Operation 1K!

Well I have taken an 18 month hiatus from playing poker online and live.

I used to play live all of the time with friends and at Turning Stone. I also played some online at Bodog and pokerstars where I made about $300-$400 with random cash games and lucky breaks. All in all I made about 2.5k from playing poker for about 2 years at the end of highschool and beginning of college. But I got so busy at college that I completely stopped playing.

Well I've come back, I'm on summer vacation and I'm looking to do this thing the right way. Oh and I like money and my summer job doesn't fill my need at $9 an hour!

I have started playing $10NL and here it begins

Day 1 (Aug1), started at $25NL and then realized I do NOT have the bankroll to mess around with $25NL. So I decided to try and build a bankroll for it! Started off hot, and then dropped off, but ended up a couple bucks at the end of the day.



Day 2 (Aug 2), What a fight! Fought and fought and fought to get back to even, ended up down $0.30 on the day.



Day 3 (Aug 3), A GREAT day! I played great poker, got a couple breaks until the last hand of the day when I was about to get off. As you can see, I had a major drop off at the end of the day from over $50 to about $30. Made a horrible play, I will post it below. I knew I shouldn't call, but I called anyways.

I have started folding hands worse than QQ to reraises preflop when they are a somewhat tight player.

Um... First thought when I read this was: "Wow, he needs 40BI's to move up to $25NL? That's a bit much". Then I read that you were starting at $10NL with only 10BI's? WTF mate? That's two extremes in the same operation!

A3 hand, I probably fold to the Check/raise on the flop, just not worth it with this weak of a hand. You are only 4-handed though, so this isn't too bad. I definitely do NOT just call his weak bet on the turn though, It's raise or fold time HERE to find out if he's serious. River is hard, I know. I've made a similar mistake myself when deep. Looks like a bluff, but you know it isn't, yet call anyways. Ugh. This is how we learn.

3000 hands is almost meaningless, so FWIW: Pre-flop Stats look a bit loose, but not too bad. Try to call less and/or raise more. At these limits you should be mostly betting or folding all the time. You're really aggressive though, careful not to get reckless! Your AF tells me that you are not calling a lot on other streets, that's good! (AFAIK AF is calculated as #-Raises/#-Calls)

Move down to 5NL, 14 BIs isn't enough to support yourself even as low as 10NL.

And probably at 6 max you should be stealing more blinds... but I'm a 6 max fish so w/e.

Took a couple rough beats today, didn't play too bad, ended down $7.40, but I will play again later tonight.

After all this, I'm even on the day. It's been up and down today!

Well, I hopped on the rollercoaster today.

Up and down and then a little bit back up I went!



I had to go for a run after my collapse, played some Michael Jackson to get my spirit back up and went back at it. I had the day off from work so I had a lot of free time and this was my longest and most hands played in a single day. Although I wish I stopped after my afternoon session. I knew it was only a matter of time before my Aces got cracked, and they did, along with Queens twice. ^_^

Tomorrow's a new day! Stay positive.

Okay, I'm trying to look on the bright side. I'm still up $75 total. Another ridiculous day. Lost $ with AA and KK today, got boned in a $5 tourney, and lost $37 total for the day.

The good thing is I didn't get as angry as I did last night. But I just can't believe the bad beats that I have been taking. Some are bad plays, granted, but just straight up, me betting hard with AK and someone calling with Ax and then the river coming x is just hard to take after a while.

I tilted for a little while, and I blame about $10-$15 on that. But I guess I just gotta cut my losses and make sure to play good poker. I've got the day off from work tomorrow and I hope to play better poker and hopefully the poker gods are with me.

What do you guys do when you are having a bad session? I find myself wanting to play more tables to get my $$ back, and I know that this is a bad strategy. Do you have any tips?

I meant to respond yesterday, but got sidetracked.

First, in reference to tilt, everyone is different, but most find that taking a break will help them get back on track. You've gone from not playing poker for a year and a half, to playing every day. You just jumped in the pool, but didn't realise that the water is sometimes cold, and you forgot your swimsuit. This is a drastic change for you, and it doesn't sound like you were emotionally ready for it.

