT2 + PAHud for while longer, it actually works properly unlike PT3 and HEM.

I played a little yesterday and today, won yesterday and lost today. Again, I didn't play as much as I would like. 1.5k-2k hands a day is what my goal is on my weekdays off. I don't think I played as well as I could have today because I was messing around with the HUD trying to fix it and I was probably distracted.
I'll be back at it on Friday and am hoping to have a big day.

I have somewhat of the same goal, except i'm starting with nothing and want to reach 20k this year. I know its going to be tough but i really want to do it. GL with you on your quest. It may be a bumpy ride but once you get their you will forget all about the ride because you have the prize!!!!

Maybe give HEM another shot?

Create a folder called "HEM Imported hands" or something, then in HEM, go to configure auto import and check the "move files after import" box when you add the hand history import folders. This way you don't lose hand histories.

Don't mess around with the databases. All you need to do is set up the auto-import, get a HUD running, then edit it at while playing super=micro stakes to get it set-up how you like. Build some simple reports by drag and drop, if you want to set up a position report for full ring just google it (there's a post on 2+2 on how to do this). Etc. I switched to HEM from PT and find HEM to be gold, although it took a few days to get used to...

I tried setting up that HUD for Stars and iPoker (mini-view) and it just wouldn't work properly, the support at the forums couldn't help either. I'm just giving up on HEM and PT3 for a few months then I'll go back and see if they have worked out the bugs.

This past week didn't go well, not horrible but not good.
First I'm having problems with my old iPoker skin and my new one. I have a missing $30 from from my old room and am working it out with them and support with my new room seems clueless, I can't even get enough money on there yet.
It looks like I'll play most of this week on Stars. I'm still working on a reload bonus so that's fine.

So I played 3.8k hands this week, not as many as I'd like since I had the whole week off and I was down just over a buy-in.

Another week in the books and it was very bad yet again. Nothing went right for me this week. My bankroll has took a pretty big hit.
I yet again didn't play as much as I would like too and didn't meet my goal for the week of hands played.

I have to work tomorrow but Wednesday I plan on checking out my PT and doing a little analysis of the first month.

January was a failure on pretty much every level. I ended up down 5.5 buy-ins but got about 1.5 back with rakeback and bonuses. I also only put in 10k hands, short of 15k-20k goal.
Over those hands I played 21/16.5/4. It'd like to play a little more aggressive on the river, I was only at 1.43. I also think I call too many raises pre-flop.
Going into this year and operation I also planned on getting more into poker like actually reading these forums and the 2+2 and watching it on television. Also doing more session reviews. All of which I have done pretty much none of.

February will hopefully be a better and more productive month for me. I'm not going to mess around with new poker programs and get frustrated with those, just gonna stick with PT2. And I'll be settled in with my new iPoker home hopefully by the end of the week.
My February goal is to play 15k hands and be up 5 buy-ins. I'll also try to find one interesting hand to post here after each session.

I had a just over an hour session today and it went fairly well, ended up just over two buy-ins. I really felt good and thought I was making good decisions every time. It might have to do with that I was playing 7-8 tables instead of my usual 8-10. I made a real effort to not call as many preflop raises and it looks like I did. I played 22/20 poker today.

Here was my hand of the session.
I liked calling pre-flop here because it wasn't a big raise and it had two calls, it was a good hand to call a raise with and I had the puck.
The flop is obviously huge, and there was some nice action in front of me. I really wanted to get it all in there on the flop and with the two callers I think I might get some action with a healthy raise, plus the CO is a huge donk, playing 85% of his hands.
Turns out he was the only caller and I hated the paired board but it didn't matter against him. I was still miles ahead of his range and there was too much money in the pot.

I played a longer session today, about 2 hours and 1200 hands. It did not go well. I lost the same amount that I won yesterday but I thought it could have been worse. I suffered a few bad river beats and had my KK run into AA twice. I'm was kinda relieved when I saw I was down just over $400, it didn't seem like much went right today.
I finished up a Stars bonus so it's back to iPoker once I can get some money into it.

There were a few interesting hands today.

Here, the guy had some pretty tight stats and I really thought he had A9 or A8, possibly 88 or 99. I didn't put him on just an ace with that action. Didn't like seeing the result here.