In reference to your "Bad Beats" on Wednesday:
#1 First thing I noticed, you are a VERY short stack? Why? Pre-flop, Raise to $0.60 with 2 limpers, make them pay to see your hand. I would probably not've made the same play as Jiggy, but he's really deep stacked, you're a tiny stack and it's only 4-handed, so it's really not that bad. Just a 70/30
#2 Full stack! Good! Pre-flop to $0.50 with a limper. Turn off your CHAT! You are tilting yourself with comments like this! Good raise on the flop. Turn call of that donk bet is HORRIBLE. RAISE that shit up, or FOLD if you believe him, don't let him take charge of this hand yet. River call is bad also. I can tell in just these two hands how loose and passive Mr. Jiggy is. If he's betting, he's got at least a piece of the board. The river is OBVIOUS that he has a 5 or 6. FOLD. Turn OFF your chat. NOW. He's in your head, hard. This should really be the end of your session, you are way too emotionally attached to the results.
#3 Short stack again, you are losing value. Pre-Flop to $0.60 with 2 limpers! Flop bet is good, Turn bet is Ok, I'd go a little closer to pot with the added straight draw in addition to the flush draw. River sucks, but I would've check/called here. You'll catch a lot of players bluffing their flush draw here, trying to represent the J. Most times they won't have it. Again, turn off your chat. It's generally universally -EV the way that you are using it.
#4 Pre-flop is either a call or raise depending on the table. A call is fine. TPTK is a good hand, but not great on that flop. Was Vtrain really loose? That would be the only reason I would raise here. This is a tough spot, and really would depend on the read of Vtrain. Also, a push would've been a better raise, since you can't fold when he re-raises, and you'll have better FE...
#5 Standard idiocy by villian. You can't get away from the Half-stack here.
#6 You've made your point PF and on the flop. Check behind the turn. You're going to lose to the mini-stack on the river no matter what though. Wah.
AA tourney hand You were going to lose on that board probably no matter what. Why are you complaining though? It was still early in the tourney, and your M is still just fine. It's not like this one hand doomed your entire tournament.

In essence, you are tilting for the wrong reasons. You should be tilting for mistakes that YOU make, not theirs. Bad beats are part of the game, have you handed out any recently?

That post actually helps a ton. I never thought of upping my raise with two limpers. I always just stuck to .40 or .50 raises no matter what. But raising higher with those limpers is really going to make them invest to see a flop in a hand they've already invested in.

The "raising rule" is to take your standard opening raise ($0.40) and add a BB for every limper. So, $0.50 for 1 limper, $0.60 for 2, $0.70 for 3, etc. It's not an exact science, but it's a good starting point.

I actually try to not drop below $9 personally. If I get dealt a monster the next hand, I want to try and win as much as possible, and that can only happen if I have at least the maximum allowed on the table.

I totally know how you feel at the moment. I lost 300$ in my last two days (which is pretty much everything I made at 25NL), started off with some bad beats and coolers and then turned into tilt. I then kinda lost my confidence and di'nt want to be aggressive and when I was aggro I was overly aggro in the wrong spots. Then today I was like... OK calm down, I don't wanna move back down to 10NL so just pick good tables and own the fish. I went back to playing my normal game and had a hell of a session to get 150$ back and I hope to keep it going tomorrow.

Basically just don't get demoralized and play how you normally would (or how you did when you were winning) and you'll get back to winning. Most important don't monkey your money off like I did since it will take a lot of work to make up for it.

About those hands you played. I guess in your gut you know it's bad to call, but in the heat of the moment it's hard to fold and making those folds is one of the things us beginners need to learn to do.

3bet AK preflop n get it on that type of flop (in most cases), and your hand 3 is pretty bad btw, not necessarily the calling part, but the bluffing part, he's bet on two streets, he has such good pot odds, unless he was bluffing on flop and turn he won't fold (unless he's a really good player, which he isn"t)... Hand 1 is one of those hands where you know you should fold but it's hard to do so.

Your stats don't look that bad to me, though you should attempt to steal the blinds a bit more from LP, and get your PFR up a little bit (stop limping or calling raises!). You're nicely aggressive, though looking at these hands, I wonder at the spots you pick.

Hand 1: 89s Simple fold Pre-Flop. You're going to be OOP for the rest of the hand with a very mediocre holding. If I HAD to play it because the CO is raising my blinds a lot, then I would actually 3-bet out of the SB. Calling is bad here. The flop lead is good, but I would like to see a little larger bet here than 1/2 pot, every other flush draw is coming with you also. Nice value bet on the turn, but this should be a SUPER easy fold to the push. CO is raising into TWO people here... he WANTS to be called. This would be a much closer decision if it was HU. This is very rarely a bluff, I'd be Very surprised if he showed down less than a K-high flush here.
Hand 2: AKo Re-buy! 3-bet Pre-flop, take charge of the hand if you are going to be OOP for the rest of it. Check raise is good on this flop. Your turn bet looks like you are scared? Are you? I'd bet closer to $2.50 - $2.80 and then SHUT DOWN, you'll only get more action from hands that beat you. Check/call or Check/fold river depending on your read of Villian, and his bet size...
Hand 3: JTs What are you doing here? Pre-flop is bad because of villians stack size. Do you have a plan? Are you seriously chasing a gutshot and a BD flush draw? Flop call is bad, you don't have ANY odds... Turn call is just as bad, especially with villians stack size, if you were going to bluff at any point, the turn would've been the place to do it. River looks exactly like what it is, a bluff. You looked like you were on the Spade flush draw the entire time.