I was happy with last week, I got in over 7k hands which is quite an improvement compared to what I've done so far this year. I ended up just a little over one buy-in.

Today I finally got my money into my new iPoker home. Now I have another problem, I have 29 days to clear a $600 bonus. I need 21181 FPPs in that time. I think that should be 20k hands, it's gonna be difficult to do. I don't have any extra time off work in the next month and I'm off to Las Vegas for 4 nights so that's a lot of lost time. From March 3-9 I can't put anytime in at the tables online. So I guess I'm gonna have to grind extra hard on my days off work.

I'm gonna take out $1150 out of my bankroll to bring to Vegas, hopefully I come back with something close to that amount. Now that I'm back in the 5 digits I would like to stay there.

Thanks, but I've been there before. I had it up to $17k during last summer but some withdrawals and a $5k downswing brought it crashing down faster than the stock market.


A little update: The first two days of this week have been very productive. I've logged in 4700 hands and am up 2.5 buy-ins. I got 5788 iPoker FPPs too and now I'm thinking I'll only need about more 13-14k more hands to get this bonus. It's pretty juicy, $600 for about 20k hands I figure. If I keep putting in work like the last two days I should be able to do it.

I'm back to work tomorrow after a 12 day break, I'll be back on the tables Thursday and Friday, hopefully see some similar results.

I was back at it today. Session one went just fine, play about 1k hands and finished up about $250.

Above is my write up for January. Below is what I did in February.
- I have stuck with PT2, I tried the new beta for PT3 but it's still bullshit.
- I'm all settled in with my new poker room now
- I played more than the 15k hands I was aiming for and I was up more than 5 buy-ins

February was a success for me. The only negative for the month is I still haven't got around to really analyzing my sessions and reading up on the poker forums. Hopefully I'll pick that up in March and get another 20k hands in.


I had a session today and played 2.5k hands and finished up 2 buy-ins. I found a lot of juicy tables and fishes, I thought I would be up more but I did suffer a few bad beats for stacks. I'm just cruising along to get this bonus, I should do it no problem.

That will be my only session for the week. I have to work tomorrow and Wednesday I'm off to Sin City. I paid for the flight and hotel with personal money but all my spending and poker money is coming from the roll. So hopefully I do well at the tables down there to cover my drinking/food/partying costs and my roll doesn't suffer too much. That's it, I'll update in a week I guess.

So here's my update on last week:
The only online session I played was on Monday and was up 2 buy-ins. Then I took $1k of the roll to Las Vegas. I was staying at Imperial Palace and played there mostly. The players were pretty shitty mostly but during the day I could find only about two big fish at the table at a time. I went to Ceasar's Palace on Friday afternoon and it was very nitty on my table, but it was a nice room and a lot of the pros where there for the Heads-up Championship.
Overall the first two days didn't go well, there were a lot of passive players and calling stations and I just could hit a hand. Two times within 5 hands my overpairs ran into sets, which obviously hurt.
My last day on Saturday I had a big morning finally hitting some hands and cashing out at one table up $500. At one point on my last afternoon I had all the money I brought so I was up a few hundred at the tables. I must have played 20 hours of poker and did not get AA once, and only hit sets with twice, with KK and QQ when I really didn't need them.
Then I joined my friends at the blackjack table and things went sour. I couldn't hit a hand to save my life, the dealer was end laughing at me. I know how to play properly, I did a lot of casino whoring online, but it just wasn't my day and I couldn't leave because I thought I was so due. I ended up losing about half of my money. Then I threw $200 on red...and lost. haha
All and all in was a fun trip. I came home with a little money but not much, I'll just transferring it to CAD and put it with my personal money.

I had a little expected bonus this week. I haven't played at Ultimate Bet in as long as I can remember and I got a promotional e-mail from them this week. In the e-mail it had my account balance and it was $30 and change, I would have never left any money there so I don't know where that came from.
So I installed the software and grinded some blackjack and some micro stakes in an attempt to get to the minimum withdrawal of $100. I got lucky and got it up there, there is now a $100 cheque in the mail.

I put in a little session yesterday and dropped 2.5 buy-ins and had a longer one today but picked up 4.5 buy-ins. I also finished up my $600 deposit bonus today too. So all in all this week is going pretty good so far. I hope to put in another 1000 hands or so tomorrow or Sunday to wrap up the week.