I hope I don't sound too harsh, I just want you to understand that these are pretty good examples of FPS; You had many opportunities in these hands to lose less money, but convinced yourself of the wrong play! Happens to all of us, just learn from it and move on to the next hand of SOLID POKER.

dude I only looked at the 55 hand above but one piece of advice, when you feel like you have the best hand and you want money in the pot, BET BET BET and BET BIG!!!! People LOVE to call. That's what the like to do most so give them something to call. Don't expect other people to do the betting for you. Yeah sometimes they might fold and you feel like you wasted a chance to win a big pot but the increased size of the pots you win when they don't fold more than makes up for these times when they fold.

Well I have figured out some holes in my game that I am working on plugging. I find myself calling too much money on the river just because my curiosity gets the best of me.

Just finished a session down .5 buy in due to getting rivered once on an all in, and then getting runner runnered on 2 all-ins after the flop, including my AA getting cracked. But I feel that I am playing very good poker.

I am currently up $41.

I am very pleased with my play. I've played a little too aggressive at times and I have been on a few heaters at this limit.

My bankroll is currently at $226. I'm looking forward to increasing this and taking a shot at $25NL (although I have a ways to go). At what bankroll would be a good time to increase limits, $500?

Still rolling! The Bankroll has increased to $283. I'm having a spectacular time doing it! I have increased my tables to 6, while sometimes running 8, but I find 8 a tad overwhelming at times, so at 6, I get about 350 hands per hour.

My sessions usually last between 60-90 minutes and when I find myself making poor decisions/calls/folds that I feel that I would not usually make, I either calm myself down or what I will usually do is end my session.

Since moving to .10NL FR I have had 8/9 winning days, with 6 out of the 8 winning days with a winning rate of over 18BB/100. What a great feeling. I plan on increasing my bankroll to $500 before increasing to $25NL.

Stats are looking pretty solid (18/13) and yes, your AF is pretty darn high, you don't call very much (except Pre-flop? Tighten that up just a smidge IMO)

$500 is probably the minimum you should have to be playing at $25NL. It all depends on your tolerance for variance, and how many buyins you would like to set your stoploss at (in case you have to move back to $10NL) Personally I waited until I had 25 buyins ($625), but some people even wait until 30 or even 40! buyins to move up... If you do move up at $500, set yourself a reasonable point to move back down if the bad beats start rolling in (probably at $250 - $300) Oh, and DON'T change your game at all when you move up, the players are just as bad, there's just more money on the table!

My one critique of your posts is that I think you are missing what makes winning poker winning poker.

You post a lot of big pots where you made a "bad call" or some guy sucked out on you. That's not what its all about. Its all about calculating ranges and figuring out your equity based on that.. in a simplified form, if you feel like you will win X% of the time or better vs a guys range, then you should either call, not call, or raise based on that.

There are people on this site that can post about this much much better than me. It was when I read the digests here that my eyes were really opened.. now when I make a play, I know exactly why I am, there is almost no guesswork involved... just play the percentages based on your best read possible and let the cards fall where they may. Sometimes the cards are hot, sometimes they are cold.. but knowing you WILL win over time brings a lot of peace of mind and is very anti-tilt.

So my biggest advice is, don't post the big all in hands... posts the ones where you are unsure of minor nuances here and there in small to medium pots and get advice on those. They are the ones that will make you rise above mediocrity.

My second biggest advice is to work on the preflop play.. watch some of the videos posted by spenda and company.. they are masters of preflop betting vs ranges. Improving your preflop play will make the biggest immediate difference!

I hope this meaningless rambling post helps! lol

I post these hands because I thought that they'd be the most entertaining hands of the session! I feel that I make some very good decisions and also some poor one. I'm learning from my mistakes and I do know that I will win over time and have come to grips with that recently. I also have not tilted in a while, which is good. I've become much more disciplined.

I will look into spenda's preflop plays and I will stop posting my big all in hands and start showing the ones where I have had tough decisions (Although they can be hard to remember after playing for a few hours). And thanks for the constructive criticism.

I have made the jump to $25NL under rolled! I have about $200 to spare with in my checking account to add to my bankroll in case. And I plan to drop back down if I drop 3 buy-ins. So far so good - up a little over 1 buy-in, in a 350 hand session.

You are setting yourself up for failure! Have patience.

If that $200 is part of your bankroll, then it is, don't falter on this. Seperating your bankroll from your personal finances is very necessary at any level. 3 buyin stoploss? why? That doesn't give you much wiggle room, I go on 3 buyin swings nearly every other session.

As far as the hand goes, A flush is a good portion of his range for sure, but it's also blind vs blind.

Flop needs to be closer to post size or more to drive out the odds for the flush draw, and yes the turn bet needs to be larger, so that if he raises, it's a relatively easy fold. As played, a fold isn't terrible here, but I'd be tempted to call, and check/call a smallish bet from this villian on the river.

$200 to play 25nL is suicide man. I have had a few 10+ buy in downswings playing 25NL.

Even the best players in the world would not attempt to play with less than 20 buy ins, and in fact, most people that play for a living have double the buyins in their working bankroll than you would have when just building a roll.

I would read all of the posts on here about BR management. Its more about freedom and comfort than anything. Would you be willing to stack off with an open ender and flush draw knowing its for 1/4 of your br? Are you going to hesitate to stack off preflop to a guy running 70/40 preflop with 1010-QQ? How about what you do when you hit that 10 high flush and the other guy shoves?
So please read all the posts.. 'rilla wrote a great one. Theres another one I recently that drew parallels between playing poker and going camping in the winter time in a place like Alaska. Firelogs are your bankroll. Would you stack only 5 or 6 logs for the entire winter? Or would you pile about 1000 of them to the ceiling to make sure you didn't have even a remote chance of running out? You BR is basically you. With insufficient firewood, you die in a few days; with 4 buyins, it will take less than a few days.

The best advice I can give.. never deposit money again in your life... ever. What's your rush anyways? Poker is a lifetime game...

lol, you guys are right. Although I felt like I played the way I usually do, I was scared doing it. I did not feel comfortable when making bluffs (even though I did and took down 2 pretty big pots this way).

You've talked me into getting back on the grind. I'm up $268, my bankroll is currently at $288 because I gave my buddy $80 to play with and he threw me $80 cash.

Haha, to your post a couple times ago, I am using PT3 right now. I have about 35 days left on my free trial. I'll most likely purchase it after that is over. Definitely worth it when multi-tabling.

I doubt I'll be to $100NL very soon. I start up in my 5th semester of college on Thursday, so poker time will be tough to come by. I'm planning on trying to get about 10-12 hours a week for poker, in between starting Junior classes/homework, ladies , parties, and my campus job with the intramurals and recreation.

I played about an hour today at $10NL and finished up about $6, but I entered a 180 man $4 SnG with a friend and got about 80th losing QQ to AJ. I didn't have many chips though, so I can't blame him.

BR: 270.60 (all profit, I have lent out the remainder of my $100 in exchange for cash to various friends).

Well, after sending my computer in to get it fixed THREE TIMES, it is finally working again. I've been at school for the past week and got in about 1K hands today, finishing up a buy in at $10NL.

My only problem is, IDK if my college's network can handle Pokerstars? I've played 2 sessions, and a few times during each session it would not allow me to finish out a hand. I would click an option and then it would sit there for 30 seconds before sometimes timing out, and sometimes moving ahead very fast.

Luckily it caught up in time when I flopped my nut flush and had a raise and a reraise all in, in front of me and took down a $33 pot. Otherwise I would have been a little upset.

Anyone have any ideas on a remedy for this problem?

Pokerstars is unlikely to be the problem. It is a very small program. It is likely your internet connection at college. I have this same problems sometimes when playing on wifi.

Well that sucks. I guess I'll just have to make my poker playing time for off hours, or play in the library where we have a better connection.

Well tonight I had no problems connection wise (minus me trying out $25NL again because I'm an idiot). Lost about $15 at 25NL in 20 hands? and then won about a buy-in at $10NL in 200 hands.

My goals for this coming month are going to be much lower due to being back at school, having a part time job and the new SOCOM beta coming out on Friday.

I'm going to try to play 12K hands (400 per day) and maintain a 10BB/100 winrate. This would be $100 for the month and put my bankroll back to about $270. I plan to move up to $25NL sometime in November.