I had a little expected bonus this week. I haven't played at Ultimate Bet in as long as I can remember and I got a promotional e-mail from them this week. In the e-mail it had my account balance and it was $30 and change, I would have never left any money there so I don't know where that came from.
So I installed the software and grinded some blackjack and some micro stakes in an attempt to get to the minimum withdrawal of $100. I got lucky and got it up there, there is now a $100 cheque in the mail.

I put in a little session yesterday and dropped 2.5 buy-ins and had a longer one today but picked up 4.5 buy-ins. I also finished up my $600 deposit bonus today too. So all in all this week is going pretty good so far. I hope to put in another 1000 hands or so tomorrow or Sunday to wrap up the week.

It seems like I'm on some sort of a roll now. This is my 5th week in a row showing a profit. I played just under 5k hands and finished up 4 buy-ins on the week, I completed that $600 deposit bonus as well. That $100 cheque from UB is in the mail and I also ended just putting that leftover cash from my Vegas trip back in the roll. So I had a health bump to the bankroll this week.

I'm off work until Friday so I hope to get 8k hands in this week. I really want to play a good amount in March and April because when the weather starts getting better I don't want to be in front of a computer. We get shitty weather here 9 months a year so I want to take advantage of it when it's nice.

It's been an ugly, ugly week.
I've play a little over 6k hands over the past four days and am down 7 buy-ins. I really can't believe the swings I have.



The first two days were a disaster, I'm actually surprised I didn't lose more. Day three was really something. I swear I hit sets with what seemed like 1/2 of the pairs I have. I was getting hands left and right. If it wasn't for a huge cooler for a stack plus and a bad beat after getting it all-in on the flop for a $500 pot, it would have been a huge day.
Then today, it was just another huge disaster. Coolers, bad beats, you name it, everything went wrong.
Very, very frustrating week.

I played a little on Saturday and finished up a buy-in putting a small dent into my losses from the week. It looks like I ended up down 6 buy-ins but I did clear a $250 Stars bonus and I got some rakeback so the roll didn't drop as much.

I have been playing a little 400NL also. If I can't find enough good 200NL tables I'll look for a good 400NL one. I usually have only have 1 going at a time. I'm up just a little over a few hundred hands at that level.

I put in another 5k hands yesterday and today. This rake race really has me motivated to put in work, I was in first place earilier in the week but two guys logged a lot of hands in the past few days and passed me as of yesterday's update. There is 4 days left and I'm at work for two of them so I doubt I'll be able to play enough to win. I can see getting 3rd place ($300), which is fine but that $1200 would be real nice.

Here was a huge hand for me. I really thought he had a hand like 77-JJ here. Too bad I couldn't outdraw him.

The rake race I'm in ends tomorrow and I'm guessing I'll finish 4th or 5th, which would get me $240 or $180. I played 12k hands this week, not bad considering I'm holding down a full time job too. This week had positive results, I finished up 6 buy-ins.

Sometime this week I'll do a analysis/wrap up of the first quarter of 2009 and see how I'm doing.

My last session of the month was a disaster. It was one of, if not THE worst days ever, I lost $1800. It really hurt the bottom line.

My main goals were to play 15k-20k hands a month and make $20k for the year. The year started off slow but I put in a lot of work in last 5-6 weeks getting my average up to 20k hands/month for the first 3. As for the $20k? I deleted "My Documents" from my laptop by mistake including all my gambling related excel files so my records aren't totally accurate. I do believe I'm up about $2483.20, pretty pathetic. I'm only on pace to get half way to my goal.

Looking at my stats, it doesn't look that bad. I figured I was a break even player at 200NL (6max) and it looks like I can pull of a 1BB/100 hand profit (I was down about $1400 in all-in EV bad luck.) The other levels/games I can't really analyze as the small size is ridiculously small. I also played five $30 one table tourneys which I did well in, I cashed in 3 of them showing a little profit. Any advice on those stats/graphs/etc. would be appreciated.