Well my connection has been great as of late. I got in about 1400 hands yesterday running at a mediocre 5.5BB/100.

This was actually the bulk of my hands for the month. Over half. I've been slacking, saying I shouldn't play because I need to do homework or something along those lines and then I'll watch television for an hour.

I 8-tabled all day and felt like I easily had enough time to make decisions. Here are a couple hands that I felt like I had to fold.

Something felt fishy about this hand on the flop, which is why I only called.

Some more mediocre play on my part going on in the past few days. I just feel like I don't have it as I did when I was playing well at the end of August.

I have been playing a decent amount of tournaments and doing shitty in them. I placed in a .10 and .25 buy in for a little bit of money. And I played in the $10, $30K guaranteed yesterday afternoon. I was playing great and had double the average chip stack with about 650 people left with the bubble at 540. I had QQ and raised, the player behind me, who had called every1 of my raises called. Flop came K52 and I bet he calls, I bet again he raises minimum - TIME TO FOLD, well I ddin't, I overplayed the QQ and ended up becoming crippled and busting out about 5 hands later just before the money. I learned that I DONT need to win every hand! Lay it down with losing 2/5ths of your chips, it's better than becoming crippled to needing to move all-in afterwards.

The positive part of my tournaments is that I feel like I can win everyone! I've been reading soupie's guide on MTT and it has been helping. I plan to stay out of the $10 buy ins and stick to the $0.10 - $3 buy-in tournaments.

My buddy, who was down about $120 who I had kept lending money to because one, I knew he was good for it, and two, I know how good of a poker player he is, finally got a big win. He had won a $4.40 and 180 man and a $2.20 180 man tourney, but had then played out of his bankroll even though I showed him many times this site. Well he played in the $3.30, 3K guaranteed tourney last night and took it down for $860. I am very proud of him and again I am going to preach to him to make sure he plays in his bankroll.

This month after 3600 hands I am up $42 playing cash (-$15 from $25NL and +$57 at $10NL. My winning rate is at about 6.5BB/100 which is far lower than I would like. I would like to be around 8-10/100 at this level. And then from tournaments I am down about $30, so overall I am up about $12 on the month. Better than losing!

Well this month I have opened up my play from the Button. Running at about 23/19 and 4.55 cold call. I am down about $25 from the Button! Which is the most out of all of my positions.

I'm not exactly sure what to change from this position.

Anyways, I'm up to $322 and I'm up about $110 this month from cash after 7,711 hands. 7.15BB/100. So I'm about on pace for my 12000 hands (a little behind, but I feel like I can bump it up in the last 10 days). I am comfortable 8-tabling now. I bumped it up to 12 and felt overwhelmed, so my buddy said why not drop back down to 8. This gets me just over 400 hands per hour. So to meet my 12K goal, I need to play about 10 more hours (1 hour a day) for the rest of the month. I plan to get in some good playing tonight and tomorrow during the day.

Purely hypothetical, but do you think that you might be carrying your bluffs too far from the Button? How many times have you C-Bet into more than 1 opponenet? 2-barreled, and then folded? Called down lighter? Just looking for areas that you can look to find the problem! And if nothing is there, then just gonna have to chalk it up to variance!

Well this month went okay. I didn't meet any of my requirements besides playing in some cheap MTT (and losing most of them). I've started playing one table of $25NL to try and get accustomed to it. Been about break-even there. Down $35 in the first couple days this month though.



So it was an alright month, kind of evened out at the end, I still can't seem to break that $300 mark for good. I keep staying in between $300 and $330.

I've taken a hiatus from poker playing again. I ended up cashing out $300 on pokerstars. I have turned $50 into $115 on fulltilt thanks in part to a $35 bonus that they offered me about a month ago, but over the past few weeks I haven't been playing at all.

I went to Turning Stone Casino a few weekends ago. Brought $200 with me, and lost a quick $100 with my King high flush to someone pairing the board on the river for their boat.

I then had a great time. I went to get a bite to eat, came back at a different table with $80 and basically took all of the money from the maniac at the table. When I sat down he had about $300. I busted him and I had about $320 when I got up from the table about 2 hours later.

I then played some penny slots to pass the time while my buddy finished up playing. By accident I bet the maximum which was either $2 or $3 and won $48 on that spin.

I will probably start playing again come XMas time due to me being in between semesters. The only problem is that my free trial from pokertracker has now expired, so I may be forking over the cash to use it over xmas break.