For the next 3 months I would like to play about 50k hands. I'll probably play a lot less in June as the weather around here gets better. And hopefully, my fortune turns a little and I start seeing some nicer results.
Also, as the baseball season is just around the corner. I am going to start to give baseball handicapping a shot and that will affect this goal as I will be using this money. I'm going to make this a poker/sportsbook bankroll. I plan on using $20 as a unit and pretty much betting that each time. Mostly betting dogs and some over/unders.

What happened in the last session? How much of it was spew?- Chin up, if you play decent poker it'll turn around. Gluck with the handicapping, are you going to operate a stop loss? How are you planning on pricing the baseball up? If you are going to have a stop loss with the baseball what will it be? G'luck sir.

Probably a combination of coolers, bad luck, bad play, everything I guess. I was down over $700 in all in bad luck. I lost $450 with QJ on a QJ2 board getting all in on the flop. Another $400 with QQ in a SB/BB battle. Looking at every pot I lost over $100 everything was pretty standard in my mind. Only 1 boarder line/bad decision.

I not totally sure what stop loss is. I'm assuming it's a number like $500, if I'm down that much I'll quit. If that's it, I guess it's $1000. But I would think it would be pretty hard to lose that much betting $20 a game.
I'm not going to have any type of "system", just keeping up with baseball as much as I can and absorb as much information as I can and going with my gut. I'll read some of the boards like covers.com and SBR to get some advice and information too.

I played on Thursday and made a little back, I was up about $300 taking a dent into Monday's big losses.

On the sportsbetting side, it hasn't really started yet. I liked the Braves on opening night getting plus money with the better starter but I didn't pull the trigger. I'll probably make a few bets next week.

I had another 5 buy-in losing session last week, just fantastic. And that's what I was down over 3k hands last week. I did get a rakeback payment for $700 or so this week so the roll didn't go down that much.

My first week of sportsbetting is in the book and I went 6-7 showing a tiny profit of 0.15 units. One mistake I won't make again is that I picked the Giants on the road as a favorite. The price wasn't that bad and I figured Lincy would shut down the pathetic Padres. It didn't work out, I just don't think I should be betting on a bad team like the Giants as a favorite on the road no matter who is pitching.

I only played about 4k hands this week and I was really into it. Feel like I did earlier in the year and just going through the motions. It was a breakeven-ish week but I also collected my rakerace money too.

So I went 6-7 with betting on MLB for a small gain and I'm up just about 1 unit overall.

I haven't updated this in a while as I feel like I did at the beginning of the year and just not into playing. It feels like a chore.
Anyways, I played about 3k hands this week and ended up 2 buy-ins.

On the sportsbetting side of things, it was a bad week. I had a 10 game losing streak, I'm still getting the hang of this I guess. I should be doing a little more research on my picks. I'm down just over 3 units on the year as of right now and have a overall record of 19-29.

I'm going to start to make regular withdrawal now too. I am planning on buying a townhome by the end of the year so I'll need to gather up as much money as I can. I'm going to withdraw $500 from the roll every month for the next while.

Only 3.3k hands logged in this week with a positive outcome, up one whole buy-in. I got a few hundred back this week too from my loyalty program with my iPoker room. It looks like I finally got PT3 working properly, now I just have to get use to all these new stats. I don't really even know what to do with these 3bet and 4bet stats as I don't really know what numbers are high or low. Guess I have to start googling to find some sort of PT3 guide.

I gained a little ground betting baseball this week was 5-5 and now I'm down a total of 2.5 units on the season.
One thing that really pisses me off with online gambling is the trouble it is to move money around. I want to fund my Matchbook.com account but none of the method are that good. I might have to get a bank wire wait the time and pay the ridiculous fees. It would be so much easier if Neteller didn't kick Canadians out, I miss Neteller.

Decent week at the tables, up a buy-in and a half and put in 5k hands. iPoker is beginning to really piss me off, I can't believe how many short stackers there are out there. There seems to be 2-3 at every table, good thing that they are pretty bad, but they can be a pain in the ass.

I had a good week betting baseball too, I'm up just under 3 units on the year and have a YTD record of 30-37. I'm 4-2 betting alternate run lines which is really saving me. On a side note, my Blue Jays are keep up the good work and the pitchers on the DL are slowly coming back.

Nothing like starting a new week than in a huge hole. What a disaster session. I'd say about 90% of my bluffs didn't work, I was getting called down like I was some 70/30 donk.
